To ask for recommendations for larger children double pushchairs...

DTwins are 4, and very tall. 120cm. Heavy too.

We'd like to do some evening things as a family this winter, several late fireworks displays, some evening Christmas markets, and they both tire quite quickly after 6pm. We want something they could snuggle up in, with enough visibility that they can still see what's going on, but comfy/spacious enough that they could fall asleep if needs be.

We do have one of those trolleys that you can load up for the beach, which they are too heavy to sit in now, and are too big to share a space like this without being a tangle of legs booting each other.

They haven't been in a buggy for the best part of a year Boy twin is quite lazy and would happily sit in a buggy were we to ever use one again, but we can't get a single, as girl twin is a lot more "no I'm a big girl," but also contrary enough to want to sit in a buggy if she thought her brother was getting the only ride available. So, a double buggy is the only thing possible really.

Is there a really big stroller that would be suitable for us to take to events like this this? Or an alternative? I'm rather short, and slim (essentially a bit weak lol), so carrying one for any period of time isn't really a possibility for me now they're so big. DH can carry one. But it would be nice if we could set them down into something where they could nap and we could relax a little.

Thank you

4 is quite old to be using a pushchair unless there is some mobility issue.

I have a big 4 year old and couldn't imagine wheeling him around

This depends massively on how much you walk though. No one judges putting a 4 year old in a car seat and driving everywhere. I know a lady who didn't have a car and walked everywhere, covering several miles just getting the kids to school and nursery. Her Reception daughter would hop in the Out n About because she was tired after school and having already walked a mile or two. No one would have questioned if they'd covered even a fraction of those miles by car. I consider my child's school pretty local but on the days I do the school run that's 5 miles of walking - my pre-schooler will ride her bike (riding without stabilisers at just turned 3) but I'll have no issues putting him in a buggy for part the way some days aged 4 when at least 80% of the other parents are driving anyway.

Some running buggies are big enough. Alternatively you could buy second hand - or hire - a carrier such as a preschool tula.

You also have the option of one in the carrier and one in the beach wagon.

My five year old sometimes hitches a lift on my back - lower than a piggy back, wrapping her legs around my waist and arms around my neck. Obviously no help for a nap...

I suspect some of those who think 4 year olds never need carrying tend to use the car more and don't try walking a few miles late in the evening with them!

Mumofthree2024 · 07/09/2024 19:07

Out n about are releasing a wagon soon, pre orders are open, designed to hold 2 kids up to age 7. May fit the brief better than the nipper.
if not the baby jogger would be bigger seats. My 6 y/o is very tall and can fit in the seats. (Not that he does, but we recently sold one and he got in it as I was checking it to list)

But second hand unless you have money to burn! Fits through shop doorways and onto most buses. So easy to push. And will last.

Agree with this. These are brilliant. A fiend of ours would use these for trailing younger sister going to older brother’s football/rugby through the winter and she (and a friend sometimes) would snuggle up in there with a blanket and there’s lots of room for other stuff around their legs. Like a covered version of your beach trolley.

oustedbymymate · 07/09/2024 19:12

Bugaboo donkey will fit the bill.

OneJumpAhead · 07/09/2024 19:15

You can hire bike trailers with extra wheel and handles. Just like a buggy. We have found them great for bigger kids even on hikes www.kidsbiketrailers.co.uk/collections/trailer-hire/products/hire-a-burley-d-liteâ„¢-x-double

We walk loads and always have. We do drive some places but mainly walk. He was walking without the pushchair from a young age (2).

blahblahblah24 · 07/09/2024 19:34

I understand it would be a lot harder with 2 in tow though.

BarnacleBeasley · 07/09/2024 19:47

I have a double mountain buggy and I think you could fit quite tall kids in. Basically anything you get will be too heavy to carry around comfortably though, I'd be pushing it with all our stuff in until the kids were ready to get in.

