holiday or break?

light hearted ....

we messed up with my leave this year, we went away in april earlier this year and have booked for march next year, not realising its within the 1 annual leave year for work. we are going away with friends in march so no chance of changing this.

we've had a pretty hectic year to be honest with health issues, weddings, babies etc and we decided to book a couple of nights away to unwind and relax.

we've booked a lakeside lodge with a hottub a few hours drive from home and the plan is to just relax, read, walk and eat decent food and we know the weather is going to be questionable but we don't care.

but DH is really beginning to annoy me, and yes i know its petty, but it just proves how exhausted i am, and he keeps talking about our up coming 'holiday".. it's not a bloody holiday its a couple of nights away in a self catered lodge!

AIBU - leave him too it you're exhausted and need the break
YANBU - you are right.. its not a holiday!

It's a holiday. If someone only travelled to self catering places in the UK would you say they didn't go on holidays?

YellowphantGrey · 07/09/2024 15:19

How long are you away for?

1 to 2 nights is a break
3 to 4 nights a long weekend
5 plus nights a holiday!

In my head anyway.

CloudywMeatballs · 07/09/2024 15:19

A holiday and a break are exactly the same thing!

2 nights

I think they’re the same thing, sorry OP.

People could equally say “break” for a much longer trip, either in UK or abroad.

But it does sound like perhaps everything has got on top of you!

budgiegirl · 07/09/2024 16:00

I think it can be called a holiday, or a break, either is fine. Nothing to get annoyed about.

Now, when my DH says I've been on holiday, and I've actually been away for a weekend camping with the cubs - THAT's annoying.

What is it when I go away Monday to Friday? 😂

Skyrainlight · 07/09/2024 16:31

I think he's just excited. Try to see his excitement as endearing if you can.

Ponoka7 · 07/09/2024 16:36

I'd call it a break/weekend away, but it's fine to call it a holiday. You getting picky is a big sign that something needs to give. Try to make time for having fun and relaxing.

Lulubellamozarella · 07/09/2024 16:49

Wow, the fact that you are annoyed at him calling it a holiday means you definitely are in much need of a well earned holiday. Oh sorry, I mean break 😆😂

Stompythedinosaur · 07/09/2024 17:30

I think he's right! You are going away from home, staying somewhere else, for leisure purposes. It's a holiday. I don't think the definition of a holiday has a number of nights attached.

ginasevern · 07/09/2024 18:01

Wish my DH was still alive and talking about a holiday or a break, or a mini break or anything.

YellowphantGrey · 07/09/2024 21:34

thursdaymurderclub · 07/09/2024 15:47

2 nights

You're going on a break then!

Midweek break 😂 you're only away 4 nights!

lightsandtunnels · 07/09/2024 21:37

break, holiday, vacation, holibobs lol.
Whatever you want to call it OP you definitely need it!
Sounds fab - hope you have a great time.

TheChosenTwo · 07/09/2024 21:41

I’d just call that a weekend away or if it’s during the week then it’s a short break. I don’t consider it a holiday unless I’ve packed a suitcase and gone on a plane 😂

however I didn’t really understand this whole paragraph and why it’s relevant to your annoyance about the phrasing of your dhs!

what was messed up?

Testina · 07/09/2024 21:43

Imagine someone you know who couldn’t afford more than that, saying, “I’m looking forward to our holiday”. How much of an arsehole would you be to think, “hmmm - not a holiday”. Thats how much YABU.

SkaneTos · 07/09/2024 21:45

"a lakeside lodge with a hottub a few hours drive from home and the plan is to just relax, read, walk and eat decent food" with the love of your life who loves you back. Lucky you!

smashburgers · 07/09/2024 21:46

A holiday is a period of time during which you relax and enjoy yourself away from home.

He is correct.

FourEyesGood · 07/09/2024 21:52

According to Madonna, even “just one day out of life” constitutes a ‘Holiday’, therefore YABU.

You would be an arsehole to think that.

You'd also be an arsehole to think someone would think that about a friend's circumstances and not be thrilled for them.

Sounds like you need better friends if you know people like this!

I don’t know anyone like that, @YellowphantGrey 😀

I was suggesting that OP imagine someone who would decide it wasn’t a holiday… and that would show OP how unreasonable they were! Because exactly your reaction - you’d think they were an arsehole!

DaniMontyRae · 08/09/2024 11:43

It's not really "we messed up my leave" is it? You messed up your leave by not realising you've booked two holidays in the same annual leave year when you wanted them in different years. You can't blame your husband for that.

DonttouchthatLarry · 08/09/2024 11:45

As long as you don't call it a 'staycation' call it whatever you like😀.

We normally holiday in the UK - if you're not at home it's a holiday (staycation is staying at home while off work). Even 3 nights is a holiday to me, just a shorter one than a week or fortnight 😊

it just meant i have no leave left to take so could only have 2 days away rather than pack a suitcase, get on a plane, fly somewhere hot!
