DH and I are moving out of London.

We are considering both cities. Which city itself do you prefer?

Our budget is £800-950k (depends on a couple of factors we are waiting to see fall into play)

I'd go Solihull with that budget.

Gummybear23 · 05/09/2024 20:49

Lived in both including London.
I'd stay in London.

NotDavidTennant · 05/09/2024 20:50

Out of the options I'd pick Warwickshire, but more because it's easier to travel to Oxford which has better options for museums and eating out than Birmingham.

We have decided we would live in Stratford/Warwick/Leamington Spa if we moved to Birmingham

And Knutsford, Altrincham, Wilmslow, Aderley Edge if we moved to Manchester.

We have done trips to these towns but always neglected looking around the actual city centres beyond a meal out.

We have a healthy budget, I homeschool my son (nd) and dh has offices in both cities.

We spend a lot of time out shopping, eating and going to museums and plays.

"We have decided we would live in Stratford/Warwick/Leamington Spa if we moved to Birmingham"

This statement makes zero sense. Leamington Spa is a good 45 minutes from Birmingham. They're completely different places.

Oooh. Lovely parts of South Manchester/Cheshire there and you’ve got a very healthy budget.

Alty, Wilmslow and Knutsford are fab. Alderley Edge I find a bit Cheshire Housewives.
Theres lovely national Trust properties very local. Always lots going on. Fabulous places to eat and drink. All on public transport lines to the city centre.

NyeRobey · 05/09/2024 20:54

Manchester. The city centre is quite compact. I don't like Birmingham much, not sure why.

Clearinguptheclutter · 05/09/2024 20:56

Manchester!
or even better, Leeds

I don't get the love for Leeds at all!

RaraRachael · 05/09/2024 21:05

Much prefer Birmingham. The centre had a good feel about it and it's nice and near places like the Cotswolds for a day out.

I absolutely hated Manchester. I can't think of a single redeeming thing about it.

Tiddlywinkly · 05/09/2024 21:07

DrMorbius · 05/09/2024 19:57

You may want to think again, if you think £950k will get you anything decent in
Wilmslow, Aderley Edge.
Knutsford, Altrincham, probably a 3-4 bedroom detached in a moderate area.

This. South Manchester isn't cheap.

Although I still recommend Manchester

If you want Birmingham for all the reasons you've mentioned, then move to Birmingham!
Don't move to Warwick so you can enjoy trendy new cafes etc in a city (many of which are in suburbs, so if you wanted to do that you'd have to walk to the station (let's say 20-30 mins), train to the centre (40 mins), then bus to (eg) King's Heath, Moseley etc (20-30 mins). And the same in reverse. And the train ticket is probably £10.

Whatever you do, don't move to Stratford if ease of visiting Bham is a priority!

Warwick and Leamington are lovely places to live, and access to Bham is easy, but every weekend would soon grate.

Have you considered Solihull? More trains, only 10 mins, and probably buses too.

Wherever you end up, you're unlikely to be within a short walk of a station (area around Leam station is largely student, and the stock of nice houses is limited, Warwick isn't very big so you're unlikely to find something very close)

The advantage of Warwick/Leamington (and Bham) over Mcr is that it's closer to London (with the choice of 3 different train operators).

Stratford is 40m on a direct line to Birmingham moor street? It’s pretty easy!

Timetotrimtoenails · 05/09/2024 21:14

Is does sound like the best option given your family's wants/priorities and budget is to just stay in London OP.

Unless the reason you're thinking of moving out is that you and/or your DH aren't originally from London and want to move nearer family?

My friend moved here from London (we live in the SE) but she wasn't really into the "London lifestyle". She didn't tend to go to central London except for work and now tends to only go to London to visit her parents.

Going by your posts I think you might have different wants to my friend and you might miss London a lot more than she does.

BabaYetu · 05/09/2024 21:16

I would pick Leeds and Liverpool over Manchester any day of the week. Birmingham is quite nice too.

Crikeyalmighty · 05/09/2024 21:16

I don't much like either- ( I appreciate others love them) and the nice bits of both to live in including the commuter areas are suprisingly pricey- at that level which you will know as are looking at the pricey areas- and with your budget you may as well live in Guildford or Brighton or Winchester kind of pricey , with easy access to London - any reason why you are looking elsewhere ? Is it work or just fancy a change?

In all honesty I preferred Liverpool and the Wirral or posh bits of Leeds to both of them- is there a reason for Birmingham/ Manchester??

Peakypolly · 05/09/2024 21:31

Birmingham has a brilliant 'foodie' community and quite a few theatre/comedy options. It is super convenient to travel there from the towns you mention by train. If DS is into theatre, obviously the RSC in Stratford offer loads of events/cheap tickets for youngsters.
Travel back to London will be easier than from Manchester which may become important as your DS gets older.

browneyes77 · 05/09/2024 21:39

Ozanj · 05/09/2024 12:25

Depends on your budget. In Birmingham you won’t a decent place to live even in a suburb for less than 400-500k. Whereas for that price you will find something decent around Mancester.

This is utter rubbish.

Those area aren’t in south Manchester. Have you heard of a county called Cheshire?

browneyes77 · 05/09/2024 21:47

Brummie here 🙋🏽‍♀️

I love my hometown. I also love Manchester.

People in both cities are super friendly and down to earth.

Both places have their good and bad spots.

Birmingham has had a whole heap of investment put into it over the years.

Entertainment wise both have a lot to offer.

Although I’d say Manchester is more bars and clubs, whereas Birmingham/West Mids has a lot more in terms of museums, cultural stuff etc

One key thing the West Midlands has going for it, is that it’s central. You’re pretty much 2 hours from a majority of places. So easy to get back to London if you need to see family/friends. But also a straight car journey up the M6 to Manchester or straightforward journey on the train.

So, (and this may sound biased) I’d go for Birmingham. Because the transport links are better.

Clarro · 05/09/2024 12:57

Thanks for outline. Much appreciated.

Between new concerts (ds likes classical)/ plays, different talks/exhibitions I think ds and I could make do. Ds will happily go to a museum on me week and listen to a tour and then go back the following week and just draw his favourite things.

We spent time in a small US city and despite it being a bit dead we always found something interesting for ds to look forward to after a bit of digging.

Birmingham is not tired and run down at all.

I’m not surprised in the slightest to see that most people on this thread prefer Manchester. Birmingham is a bit soulless compared to Manchester and much rougher. Manchester is more ‘London-y’ than Birmingham, and has much more nice things to do. Also, I wouldn’t want to live in a city that has such an incompetent local authority. Consider Altrincham if you want somewhere really nice but still be close to the city.

I haven’t seen that? Seems a fairly even split to me?

Babadookinthewardrobe · 05/09/2024 21:58

I much prefer Birmingham

BlueBobble · 05/09/2024 22:05

Manchester! With good access to all of the northern cities, the Peak District, the lakes, north wales, and also Birmingham and London. Oh and Leeds.

I mean I'd choose smart parts of Liverpool or Sheffield myself but you will never tire of the north.

MostlyGhostly · 05/09/2024 18:55

Likewise, Knutsford, Wilmslow, Alderley Edge and Altrincham are in Cheshire, not Manchester

Altrincham is in Greater Manchester
