To hate homes under the hammer

I know most young families can't afford to buy houses outright, but I see all these more affordable homes go to greedy landlords just in it for the profit. Eugh it makes me sick! Would be so refreshing to see some of these homes go to people who won't just tosh them up cheaply to sell again or rent them out

I agree with you @Cappuccinowithonesugarplease - and at the risk of sounding like a total arsehole, I find it highly amusing when I see a 'rogue tenants/crappy landlords' type programme, and you've got somebody who rents out a property they have purchased as a 'buy-to-let.'

Then the tenant doesn't pay the rent (and it takes about 6 months to get them out, and they lose about 3 or 4 thousand pounds,) I just think 'that'll teach you to be greedy and grabby.' I do NOT include people who are renting their home out because they were forced to move because of personal issues or problems, (and they can't sell the property!) Just the ones who buy properties to rent out.

I don't think anybody in this country should own more than one property, (the one that they live in.) Every other additional property should be bought by the local authority on a compulsory purchase order - for the price that the landlord paid for it. So if they got it for £38,000 in 1999-2003 or something, (and it's worth £180,000 now,) they still only get £38,000 .. I mean, think of the money they've made off it, renting it out!

Then the local authority(s) can rent them out to people as social housing!

A FIFTH of rented properties in the UK are owned by private landlords. Imagine how many more social housing properties will be available! (1000s and 1000s and 1000s actually! Probably more than a million!)

I stopped watching ages ago when on an episode there was a landlord (think it was in the Burnley area) who had something like 900 properties and they said they were aiming to get to 2500 properties.

NapTrappedAgain · 04/09/2024 16:42

I agree OP.

Used to really enjoy it as easy viewing but it became a much harder watch seeing all these landlords congratulated for shoving yet another cheap property into their bulging portfolio whilst my generation struggle to get on the property ladder at all.

Both the landlords and the flippers have normalised viewing houses as investments rather than homes and I find that attitude quite unpalatable now.

The music choices are good though.

You don't have to watch it. I like to see the before and after, like getting ideas not that I can do anything lol

If I wanted to get ideas for renovation or decoration, I wouldn’t be relying on Homes Under The Hammer 😂

spaceshooter · 04/09/2024 19:30

Bloke on last week bought a perfectly decent flat a but run down but fine and redecorated it in a magnolia hideousness with an ugly vinyl floor and cheap looking kitchen. It used to be good fun, now, no.

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 04/09/2024 19:32

My favourite one was when the agent viewed it after work
“well the kitchen is not good enough quality to sell, renting it will be fine”

brilliant attitude let’s let the renters have the shit, it’s all we deserve. and then, get pissed off when it breaks after 6 months.

cantthinkofausername26 · 04/09/2024 20:46

I guess you could also look at it as employment for labourers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians etc and the landlords are doing their job. This is their livelihood. You could say the same if any business person, you're greedy buying something cheaply and then selling it for a profit. Everyone has to make money somehow

Eugh it boils my blood so much! I hope these people get their comeuppance one day. Greedy bastards.

It's not even work for local builders / trades sometimes , it's often their family and friends doing the work for mates rates. Sometimes themselves, but rarely can they do it all themselves. Especially the more expensive specialty jobs.
You can tell the ones not paying mega bucks

longtompot · 05/09/2024 08:48

I used to watch it all the time but stopped when it started to be just landlords in Liverpool or Nottingham buying all the properties in every street to rent.
I have started to watch it again but the format is tired.
It makes me sad when perfectly good houses are torn down to build two or more new builds in its place. There was one yesterday which was lovely with a huge garden and the couple replaced it with two new builds.
I like it when they go back to properties shown years ago and see their transformation.
I love it when it's someone buying to do up to live in, especially when it's a first home or a forever home.
I especially like it when the homes are brought back to life from, well, basically a ruined shell.

Ghilliegums · 05/09/2024 08:53

I love it when they say things like 'oh the damp wasn't as bad as we thought so we just slapped a coat of paint over it'

And those disgusting grey carpets.

And the grey kitchens.

And just the...grey. Endless grey.

I love Homes Under the Hammer

Only a fifth?

That seems very very low, everyone I know renting rents from a private landlord and landlords like mine own 100s of houses. He apparently now bored of buy-to-lets and moved onto building new builds (which will be built for £2.50 and a bit of string knowing my cheap ass slumlord).

Ghilliegums · 05/09/2024 08:57

Although I do agree HUTH is less interesting now it's basically rhe same three landlords buying old terraces and turning them into 10 flats with plastic lawn edging.

Hopefully the awful grey trend will die a horrible death now though because everything is just 'cheap landlord grey'.

Carrieslostshoe · 05/09/2024 08:59

The one I think is excreable is The Great House Giveaway. That's an awful con of a programme as far as I can see, and the man who presents it seems to expect people on the show to be cravenly grateful.

Agree with all the previous comment on Homes under the hammer!

I looked out of curiosity into buying a buy to let house, one is frankly not worth anything and if you bought a portfolio then after tax and accounting for maintenance, you would need a minimum of 10 to make a basic living off it. Each house (in the North east not sure about london etc...) bought cash outright would generate £4000 profit annually (although that annual profit would be entirely wiped out one year if it needed a boiler or roof etc...).

2,500 houses however would generate approx. £10 million per year though.

900 house would be about £3,600,000 income.

I had to stop watching it for the ridiculous music. They try to find a song that matches up with either what the presenter/buyer has just said or what is being shown at that time.

So for example buyer says 'we aren't going to rent it out we are making it our house' cue Our House by Madness playing. Drives me insane and I had to stop watching

That's the best bit. I think it's funny. I think the person who chooses the music must be so happy and that they must love their job.

This thread is just another 'all hate on LL's thread'. Nothing wrong with Homes Under the Hammer. They buy at auction. The houses are usually wrecks and need considerable work to bring them back to being habitable. On Rightmove near to where I live there are 33 3 bedroom houses for sale for under £250k. There are 47 2 bedroom houses. Some have been on the market for over 3 months. Clearly they are available for FTB to purchase yet they haven't. If I buy another it's 'greedy LL buying another house stopping FTB getting a property'. What stops many FTB's from buying a property is a lack of a deposit and/or not earning enough to satisfy mortgage multipliers or only being in temporary/fixed term employment. Not everyone can afford to buy a property and LA/housing associations do not have enough housing stock. Without the PRS many more families with DC would be stuck in temporary accommodation.

caringcarer · 05/09/2024 09:19

Nothing to stop housing associations or LA to buy houses for sale either but they don't.

Yes, you are right. You absolutely serve the public good and landlording is effectively a public service. We should all fall at your feet to thank you.

Sartre · 05/09/2024 09:54

I’ve always enjoyed the show and like watching genuine couples renovate a home for themselves but hate it when it’s landlords with a giant portfolio, especially the ones who do the cheapest renovation they can get away with then rent the house out for way more than it’s worth. Also can’t stand watching the beautiful detached homes get turned into HMOs.