Fair enough. My older child was booted out the pram at 2 for the younger one and I look back now and wonder why I made life hard for myself. As someone doing the school run on foot (and seeing people along our route get in the car) and a teacher of many years, I'm pretty confident most 4 year olds are not walking more than a handful of miles a day maximum.

That's lovely. We didn't have a pushchair for either of our 4 yr old singleton children either.

Tell me, how did you get on with your twins?

I've been googling these and on the one hand they look fab.

On the other they look gargantuan and also, the front arm/wheel just out loads...would this be a nightmare to manoeuvre around a Christmas market?

Honestly, four is too old for a buggy unless you are actually saying that they have SEN. If you put four year old twins I'm a buggy and their school or nursery friends see them they will be bullied.
If they can't walk to events, you can't carry them or they will moan, you need to get a babysitter or go home early. Most four year olds need to be in bed by 8 at the latest.
Who do you want the buggy for, OP, is it you or the twins ?

FunLurker · 07/09/2024 19:59

Not read all the thread, so apologies if already been said but could you get 2 buggies and push one each if it's so you can family things?

ODFOD Hmm

My almost 7 year old fit comfortably in my sister's mountain buggy duet during the summer (she had fallen over and cut her leg badly or she would not normally be in a pushchair).
I know you mentioned having a trolley/wagon but I just wanted to mention that I got a tecknet one off Amazon that has a very high weight limit. It's a large trolley and I could comfortably fit all three of my kids (almost 7years, almost 5years and almost 3years) in it during the summer holidays when we went to some events later in the evening that we knew they would struggle walking home from.

crystalmazelab · 07/09/2024 20:06

I have twins and my boy twin is exceptionally lazy they are also 4 😅 there is no way I would manage to push them in a pushchair especially with winter coats on - it was hard enough with the joie aire 6 months ago even on a slight hill

I'm a single parent so tend to just plan around activities - for Christmas markets I'd have a relaxing day before hand - maybe even break my own rule by letting them nap for a bit so they are more awake in the evening

crystalmazelab · 07/09/2024 20:07

@LePetitMaman love your come back to the previous poster by the way 😂

cavepainter · 07/09/2024 20:08

@LePetitMaman this is totally irrelevant. Try having two children 9 months apart, or a ten month old walker.
It won't stop them getting bullied for being in a baby buggy at four.
They are still too old and you are prioritising adult needs here. If they are asleep in a buggy, they are NOT getting any benefit from a fireworks display or a Christmas market. Get a babysitter.

crystalmazelab · 07/09/2024 20:10

I found the out and about nipper hard to get on with by the way - I don't think it will have enough space for 2 4 years olds in coats etc

Have you seen those trolleys rather than the beach style ones that you pull that you push like a shopping trolley? Although they are always hideously expensive might be able to get a second hand one? And I can imagine they'd still be really heavy?

You can remove the arm when using it as a trolley. And honesty they’re not as big as you’d think. I think a much better option for older ones.

notanothernamechange24 · 07/09/2024 20:15

What about these @LePetitMaman? Would a hop on and off backpack carrier work? Perhaps in combination with the wagon?

OneFastDuck · 07/09/2024 20:17

Maybe they don't walk enough, I honestly can't imagine buying a buggy for 4yr olds! Get them out and about a bit more- do you just drive everywhere? I walk everywhere so my kids do from small. My 4yo would be so embarrassed to be seen in a pushchair- he'd say he's not a baby.

They don't make them because you shouldn't be using them unless there's SEN. Absolutely ridiculous, also you sound like you've a right chip on your shoulder about "twins!". 1 adult pushing a pushchair and holding hands with a child is no different to 2 adults each pushing a pushchair and holding hands with a child. I'm not sure why you'd be carrying one folded up.

If you really need one though try looking at foreign brands, when I was in Portugal they seemed to have 5/6yr old in pushchairs. Or American brands as theyr children are much larger younger. Chicco or peg perago.
