to ban DD from eating chicken

I know this might sound extreme, but hear me out. My DD has been having some digestive issues lately. She's been complaining of stomach aches and feeling bloated after meals. After doing some research, I discovered that chicken can be a common trigger for digestive issues in some people.

I decided to do an experiment and cut chicken out of her diet for a week. Lo and behold, her stomach aches disappeared and she felt much better overall. I was thrilled that I had found a simple solution to her discomfort.

But now, DD is begging me to let her have chicken again. She misses her favorite meals and feels left out when her friends are eating chicken nuggets at school. I understand where she's coming from, but I can't ignore the fact that her health has improved since cutting out chicken.

I've tried to explain to her the reasons behind my decision, but she just doesn't seem to understand. She thinks I'm being unfair and depriving her of something she enjoys. I feel torn between wanting to make her happy and wanting to keep her healthy.

So, am I being unreasonable to ban my DD from eating chicken? I just want what's best for her, but I can't help feeling guilty for denying her something she loves. Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You can't prove it was the chicken unless she tries it again and the symptoms return.

I would have thought there were far more likely causes than chicken anyway. Chicken really isn't a common cause of stomach ache/bloating.

How old is your daughter?

GhibliCat · 06/09/2024 09:57

How old is she? Could you try the quorn chicken nuggets?

Littlemisscapable · 06/09/2024 09:57

What ? Please take her to the GP and get a proper diagnosis.

LolaJ87 · 06/09/2024 09:57

If she has been having these issues have you brought her to see a GP? There could be something else going on here. How old is she?

GhibliCat · 06/09/2024 09:57

I agree in giving them again to see if the symptoms return.

When she starts complaining explain it's the chicken.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 06/09/2024 09:58

I wonder if eating chicken at lunchtime rather than the evening would make a difference? Also, if it's breaded as opposed to plain or in eg tomato sauce? It could as easily be the coating/ preservatives/gluten in the breadcrumbs. Might be worth experimenting further? Finally, some people who are intolerant to chicken are fine with turkey.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 06/09/2024 09:58

I would reintroduce it too to see if symptoms return.

Edingril · 06/09/2024 09:59

You are not a doctor get her tested

Mangolover123 · 06/09/2024 09:59

Are you sure it is chicken and not gluten?

FatmanandKnobbin · 06/09/2024 10:00

Get her an intolerance test.

I would also try her on chicken again for a week and see what happens.

This! You don’t know if it’s actually chicken and without a sensible approach you could give her unhealthy ideas about food. Googling is fine to get an idea but it’s not a diagnostic tool!

Penguinmouse · 06/09/2024 10:00

Reintroduce, see what happens but also book a GP appointment so she can be properly tested. As people said, it might be gluten in the breadcrumbs, or sauce. You need a doctor to confirm what the problem is and then can make a decision.

Tiswa · 06/09/2024 10:01

I would get medical advice - as it is chicken nuggets you don’t know it is chicken and not something else

properly done food diary etc will help as well

Lostinbrum · 06/09/2024 10:01

You really need to carry out an elimination diet under the guidance of a doctor or nutritionist. You can't just cut something like chicken out of a child's diet. Let her have the chicken nuggets and please see a doctor

Spenditlikebeckham · 06/09/2024 10:01

Secondary school? Leave her to it but no days off if she is poorly...

PashaMinaMio · 06/09/2024 10:02

Chicken nuggets!
Have you read the ingredients on the packet?
Maybe it’s something in the ingredients which is the cause? Dairy or wheat? Chickens are fed on grain (wheat).
If there’s anything they’re made from, the name of which you don’t recognise, it could be that.
You could try making your own with wholesome ingredients and see if that helps?

theeyeofdoe · 06/09/2024 10:03

Chicken is not a common cause of stomach upsets. Processed breaded chicken could be.

just make some from scratch and see

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 06/09/2024 10:05

Plain chicken or chicken that's been processed, which is a very different issue given the nasty additives, fillers and coatings. Was it plain chicken? I react very badly to coated products, try to avoid upf's as a rule, but am also salicylate intolerant, which means a build up of substance rather than the substance itself.

PenelopePitStrop · 06/09/2024 10:05

My friend’s Dc was allergic to chicken (diagnosed by allergy department at hospital) but could eat turkey

bakewellbride · 06/09/2024 10:08

Green cuisine freezer range is amazing. Their 'chicken' dippers are so good and so much like real chicken. In sainsburys. No need for your dd to miss out.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 06/09/2024 10:08

@GreatMintPeer this is what we do in hosp. process of elimination to find out what is the irritant! she needs to listen to you. If she starts eating it again and her problems return then it might make her realise that she shouldnt be eating it x

Definitely don't eat these if she has digestive issues, they're so ultra processed. no wonder people get digestive issues

No such thing as an intolerance test. All you can do is remove the suspected cause from your diet and see if things improve.

Tradersinsnow · 06/09/2024 10:11

I think it's a good idea to run another test and see if she reacts. Chicken nuggets are full of so much crap that I think you should separate out the chicken and the breading and run separate tests at least a week apart.

There's no such thing as intolerance testing--you figure it out by withdrawing the food and then reintroducing it.

Catza · 06/09/2024 10:12

Did you stop her from eating chicken or did you stop her from eating reconstituted chicken products (like nuggets) because there is a huge difference between the two.
At the moment, I don't think your experiment is very conclusive. I would either see a DR if the symptoms are significant or reintroduce fresh chicken at the very least to see if it causes similar symptoms to nuggets.
