No sorry, don't see this as objectionable in any way. Trivial, maybe. Objectionable, no.

Rory17384949 · 06/09/2024 13:58

I don't see anything wrong with it sorry OP, perhaps they could have started with "Leicestershire woman ..." but I didn't read it like they were saying "wow a woman can solve a Rubik cube"

Men are also described as fathers or grandfathers in stories that aren’t about those relationships, especially if they have been a victim of, or committed, a crime.

True. Especially if they are older than about 60.

I complained that as it's written, it's sexist & has no news value, to me it reads that the news point is that a woman has been able to do this.

Agreed, if reworded 'a local woman has done this..' but there is no achievement here, many women and girls can do this.

But how it is now it's the same as "a woman has driven a car today in Oxford".

What do you mean "there is now achievement here" ?

Can you solve a rubix cube in 7 seconds?!

I think you've got your wires a bit crossed to be honest...

TheShellBeach · 06/09/2024 14:12

I used to be able to do one side.

Sorry typing on phone: I meant there is no achievement here, nothing special. My DD can do it in 15s and goes to these types of meets with lots of other kids of both sexes.

It's news if she won, it's news if she broke a record. It's not news if she's doing the same as lots of other people.

I can’t do a Rubik cube at all, never mind in 7 seconds 🤣

Same here!

Plippleton · 06/09/2024 14:23

I just checked the results from a recent competition DD was at and a girl who is under 14 got a time of 7.8 secs. There is no article about her on the BBC and this is not exceptional.

I suspect that a relative, friend, teacher etc has written to the local BBC partnership for the publicity and the story has been picked up that way. It’s local news and they like to run things which might seem to be non-stories if you aren’t local, if it’s something nice or heartwarming. It’s safe to say that BBC journalists aren’t specifically roaming around Rubik’s cube solving events looking for stories to run: perhaps you could try to obtain similar exposure for your DD and her friend if they’d like to be in local news?

biscuitandcake · 06/09/2024 14:37

There is also an article on the BBC website about a cat that the owners thought had died and been cremated only for it to saunter back in. Neither of them are earthshattering major news stories. They are nice stories, about nice things. It's a big achievement and it's a break from the doom and gloom.

The woman is able to do something not many people can do. Good for her. If your dd also does rubric cubes completions then she is also clearly much better at it than the general population. Good for her.

No they wouldn't want to be in the news , nor do they know each other. You miss the point.

These sorts of human interest stories are what makes regional news worth reading. I get that you're not particularly impressed by this woman's skills, but I imagine a lot of people would be.

So what if they call a woman a woman? It would be very weird to write an article about someone and not refer to their sex.

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 06/09/2024 15:08

Do you go to elevenerife for your holidays?

The article was celebrating her achievement. You've just started a thread saying its nothing special, your daughter can do it too. You just sound a bit jealous

CanYouHearThatNoise · 06/09/2024 15:10

KimberleyClark · 06/09/2024 12:03

I see nothing wrong with it. She’s someone who does speed cubing who happens to be a woman. That’s it.

Some people, like OP, look for any trivial thing to be offended about

sophiasnail · 07/09/2024 19:07

You are right OP. All mention of women in newspapers should be banned.
