To think this is too early!

At 7 minutes past eight this morning the neighbour directly opposite us cranked up his petrol mower followed by his petrol strimmer then leaf blower. At 8:53 he wheeled out his petrol power washer and began to wash is cars. It was warm here last night so we all have windows open. I'm so pissed off he's ruined my only lie in of the week.

I'm in a quiet cul de sac in NI. I appreciate we generally have had a shot summer and he's making the most of the good weather but holy god! Surely 8am is too early for this caper!

Is there a
Legal limit.

I think it’s a bit early for a Saturday, but also think if he was up and ready to be productive, it’s up to him what he does with his day. Even though it’s frustrating for you, if he is an early riser and wants to get his jobs done and out the way early, he is allowed.
To avoid something like this happening again, make ear plugs part of your sleep routine. My home backs onto the canal and in the spring time I’d get woken in the night by the geese mating, which is quite a grim sound 🤣 so I bought ear plugs to wear at that time of year, but now I can’t sleep without them.
Ny boyfriend often gets woken early by the cat scratching at our bedroom door, people wandering the corridors loudly when we’re in hotels, the window cleaner coming early etc etc, whereas I never hear any of these things thank to my trusty loop earplugs!

And that's all fair enough, but it still doesn't explain why noisy things absolutely need to be done at 8am on a Saturday...

If its going to rain the rest of the weekend and you work mon-fri, & you need to cut the grass. Maybe he's away next weekend and it can't wait. Its really not that bothersome to many people. My neighbour was out powerwashing his drive at 8.30. I greeted him and joked he was welcome to have a go at mine!

It really isn't a necessity to do it at 8am, even if it is going to rain later.

Nothing bad will happen if the grass is a bit longer than normal for a bit Confused

Gingercatlover · 07/09/2024 11:58

Too early! Neighbours should be considerate of others, not before 9 on a weekend really.

PurpleDiva22 · 07/09/2024 11:59

I dunno.... it's definitely annoying for you but any construction workers I know that work Saturdays start work on site at half 8 which I think is fair!

Arrivapercy · 07/09/2024 12:01

That's your opinion. Mine is different. If its left very long in wet weather it gets mossy, takes ages to dry in between rainy spells which limits your ability to use your garden. In our house its important its mown regularly so that the garden is well tended and usable.

DrinkElephants · 07/09/2024 12:01

Gone 8am on a Saturday is fine

Great, so you can get up twenty minutes earlier on a weekday, or do it after work, or plan your weekend around doing it a more sensible time then, surely?

Posts like this make me so glad for our considerate neighbours.

Choochoo21 · 07/09/2024 12:05

I think anything noisy like that before 9am is disrespectful, regardless of the day.

I don’t even hoover before 9am.

I wouldn’t complain but I would just be a bit annoyed and then move on.

Beekeepingmum · 07/09/2024 12:11

8am is fine - it is hardly the middle of the night.

Do you never go out on a Friday or Saturday night?

Of course, but rarely past midnight and I'd wake around 7.30 anyway. Mon -fri i have to be up 6am so my body clock is pretty established to wake up.

It sounds like you're an early bird.

For a lot of night owls, midnight is a period of a lot of activity, particularly on a Friday or Saturday night.

If it's not ok for night owls to keep people awake late at night, it's equally not ok for early birds to wake everyone on the street up just because they're awake.

I'm not suggesting you feel like this, but I have noticed there's a feeling of moral superiority among some early birds that they have the right to wake everyone up.

Soditsally · 07/09/2024 12:19

Op .. just to hopefully make you smile .. I live quite rural , very unusual to hear traffic go past , looking forward to my lie in this morning and was woken at 07.10 by a loud door slam .. looked out to see a big white van with music blaring outside
If I hadn't been naked and looked like shit .. I'd have shouted something rude out the window
He then proceeded to deliver my parcel so I had to shout " thank you " through a tiny gap in the curtains lol and laughed to my grumpy self all the way to the kettle

rainbow1902 · 07/09/2024 12:20

I hate school mornings kids walking past my home from 7.30 -8.30 am.
I don't mind they have school but they don't need to be shouting that loud at that time in the mornings.
I call it my unwanted alarm clock.

Differentstarts · 07/09/2024 12:22

I would personally wait until 9am but I don't think 8am is ridiculous

Couldn't have put it better myself!

Are people really still properly asleep at 9am on a weekend?

Surely most people routinely have to be up earlier than this mon-fri for work and your body does just get used to it. I couldn't sleep past 7.30 if i tried.

I would not even notice your neighbour. We are out of house by 8.30 for tennis.

I am going to impart some information that might be shocking to you. Not everyone is the same!!!

I get up at 6am during the week. Go to bed around midnight, but if work is hectic it will be later. For example this week there was one night I didn’t finish writing a report until 4am and I then had to present it at 9am.

I use the weekends to catch up on sleep - and sometimes stay out late.

i will usually be getting up at 8am on Saturday and 9am on Sunday but I sometimes need more sleep.

because ….. we are all different. We all live very different lives and have different sleep routines.

the pride with which you announced you play tennis at 8:30am is adorable though. Go you 😂😂😂

GoldenLegend · 07/09/2024 12:31

Any time after 8 is fine on a Saturday. I wouldn’t do stuff like that before 11 on a Sunday though

YANBU

This would really piss me off. Any loud noise like that before 10am pisses me off. It's so bloody rude.

I'm a night owl and am most productive once the rest of the household have gone to sleep, that's when I get everything done!!

Even if I was an early bird, no way would I create that much noise at 8am!!

I really detest that some early risers think they are above everyone else, looking down on us night owls.

No, but it's still morning, when many people will still be sleeping. It's rude to use such loud machinery outside, waking people up like that. Would you be ok with them doing it at 10.30pm?

Can you not see the irony in what you just wrote

Bellyblueboy · 07/09/2024 13:02

I never cut the grass before 10am on Saturday and 11am on Sunday.

I have noticed all my neighbours observe this rule - it’s just common courtesy.

in the evenings I won’t cut the grass after 8pm - because I know some younger kids will be in bed.

while it’s technically okay - a lawn mower at 8am is not neighbourly. That’s just common sense.

We wait until gone 10am at the weekend.

Perhaps he is going out for the day and wants to get it done?

Jasmin71 · 07/09/2024 13:06

8am Saturday
10am Sunday

That's how it goes where I live

There is no irony, as my productivity is silent. I do not make any noise whatsoever at night. My work quite literally makes NO NOISE!!
