To go to A&E with a baby tooth infection?

DD8 woke up crying with tooth pain yesterday, Neurofen and Calpol weren’t helping so went to the dentist this morning. Teeth good before now, first filling only a few weeks ago.

Dentist ended up extracting the tooth and prescribed amoxicillin as there was an infection, hugely traumatic, DD yelling, shaking, cried for ages.

Tonight DD has a fever and has thrown up but the pain has improved and her form is better. Dentist is saying that it’s unusual and to go to an out of hours GP / A&E if we are worried. DH thinks that this is an overreaction and we should wait for the antibiotics to kick in. I made the mistake of googling and all of the links are about sepsis so slightly freaking out.

Has anyone come across this before or have any advice?

@DuffMckagen Went to a walk-in out of hours GP clinic, they’re open here until midnight. Have never heard of an emergency GP doing home visits but I guess they must in certain cases.

Trust me, it’s far more of a shame and says an awful lot about you that you’re trying to make a concerned mum feel like rubbish. Did getting the boot in to OP at least make you feel better?

Some people have naturally soft enamel prone to decay, others have had their milk teeth weakened by antibiotics as a baby or young child. Think before you judge.

Most dentists won’t extract if there’s an infection as the anaesthesia often doesn’t work. I’m surprised a dentist extracted the tooth when an infection was present without taking X-rays to check.

I see you’ve already been to a walk in GP. Perhaps I’m missing the point of the thread but if you’ve been to a dentist and a GP I’m not sure what the issue is?

The dentist told her to go to the walk in centre or A&E

So she went to out of hours to see the doctor

Sometimes doctors get it wrong to so she’s worried
Hospital doctors especially tend to go with the ‘gut’ feeling of mum

OP - If you are still concerned - She gets worse, just take her to A&E

That is so strange, my daughter had a tooth removed in Feb and started vomiting the very same day. I thought it was from swallowing blood from the extraction, took her to the dentist who said everything looked fine. Ended up in A&E through dehydration as the vomiting lasted a good few days, they put it down to a virus and she was just unlucky with timing, had some iv fluids and felt much better

It'd absolutely fine to extract a tooth with an infection in it, normally you need quite a large amount of pus for the anaesthetic not to work

That's really nothing. When I was that age I had a mouth full of fillings

Same!!

Were you born in the early 80’s by any chance?

I swear that dentist got a bonus for how many kids teeth he filled!!

Early 90s. I do suspect I might have had unnecessary work done, but my parents also weren't exactly very attentive to getting me to brush, and my diet was mostly grains, so there is that

FiveTreeHill · 07/09/2024 00:38

Does she have any facial swelling?

She's had the tooth out and she's on oral antibiotics. If no facial swelling then it's unlikely to be related to a dental infection. She had pain for 1 day so again unlikely to have developed any sort of significant infection from the tooth

So I would basically manage as you would a normal fever. She seems well, her temperatures come down.

When the thread was started, she hadn't been to the GP. Hence asking advice/reassurance.

Just to update in case this helps anyone else … was at the walk in / emergency doc a couple of times as neurofen / calpol stopped lowering her temp.

Firstly, everyone we saw were concerned and said that she 100% should have been seen as it’s not usual to have a high temp and nausea after an extraction, even with an abscess.

Secondly, @FiveTreeHilland others had it right and the lack of facial swelling was key - looks like she had a secondary virus or infection as @Wavescrashingonthebeach suggested.

On the mend now so thanks all for the handhold and comments as it was very worrying for a while.
