I have a date would it be unreasonable to go casual?

I have a date this weekend, we've kind of got to know eachother over the last few months as spectators at a sports event. So he's seen me in my everyday wear and is obviously happy with how I present or I'm guessing he wouldn't have asked me out, do you think it's ok to go casual or should I make an effort and dress up a bit? When I say casual I'd wear outdated skinny jeans 😮, a niceish top and a pair of boots or flipflops, weather dependent. Any views or ideas appreciated. I would be most comfortable in what I have suggested.

Well to be precise it would be a Birkenstock thong , but that's still a flip flop. And it's all I've worn all summer, it's everyday footwear and I have several pairs, some I'd wear to the beach, others to work and others out for a drink!

Never seen the words Birkenstock and thong in the same sentence, let alone next to each other.

Well apparently flip flops are just for the beach, so I was trying to give a more precise definition of the style of footwear I would be planning on wearing. I don't live near the beach or work on the beach but I see that particular type of footwear on both men and women daily. Isn't thong the Australian word for flip-flop, maybe Germany use it too!

They don't - der Flipflop or der Badelatschen.

FluffBomb · 07/09/2024 09:41

Jeans, boots with a low heel, nice shirt and a blazer, handbag. Definitely no trainers or flip flops. Flip flops are for the pool, trainers are for the gym. Good luck

And no trainers.'

Why the hell not?

If someone regularly wears trainers and feel comfortable and confident in them I don't see why they should feel the need to change for a man...

'trainers are for the gym.'

I am a Londoner and people wear them anywhere and everywhere.

They won't work if it's pissing down with rain

Jeans, pretty top as opposed to ordinary t-shirt

Flat shoes or boots.

Icanttakethisanymore · 07/09/2024 10:04

I wouldn’t dress up for this, however, I’ve lived in London for years and no one seems to dress up for anything, definitely not a pub.

Trainers are for day to day wear. Going shopping, to the gym etc. I would hope someone going on a date would move it up a notch to something less mundane. A date doesn't have to mean you "dress up" but it should mean you wear something a bit more "special" iyswim. A bit like going to church where you wear your "Sunday best".

liveforsummer · 07/09/2024 10:27

I think when people are suggesting trainers are goood they are meaning this kind of style, which I would happily wear on a date in many circumstances. Although I'd probably describe Birkenstocks as sandals rather than flip flops, sorry I'd still not wear them on a date where as I might wear other sandals if it was warm enough. (unlikely in September given the weather so far this year). That's just my opinion though based on the fact I think Birkenstocks, albeit comfy and functional and I do have some, are a particularly ugly shoe!

I wouldn’t wear Birkenstocks with jeans. They’re a bit mumsy at the best of times

I’m team flip flop - pretty much all I wear in the summer, and definitely not just for the beach! Sadly back in the boots this week since the weather has changed.

What you describe sounds good to me, OP 👍🏻

Babyworriesreal · 07/09/2024 10:40

A bit of effort required - no Birkenstocks. Jeans fine, but lovely top and nice shoes or boots, jewellery, hair done.

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 07/09/2024 10:48

There’s a difference between technical running trainers and lifestyle trainers. I’d wear non-running ones on a date in a country pub.

Think I said originally flip flop or boots weather dependent!

@12yearslater I am a man. Start as you mean to go on, and don't overthink it. Wear what you feel comfortable in, and what you would normally where to wherever you are going. It will be fine.

You're right I'm currently at soft play, besides me in jeans and Birkenstocks nearly every other mum is in gym wear and trainers.

Just thinking of the last time I wore Sunday best to church, that would mean me wearing a frilly dress, long sock and Mary Jane shoes. 😂

I'd say no to birkenstocks or flip-flops, and for the jeans, not ones if you cut the bottom three inches off as was the fashion about three years ago. Nothing wrong with trainers.

Have a lovely time, hope the man you are meeting is one of the good ones.

Bloody spell check. Wear not where 🤣

Shesellsseashellsontheseasure · 07/09/2024 13:03

@12yearslater wear what you want and feel comfortable in. If you want to wear flip flops, you wear flip flops. It's a pub, not a Michelin star restaurant.

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 07/09/2024 13:08

Wear what you’re most comfortable in. If you end up in a relationship with this man, you don’t want to feel like you’ve created a false impression you have to keep up!

SunblockSue · 07/09/2024 13:09

I'm definitely in the no flip flops (ever) and yes to trainers camp. Also 'nice boots' says frumpy to me and makes my toes curl. But just wear what you want!

We're all so different! Not sure what category my doc martens would come under? 3 pairs to choose from Sinclair and Jadon in black or original in cherry.

Oh and I've seen him in flip flops so I'm sure he wouldn't be to adverse, weather dependent of course.

Going to a nice villagey kind of pub for drinks in the evening.

I guess I'm making an issue out of it for a number of reasons, I've been single a long time and not been on a date in yonks so am a bit out of touch of expectations and don't want to get it totally wrong, also I'm worried if he makes an effort and I'm then underdressed, although having got to know him I think he's really quite laid back and whilst I don't think he'll rock up in shorts I can only imagine he'll wear jeans.

If you think he'll be in jeans, why are you overthinking that it might be unreasonable for you to go in the same? Do you think that women have to dress up a step more than men?
