I think it's a local news story about a competition being held locally.

FuckThePoPo · 06/09/2024 12:01

What's wrong with it?

ComtesseDeSpair · 06/09/2024 12:02

I think the article beginning with “A woman” rather than something like “local Leicester woman, Emily Marshall… etc” or “Leicester student, Emily Marshall… etc” is just poor and clumsy writing rather than complaint-worthy sexism tbh.

KimberleyClark · 06/09/2024 12:03

I see nothing wrong with it. She’s someone who does speed cubing who happens to be a woman. That’s it.

Benvolio · 06/09/2024 12:03

I'm feeling quite angry about sexism generally today, but I don't find anything in that article objectionable.

araiwa · 06/09/2024 12:05

What is your complaint?

MarmitePizza · 06/09/2024 12:06

It’s just the weird way they write newspaper headlines. She must definitely not have children, other wise they would be saying “A mother…” It does sound stupid if you think about it, but I don’t think it’s sexist really.

x2boys · 06/09/2024 12:10

I can't see a problem?
But this article is more 80,s rather than 50,s when Rubik,s cubes were hugely popular.

Benvolio · 06/09/2024 12:17

This is the next article on the page:

'Man being sentenced for 'most serious' case related to Rotherham hotel riot'.

It is sexist and reductive when a woman is described as a 'mother', 'daughter' or 'wife' in a story that isn't about those relationships.

Men are also described as fathers or grandfathers in stories that aren’t about those relationships, especially if they have been a victim of, or committed, a crime.

Plippleton · 06/09/2024 12:25

I complained that as it's written, it's sexist & has no news value, to me it reads that the news point is that a woman has been able to do this.

Agreed, if reworded 'a local woman has done this..' but there is no achievement here, many women and girls can do this.

But how it is now it's the same as "a woman has driven a car today in Oxford".

Sorry I don’t at all see this as sexist…

AuntieJoyce · 06/09/2024 12:30

Perhaps you need a poll of Mumsnetters who can do the Rubik’s cube in seven seconds. I bloody can’t

I can’t do a Rubik cube at all, never mind in 7 seconds 🤣

I can do two sides <preens>

Probably in seven minutes

deltabluesandpinks · 06/09/2024 12:33

It's not sexist, it's factual. You could replace "woman" with man, child, teenager. All absolutely fine.

You're overthinking this.

carrotcard · 06/09/2024 12:36

I'm just impressed they haven't called her a "person with ovaries".

Yeah seems pointless unless perhaps women are underrepresented in the cubing community and this is a big deal

LampHat · 06/09/2024 12:36

It is a strange article 😂 if you replaced “woman” with “man” you can see how oddly it reads.

The word “local” or something would have made all the difference.

deltabluesandpinks · 06/09/2024 12:37

ShamblesRock · 06/09/2024 12:33

Looking at the world rankings it does seem a male dominated event, not sure where this is though.

https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/results/rankings/333/single

This too. It does seem to be a male dominated activity so maybe using "woman" is highlighting that she is even more impressive because she's broken through that?

I think most of us on this thread could drive our cars in Oxford. I, at least, could not solve a Rubik’s cube in 7 seconds.

Solve a rubicks cube in 7seconds? I feel terribly inadequate now😔

KimberleyClark · 06/09/2024 13:41

I bought a book on how to do it but couldn’t make any sense of it.

x2boys · 06/09/2024 13:53

From what I recall from my 80,s childhood some people just have a knack with Rubiks cube ,I think I saw someone do it with their feet once on some kids show!
