So today I washed the cover of the dogs bed and hung it on the line before school run. I came home from school and the bed was still in the machine! I know I hung it out because Nextdoor have got a new robotic lawnmower and I remember seeing it in their lawn. No one else is home.

Was telling husband tonight because we joke my peri menopause is rotting my brain. He said of that's like a glitch in the Matrix! wtf. I've never heard that before.

Have you heard or experienced this? I prefer to think I'm loosing the plot I think!

It comes from the film The Matrix and yes I've heard of it there's lots of examples if you search the phrase

romdowa · 06/09/2024 09:27

I've seen it mentioned online before. I've never experienced it though

Imperfectionist · 06/09/2024 09:27

Time to rewatch the Matrix OP and it will
all make sense.

The film is still brilliant, even more so when you think of the 90s special effects (including the ‘glitch’ scene)

Caerulea · 06/09/2024 09:28

Sounds like you need to watch the films :)

Tbf it's just referring to dejavu though

OhLookAStrawberry · 06/09/2024 09:28

Very common term, especially on social media

Cosycore · 06/09/2024 09:29

It’s Deja vu.

the “glitch in the Matrix” is what they call Deja vu (in the film it’s when someone has changed something in the computer system, so it occurs again when the change is made). Just a wee pop culture name for the same thing

GlowWurm · 06/09/2024 09:30

The Matrix is an iconic movie, whether you liked it or not it’s part of a wider cultural lexicon that most people would understand the references to.

Startingagainandagain · 06/09/2024 09:31

Reference to the Matrix films (featuring Keanu Reeves)

They are are definitely worth watching, especially the first one :).

booisbooming · 06/09/2024 09:33

There’s a whole Reddit board about these! A lot of stoned teens convinced that the fabric of reality is collapsing because they forgot where they put their cup of coffee down.

BabaYetu · 06/09/2024 09:33

Haven’t you seen The Matrix? Red pill, blue pill, there is no spoon, all that stuff?

It’s worth it for the swishy black coats alone.

BeachRide · 06/09/2024 09:35

It happens a lot with identical Amazon vans here!

VapeVamp12 · 06/09/2024 09:35

There was a "glitch in the matrix" caught on CCTV which I saw recently. A caterer was cutting lemons - halved them all, walked to get a bowl and one lemon needed cutting again, even though she had just cut it!

Rigatone · 06/09/2024 09:41

I had one last night! I turned on my daughter's fairy lights in her bedroom before reading her a story and then she asked for her fairy lights putting on.. they were off!

Although that's not a deja vu, if that's the proper meaning of glitch in the matrix.

fizzymizzy · 06/09/2024 09:43

Dejavu is not the same as a glitch in the matrix. In fact, it's the opposite. Dejavu would mean OP hanging the washing out whilst feeling she had 'been there before' - matrix glitches are when you go to do something and it's done, or you do it and it's 'undone' like OP experienced

Skyrainlight · 06/09/2024 09:45

I've heard of it and I do believe it happens.

Bluebellsinthewind · 06/09/2024 09:51

Glitch in the matrix was a study done by scientists years ago, then they based a film on it.

First time in my mumsnet history, that I've been able to drop in a fact before anyone else. Please let me have this moment Grin

confusedabouthormones · 06/09/2024 10:04

@Bluebellsinthewind I'm stunned by your knowledge. Thank you for your contribution (too much?) Grin

Ahh. I've never seen the Matrix movies. That's the plan for the weekend then. To catch up. I've just done a quick search and loads come
Up. I fear my ironing will be a glitch in the Matrix if I don't get off mums net! Loving all the examples xxx

I've had a couple of these experiences. It's quite odd.
Recently I was sat at a train station. The station was pretty quiet. Large open waiting area, the platforms are off to the side as it's an end of line station.
A young woman walked past me, came from behind me and walked along in my eye line, turned to the last platform and went towards the train. She was wearing a very unusual back pack which caught my attention and very short shorts with a very large distinctive tattoo on her leg.

A minute later the same woman walked past me and turned into the last platform.
Given the time passed, there was no way she could of turned and walked back, and I'd have seen her anyway and there's no other way to get from that platform to back behind me.

Edited

It’s not deja vu in the film but the term seems to have morphed now into anything that happens to you thats freaky / impossible or you remember something one way but the reality is different

Sorry meant it is deja vu in the film

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 06/09/2024 10:12

@fizzymizzy yes but that's how it's explained in the film, The Matrix.

Not that I'm trying to be confusing lol!

housethatbuiltme · 06/09/2024 10:15

The simple response is usually that you dreamed it, the space between awake and asleep can feel really real.

Its called 'false awakening', The are hyper realistic as you brain is awake but your body isn't and you believe you are awake and carry out your usual jobs/morning routine/all boring normal everyday things but you actually dozed back off and its only occurring in your head.

Not2identifying · 06/09/2024 10:18

I knew the term and really liked the first film. I wouldn't bother with the sequels.

I remember getting up, getting ready for school, getting on the bus and dozing off ...

Then waking up to find I was still in bed (and late for school!)

Yes but in IRL context it's dejavu (for the purpose of explaining it to OP). I've seen the first film more times than I can count, I know what it means there ;)
