To think this is too early!

At 7 minutes past eight this morning the neighbour directly opposite us cranked up his petrol mower followed by his petrol strimmer then leaf blower. At 8:53 he wheeled out his petrol power washer and began to wash is cars. It was warm here last night so we all have windows open. I'm so pissed off he's ruined my only lie in of the week.

I'm in a quiet cul de sac in NI. I appreciate we generally have had a shot summer and he's making the most of the good weather but holy god! Surely 8am is too early for this caper!

Is there a
Legal limit.

Of course I would never say anything. I'm far too chicken for that caper. I'd rather sit behind my shutters and seethe. 😊

Equally, loads of people are up at that time and have a day to be getting on with. It's not as if it was 6am!

Spot the noisy neighbour! 😁

sunsetsandboardwalks · 07/09/2024 10:55

I'd say 9am is more appropriate for weekends - YANBU.

What is it that so desperately needs doing at 8am on a Saturday morning, out of curiosity?

Thelnebriati · 07/09/2024 10:33

I'd be in trouble with my landlord for making that much noise before 9am or after 6pm.

Why?

LlynTegid · 07/09/2024 11:04

I cannot imagine said neighbour would have done that on a Sunday in a strongly DUP supporting area.

Reasonable on a Saturday.

Is it forecast to rain later today?

Potaytocrisps · 07/09/2024 11:12

It’s far too early on a weekend. Also in NI, we have a similar neighbour but he doesn’t have dogs!
I hate competitive early bird ‘I get up at 6, 8am is a lie-in nonsense’. I don’t get up at 8am on a Saturday and DC have never got up early in their life ever so keep noisy activities to a more civilised hour!

MumblesParty · 07/09/2024 11:16

Wow too early. 9 is the absolute earliest on weekend days.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 07/09/2024 11:16

Yabu

6am fair enough
8am is fine!

Perhaps he wants to get his stuff done before going out for the day with his kids or whatever

simpledeer · 07/09/2024 11:19

Different councils have different timings on this but I doubt there’s many bans noise before 9 on a Saturday.

Even if it is, the grass doesn't need to be mown or strimmed at 8am. It can wait.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/09/2024 11:22

Far too early.

Arrivapercy · 07/09/2024 11:22

Are people really still properly asleep at 9am on a weekend?

Surely most people routinely have to be up earlier than this mon-fri for work and your body does just get used to it. I couldn't sleep past 7.30 if i tried.

I would not even notice your neighbour. We are out of house by 8.30 for tennis.

Arrivapercy · 07/09/2024 11:25

*what is it that so desperately needs doing at 8am on a Saturday morning, out of curiosity?"

Lots of sport & other children's activities are based around a 9am start on a weekend. If you have a 20 min drive to get to football or tennis or orchestra, you will all be up and eating breakfast by 8am. This is completely normal in many families. It was in mine as child in the 90s, and still is now for my own children and most of my friends. When we left first thing this morning our neighbours were also headed off for football training with their DC.

Of course they are.

Do you never go out on a Friday or Saturday night?

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 07/09/2024 11:29

Round here everyone would just talk about you if you did that. You might find out if the shopkeeper told you!
Where I used to live in the East End people were much more direct and would come round and explain forcefully why they didn't like that behaviour.
And yes clearly too early, but I was brought up by my dad who had very strong views about timing. No phone calls after 9pm from teenage friends. Also like Miss Marple I think phone calls before 9am were also unacceptable.
He himself was a farmer and made a hell of a din all the time during daylight hours, especially in harvest. But never in the garden!

MakeMeATea · 07/09/2024 11:33

8am is legal so it's fine, I'm up by 7am every day so it wouldn't bother me.
Christ being woken at 8 would be a lie in.

Well that’s told all us non morning people 🤭

Cotonsugar · 07/09/2024 11:43

I had to put up with this racket at 8am once a week for 17 years from a neighbour’s “gardener” (more like a man with a mower). Loud petrol mower, leaf blower etc. I was out of bed but somehow it used to get into my head while I was getting myself and kids ready. First week of January he would spend two days cutting the top off an illegally high hedge with electric cutters. After moving I was told by a friend that the new people in my old house were doing a complete refurbishment of the house and garden and a skip had been parked on the front lawn for at least a year! This must have been noisy and annoying with all the trades vehicles and skip. The neighbour refused to lower the hedge. In other words, what goes around comes around 😂

He sounds loathsome and really annoying. I sympathise.

And that's all fair enough, but it still doesn't explain why noisy things absolutely need to be done at 8am on a Saturday...

Arrivapercy · 07/09/2024 11:54

Of course, but rarely past midnight and I'd wake around 7.30 anyway. Mon -fri i have to be up 6am so my body clock is pretty established to wake up.

If its going to rain the rest of the weekend and you work mon-fri, & you need to cut the grass. Maybe he's away next weekend and it can't wait. Its really not that bothersome to many people. My neighbour was out powerwashing his drive at 8.30. I greeted him and joked he was welcome to have a go at mine!
