To go to A&E with a baby tooth infection?

ByeByeBabyTooth · 06/09/2024 22:43

DD8 woke up crying with tooth pain yesterday, Neurofen and Calpol weren’t helping so went to the dentist this morning. Teeth good before now, first filling only a few weeks ago.

Dentist ended up extracting the tooth and prescribed amoxicillin as there was an infection, hugely traumatic, DD yelling, shaking, cried for ages.

Tonight DD has a fever and has thrown up but the pain has improved and her form is better. Dentist is saying that it’s unusual and to go to an out of hours GP / A&E if we are worried. DH thinks that this is an overreaction and we should wait for the antibiotics to kick in. I made the mistake of googling and all of the links are about sepsis so slightly freaking out.

Has anyone come across this before or have any advice?

Unless your DH is a medical professional, ignore him. You’ve had medical advice from the dentist. Take it and take your child for medical care, even if they “only” check her over.

ComeTheFckOnBridget · 06/09/2024 22:45

You're worried and the dentist told you to go to A&E if you were worried, so that is what I would do.

Poor girl, I hope she starts feeling better soon.

Take supplies for A&E

CynthiaRothrock · 06/09/2024 22:46

If she is in agony and you are worried then go! Dentist may have left a small fragment of tooth in the gum. You know your child. If this is unusual of her then listen! If she is a a drama lama then wait until the meds kick in. Only you know what's best for her!

ncforcatquestion · 06/09/2024 22:46

Yes I think it is unusual to have a fever from this, please go

Listen to me the medically qualified person who is giving you advice.

GreatMistakes · 06/09/2024 22:46

I'd trust a medical professional over dh.

Look at it this way, if the dentist is wrong and A&E isn't needed, you just get sent home feeling reassured.

If DH is wrong, what is the worst case scenario?

RedHelenB · 06/09/2024 22:46

I'd agree with dh and wait and see.

ncforcatquestion · 06/09/2024 22:48

Although it has happened to me when I was a teenager. It was one of the sickest times of my life, I was drifting in and out the days with it

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/09/2024 22:50

Your DH is a twat. A&E.

OKt · 06/09/2024 22:50

Absolutely take your daughter to A&E.

SendMeHomeNow · 06/09/2024 22:53

If you don’t go to A&E (I would) please at least ring 111.

The dentist has told you to go, so definitely listen to your unqualified DH while your child is sick and in pain.

Did you know there are some medical conditions that leave people with really poor enamel? Makes their teeth very vulnerable. I don’t know why you’re so keen to suggest this is shitty parenting.

That's really nothing. When I was that age I had a mouth full of fillings

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 06/09/2024 23:00

High fever that isn't going down and linked to infection? Just go and get it checked out to be on the safe side. Take everything you need to be comfortable in case it's a long wait xx

ByeByeBabyTooth · 06/09/2024 23:03

Thanks all, waiting to be seen by emergency GP now - temp has come down with neurofen but better to get checked

A fever with a known infection that isn’t improving with antibiotics and pain relief is a red flag for sepsis. Please take her to hospital op. Dental pain and infection is notorious. Listen to your instinct on this x

Taluulaah · 06/09/2024 23:12

Glad you’re seeing emergency doctor OP. I have a background in dentistry and would absolutely recommend you get your little one checked over with the symptoms you describe. Hopefully it will be a very swift and smooth recovery, but it’s always worth being on the safe side, with a child particularly.
Hope she’s feeling better soon 🙏🏼❤️‍🩹

Indeed both my kids have Ameleogenesis imperfecta

ByeByeBabyTooth · 06/09/2024 23:20

Doc thinks it’s a virus and unrelated to the tooth infection which seems very co-incidental. He said it wasn’t sepsis as the temp came down a little with neurofen and said to wait for another day or two until the antibiotics kick in.

OP posts:
Wavescrashingonthebeach · 06/09/2024 23:23

It makes sense your child will be more susceptible to a virus when already fighting off tooth infection. Glad you've had it all seen though - get well soon to your child.

Thanks @Wavescrashingonthebeach, my head is worrying about missing early sepsis but DD is chatting away and the temp is just under 38 now with meds so will just trust the doc

Most areas have out of hours centres where you see the emergency GP.
