Abolishing single person CT discount

It won’t affect me, but this is really crap if Labour bring it in. I can’t imagine they will actually, it would affect so many people who already financially struggle from living alone.

AIBU to think this is DM stirring the pot?

I’m not convinced of that at all. I have no opinion on what might end up in the budget what I’m not doing I’d creating/spreading rumours and twisting anything any Labour MP says to screw the worst possible interpretation out of it.

Hang on you've made multiple posts saying she did confirm she wouldn't scrap the SOD, my only point has been that she didn't, that's not a rumour, it's a statement of fact. I don't recall saying anything about what Labour would do.

Genuinely wasn’t being snidey. I often see posts on here that are obviously from journalists and this one smacks of one. They quote mumsnetters all the time!

Ok I see. In which case I humbly apologise. I’m sorry.

Every one pays for the electricity and gas they use. But I do get a discount on my water bill, which is right - I use far less than the family of four next door. Cant have a water meter which would mean paying even less, so it is right that my lower usage is reflected in my fees. Just like I produce less rubbish and use fewer local public services. So I pay less which is right. But hey, carry on with ridiculous comments.

Well you said all utilities should have a single person discount so how would that work with gas and electricity? Would you get a percentage discount, lower unit price or what? If you use less gas and electricity than the family next door you will pay less without a single person discount unless you decide to use as much as 4 people.

I don’t mind, really, I’d rather have a decent service for everyone. Plus my bins are often really full! I don’t have children but I’m fine about contributing to funding for education.

I agree, we all need the next generation to be educated or in years to come who will be the doctors/dentists/electricians, who will keep our cars running?

I take it you could afford to not have the SPD then? Many people already struggling will be even worse off.

Well you’d just charge full rate to everyone and those claiming benefits would get a reduction just like now.

That’s the bit that pisses me off. If you get benefits you don’t appear to have to pay for anything. Why..surely that’s the whole point of being given tax payers money to pay your bills.

I am on UC, and still have to pay 20% of CT. There is no 100% discount where I live. And I still have to pay for everything else. I don't get a discount on food or utilities for being on UC.
Some councils were even seeking to abolish CT support. Bristol City Council put the feelers out a couple of years ago.
