to ban DD from eating chicken

I know this might sound extreme, but hear me out. My DD has been having some digestive issues lately. She's been complaining of stomach aches and feeling bloated after meals. After doing some research, I discovered that chicken can be a common trigger for digestive issues in some people.

I decided to do an experiment and cut chicken out of her diet for a week. Lo and behold, her stomach aches disappeared and she felt much better overall. I was thrilled that I had found a simple solution to her discomfort.

But now, DD is begging me to let her have chicken again. She misses her favorite meals and feels left out when her friends are eating chicken nuggets at school. I understand where she's coming from, but I can't ignore the fact that her health has improved since cutting out chicken.

I've tried to explain to her the reasons behind my decision, but she just doesn't seem to understand. She thinks I'm being unfair and depriving her of something she enjoys. I feel torn between wanting to make her happy and wanting to keep her healthy.

So, am I being unreasonable to ban my DD from eating chicken? I just want what's best for her, but I can't help feeling guilty for denying her something she loves. Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You really need to carry out an elimination diet under the guidance of a doctor or nutritionist. You can't just cut something like chicken out of a child's diet. Let her have the chicken nuggets and please see a doctor

Don't be so silly, nobody ever came to harm from "not eating chicken" (assuming they have access to other food sources obviously). None of my DC have ever eaten a morsel of chicken and they're thriving. In fact, I haven't eaten it myself since I was about 4...

However the OP has a distinct whiff of AI about it, so I CBA responding to the actual question.

You can't prove it was the chicken unless she tries it again and the symptoms return.

I would have thought there were far more likely causes than chicken anyway. Chicken really isn't a common cause of stomach ache/bloating.

How old is your daughter?

Edited

It absolutely is! I cannot digest it and never have been able to. At all! Since babyhood. I'm now 40 and still end up bent over in agony if I eat any chicken.

Chicken is not a common cause of stomach upsets. Processed breaded chicken could be.

just make some from scratch and see

Nonsense! See my above comment

Might it be the chicken nugget coating rather than chicken itself? I think if your DD is prepared to put up with tummy ache and the bloating it’s up to her.

FlappingMadly · 08/09/2024 00:28

Have her checked. More likely intolerance to
sth else like wheat. And since when have we called nuggets chicken?

pollymere · 08/09/2024 00:55

Mine can't really eat chocolate and has odd allergies. However they have often ignored their allergies and then felt bad 🤦‍♀️. Regrettably your DD needs to realise that chicken makes her ill and to not eat chicken for herself. Yes of course discourage it by all means. And don't rule out other foods. Symptoms can take seven days to appear. It was only when mine had eaten anything and ate their allergen... Followed by the hospital giving medication containing the allergen 🤦‍♀️ that we realised what was actually causing it.

I think you're being unfair and dangerous with regards to your daughter's health by playing Internet Doctor. She needs to be seen by a Paediatrician and Dietician. She could have Celiacs, or it could be processed food making her bloated (chicken nuggets). It could be something in the chicken which can be found in other foods, too.

FloozyMcGee · 08/09/2024 07:44

Stomach ache and bloating are not poor health, they are discomfort, and it's she that is experiencing it. Either let her eat what she wants (but if you don't want to support it at home, that's your choice) but tell her no complaining when her stomach hurts, or go to the doctor and make sure nothing`s going on and then leave her to her own devices.

FlappingMadly · 08/09/2024 07:55

Sorry but no, don’t leave her to own devices. She’s a child. Take her to the doctor and have her checked for intolerances. If she has something like celiac it is serious and needs to be addressed. Even just an intolerance of something else needs to be understood. If a child is routinely sick they’re losing nutrients and lower in energy, which impacts performance at school.

Theunamedcat · 08/09/2024 08:35

I don't think they are coming back

Dobest · 08/09/2024 08:45

I think you found a red herring and chicken is unrelated to her illness.

Also to add lots of dogs have chicken allergies too!

Yes, mine does. Was put on insect protein based food for a while but that was expensive and she wasn't keen. Now she has food based on white fish protein.

Skybluepinky · 08/09/2024 09:19

Take her to a professional.
