Always weigh more at night than the morning, is this the norm? Husband says it's not

I always weigh around 3/4 pounds more at night than in the morning, I think that's normal but my husband will weigh the same regardless of when he weighs himself. Am I unusual??

And here's an example of a man pontificating about a woman's health, despite his utter lack of knowledge. A bit like much of the modern medical profession, unfortunately.

It's also an example of a woman not just whipping out her phone and shoving Google in his face 🤷‍♂️

Which is what most people would do I think.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 08/09/2024 19:16

My not very scientific tests have shown that going for wee makes more difference to the scales...

olympicsrock · 08/09/2024 19:16

Yup I always weigh myself first thing after doing a wee , taking off every item of clothing.
That’s my true weight! Anything else is just me plus food and fluid

xyz111 · 08/09/2024 19:16

Of course it's normal. You've had a whole day of eating and drinking. He's the one that's weird.

MissEloiseBridgerton · 08/09/2024 19:17

Just weigh yourself once a day at the same time every day, or even once a week would be sufficient then you don't need to worry about the discrepancy.

Snowdrops17 · 08/09/2024 19:17

Of course you weight more at night you have been eating all day I only ever weigh myself first thing in the morning

user47 · 08/09/2024 19:17

I weight up to a stone less in the morning than at night - your husband is utterly wrong.

MayaPinion · 08/09/2024 19:18

You’re also taller in the morning than at night!

Yes, but isn't it exhausting having to prove to them that they are wrong, rather than them refraining from making baseless assumptions in the first place?

KreedKafer · 08/09/2024 19:20

It’s totally normal. Almost everyone will always weigh a little more at night than they do first thing in the morning. That’s why any diet plan, trainer or medical professional will always tell you to weigh yourself at the same time every day to get a more accurate picture.

Honestly, this such common knowledge (and so easy to fact check) that I’m amazed your husband isn’t aware of it.

UserNameOfShame · 08/09/2024 19:21

Yeah normal. I am dieting and make sure I don't even have a drink of water before weigh in first thing!

Fun fact, did you know when you are losing weight around 4/5ths of the fat is turned into carbon dioxide and breathed out through the lungs? The other 5th is turned into water and wee'd/sweated out.
Possibly everyone knows this but it was news to me this week!

unsync · 08/09/2024 19:21

A litre of water weighs one kilo. You dehydrate overnight and lose between 0.5 to 1 litre in fluid. It's not hard to extrapolate that. Add in the contents of your gut, and you can easily see why weight fluctuates through the day. That's without taking hormonal fluid retention into account.

A fluctuation of 1-4lbs is normal. A fluctuation of a stone is not.

If they made a habit of it then yes it would be exhausting.

But completely normal in this house to whip Google out now and then, to prove someone's got something wrong.

upsidelow · 08/09/2024 19:23

Some replies are just rude. Obviously I could've googled this but you know, Mumsnet is a discussion forum.

Also, my husband was in no way trying to be an asshole in saying this to me, it was a lighthearted chat.

I weigh myself a few times a month, sometimes at night and sometimes in the morning. I'm not on a weight loss plan or trying to actively lose weight but I am in training for a run.

I do notice a big jump in weight depending on my cycle though and I'm aware that's common.

WTF??

Up to fourteen pounds less in the morning?

How? Do you sleep walk to the gym and do a cardiovascular work-out in your sleep? 😳😁

upsidelow · 08/09/2024 19:24

Also to add, my husband does weigh the same anytime he weighs himself which is not very often. He has been the same weight for years.

Of course it's normal.

Morning we are dehydrated from sweating and fasting all night.

By the end of the day we are full of food and water!!

I'm usually around 4/5lbs heavier at end of day

What, to the pound? That's very odd if there's not even the slightest fluctuation.

Coincidence then.

If he weighed regularly he'd see few pounds loss/gain.

Choochoo21 · 08/09/2024 19:29

Your weight fluctuates throughout the day.

They say to do in first thing in the morning because you haven’t eaten or drank anything for a few hours, so it will be more accurate.

The scales should be used as a rough guide.

If you are trying to lose weight it may not always decrease every day/week but the trend will decrease over a longer period of time 📉

Hippomumma · 08/09/2024 19:29

2 pounds heavier at night here generally. Gives me an idea of whether I’ll be grumpy or not when I go on the scales in the morning 😂

Ponoka7 · 08/09/2024 19:29

Also depending on your hormone levels you can weigh upto six pounds heavier. Women's bodies are complex.

PuddlesPityParty · 08/09/2024 19:31
Hmm
WheresMySupportCat · 08/09/2024 19:31

In the night you are usually asleep, thus not eating. You might pee once or twice but certainly in the morning before weighing yourself.

EVERYONE weighs less in the monring. And this is why all the weight clubs advice to weigh in after waking and after a pee and before your wakeup coffee.

Its fairly basic tbh.
