I’ve not been back for around 18 years…lived there from birth until 23, when I then travelled lots and lived abroad. The last time I went back was before my family moved house to another area of the U.K.
I had my whole childhood, amazing teenage years and early 20’s there. I’d always wanted to travel and live abroad and thought I’d be back one day…I never returned to live. My immediate family don’t live there now or I suppose I would have been more likely to have gone back. I still have a few good friends there, but many are scattered everywhere. I’ve been dreaming about it lots recently and my old house and my old life as it were. I’m mid 40’s, is this normal?
Did you ever move away for a long time, then move back?

Christ, no.

I grew up in a village near a town, I need to be in/near a city.

So horses for courses.

I get the pull of nostalgia after you hit 40 tho! And if I’d grown up somewhere similar to where I live I might feel likewise. I think you need to either go for it or remind yourself grass is greener…

Ethylred · 06/09/2024 20:06

No. It was small and boring.

PoliteOtter · 06/09/2024 20:08

I go back to my hometown a lot because my parents still live there. I went through a phase of wanting to move back there when my kids were young and sort of hankering after it and I think it was nostalgia. I don’t think I actually do want to live there though. When I am there too long I feel the same sense of mild suffocation that made me want to move away but when away from it and just visiting I can objectively really appreciate it.

God no. I don't even like visiting my home town.

This - but it’s a popular place on MN that’s often suggested when people are after a “nice market town with independent shops and amenities” 😂

QueefofSheena · 06/09/2024 20:09

I live in my home town after years of living all over the place. DH had a house here when we met and it was more suitable for DC than my old house. It’s changed a lot and prices are ridiculous now. It’s one of the places that is always mentioned when people are looking to move out of London.

TheDandyLion · 06/09/2024 20:10

I would have loved to have stayed there but I got priced out years ago.

KitsyWitsy · 06/09/2024 20:15

I'm from Bradford. So. No.

spaceshooter · 06/09/2024 20:28

Christ no. Never. Bad memories and the same people from my year at school are still there in each pockets and have not moved on one iota and it's weird.

Flibflobflibflob · 06/09/2024 20:29

No, it’s a dump tbh.

HannahinHampshire · 06/09/2024 20:33

Yes, and I will. Originally from Scotland and moved to Hants 30+ years ago, both kids now in north England. Been perfectly happy in Hampshire but now at 64 just want to go ‘home’.

LeanIntoChaos · 06/09/2024 20:33

I still live in my home town and I absolutely love it. Although objectively it is not considered a lovely place to live.

My husband and I met at school and both families are really close. And we like each other, so that's ok.

I feel like I know all the good bits. Plus it's by the sea, and I think having grown up by the sea, I couldn't ever live somewhere that wasn't on the coast.

HowardTJMoon · 06/09/2024 20:50

Not so much my home town but I when I think about retirement I do tend to find myself thinking about going back to my home county of Kent. I'm not sure why, it just feels comfortable and familiar.

KitsyWitsy · 06/09/2024 20:15

I'm from Bradford. So. No.

Ha, so am I originally! Moved out of Low Moor when I was 5.

JohnCravensNewsround · 06/09/2024 20:59

I did.
Moved back when I was 30ish. Raised eldest kids there, moved away again knocking on 50.

Thursa · 06/09/2024 21:00

I come from a small costal Scottish town. Haven’t been home in about 12 years. Some times I desperately want to go back, so badly I can smell the crops, the sea, peat smoke… But I did you back to live there and lasted 2 years before I was ready to leave again. Maybe as I get older it’s a want for a quieter life?

SanFranBear · 06/09/2024 21:03

God no... nobody and nothing there, plus it seems to have lost all its character due to over development.

Much happier where I live now and if I was to move (and I really would like to), it wouldn't be back to my home town - no fucking chance.

coxesorangepippin · 06/09/2024 21:06

Absolutely no chance

Crunchingleaf · 06/09/2024 21:07

I went back home. Left at 17 for university and absolutely couldn’t wait to get away. I was gone for over 15 years but no where else felt like home. Thought I would never return. I am loving being home and honestly quality of life is pretty good here for us.

Londonrach1 · 06/09/2024 21:07

No. Too many bad memories. It's a lovely town. Just not for me.

MaggieBsBoat · 06/09/2024 21:08

Reading. Nope. Nothing but bad memories and rude people. Pretty much everywhere I’ve lived since then has been better (and I’ve lived in some lousy places)

Kitkat1523 · 06/09/2024 21:08

I visit every month when I go stay with my Mum….lots has changed …..lots hasn’t…. But I’ve not lived there for 40 odd years now so it’s no longer ‘home’ …..but I like the familiarity of it ….. it a warm, safe feeling

Marine30 · 06/09/2024 21:09

No, because I hated the small town/not much going on feel. However, I still stay in touch with a couple of school mates and it just feels like they know you so well and you have loads in common.
Don’t miss the place, sometimes miss the people. Yanbu

TheKneesOfTheBees · 06/09/2024 21:10

Yes. I lived in London for 14 years, then two other cities then returned to my home town. I love it, it's often mentioned in the top places to live, so there's lots going on, but mostly I like the sense of being grounded that it gives me, and meeting people with shared history and connections, and that I know a lot about the place and it's history that I can tell other people who are newer. I don't have any family here though anymore other than DD, and my friends are mostly people who have moved here from elsewhere.

BoobyDazzler · 06/09/2024 21:11

North Oxfordshire. Not if you paid me,

DramaAlpaca · 06/09/2024 21:12

Nope. Funnily enough, I'm in my home area at the moment and was wondering about visiting my home town tomorrow. I think I've decided not to, I'll leave the memories there this time.
