to let dog on the sofa?

Got a new puppy, never had dogs on seating before, always had their own beds. DH wants to keep it this way, I'm happy to give up half of 'my' sofa (we have two opposite each other), AIBU?

The settee in question is an old leather one from IKEA that was bought second hand for £50 if that makes a difference. Pup would only be on sofa when I am, will still have own sleeping quarters elsewhere.

YABU and the pup stays on the floor
YANBU puppy snuggles!!

Puppy snuggles! Our dog has always been welcome on the sofas with us. She's part of the family so I wouldn't have it any other way.

MissUltraViolet · 03/09/2024 12:00

I have a throw on the sofa and both dogs are welcome to use it whenever they want (currently have a puppy laid on the back of the sofa behind my head) I'd care even less if it was an old leather sofa.

I am by no means a crazy animal person but our dogs are part of the family.

thursdaymurderclub · 03/09/2024 12:01

there is nothing worse when visiting someones house and their 'baby' jumps all over you while you sit on the sofa!

my DIL has a labrador, thats 3 years old now, its wrecked their brand new sofa, its covered in dog hair, it has its own 'spot' and god forbid you sit in it. when you are sitting trying to have a cup of tea and a chat, its all over you, nudging you to play, breathing in your face, dropping manky toys in your lap.. and they just laugh if off as oh 'insert name here' just wants to play!

dogs need discipline, and dogs although may be invited up on the sofa occasionally, please don't make it 'their place'

TenderChicken · 03/09/2024 12:02

Of course they're allowed on the sofa.

Laiste · 03/09/2024 12:03

No my dogs always stayed on the floor. No sofa's no beds.

And the cats don't go on the work tops or the dinning room tables.

If you let them as puppies they won't understand if you change your mind later on (better sofas, allergies and long term health issues) and that's a shame.

TheFlis · 03/09/2024 12:06

Our dog is allowed on the casual sofas in one room but not the fancier sofas in another, he 100% knows the difference and never tries to get on the nice sofas, bless him.

GSDmom · 03/09/2024 12:10

No dogs on any furniture in our house, can't be dealing with the fur honestly.

ntmdino · 03/09/2024 12:12

The thing most dogs love the most is being able to sit with their humans. For the sake of a bit of fur here and there, it's worth it to them, which makes it worth it for us.

Just a throw on the sofa, and a spare for when it's in the washing machine. Simples.

Springisintheairohyeah · 03/09/2024 12:16

I allow both my dogs on the sofa, I always have throws on which can be changed regularly as needed. The main thing is for you both to be consistent - so they're either not allowed on, allowed on freely, or only allowed on if invited - agree one, and stick to it. And teach an off command to ensure you can move them off if and when needed. I love nothing more than a cuddle with my dogs while watching a good film

ginasevern · 03/09/2024 12:17

I always loved a good snuggle on the sofa with my dog. My advice, get rid of the DH. Problem solved.

Purplecatshopaholic · 03/09/2024 12:19

Of course they should be allowed on the sofa! Use washable throws if it’s that much of a concern. Nothing better than sharing the sofa with your lovely dog. And I speak as someone who is doing that with two of hers right now.

Pogggle · 03/09/2024 12:29

I couldn't even imagine mine not being sat on my lap snuggling whilst I'm watching tv in the eveningBlush

BeansOnToast32 · 03/09/2024 12:33

Can't imagine not letting my dog on the sofa because evening cuddles are our favourite. She's only 6.7kg though so doesn't take up much room and usually lays stretched out on my legs (reclining sofa) or lays squashed up next to me.

We have throws that are washed regularly and the dog is kept clean. She wipes her own paws on the mat and I spray her down with shampoo stuff and dry her off is she been outside when it's wet. Luckily she's not a wet weather dog, she will refuse to walk if there's any amount of rain and will quickly do what she needs to do before going back inside. She never gets properly dirty.

Jifmicroliquid · 03/09/2024 12:36

Dog cuddles on the sofa are the best. Just get some throws that can be bunged in the wash.

wastingtimeonhere · 03/09/2024 12:38

We,have an old 2 seater leather sofa...its the dogs...😆we put throws over it and remove them and antibac the sofa if visitors come. She knows she has to share her sofa and will lay on the floor huffing and sulking when visitors arrive.
She won't sit with you or on your lap, she likes her own space.

FanFckingTastic · 03/09/2024 12:52

Have you got a puppy so that it can be part of your family? If so, then treat it as family, sofa cuddles included.

gannett · 03/09/2024 13:45

We don't have a dog but visiting dogs are always welcome on our sofa. They look so happy and comfortable once they're up there snuggling with a human (or by themselves tbh). Chuck a throw on it, hoover afterwards, no big deal.

I'm going to use this in my argument for!! The kids are on my side too (although one did point out that as he is at university it doesn't really affect him!)

My dog is only allowed on the sofa (throws) when invited. I once read that a dog that cuddles with you after eating really loves you or at least sees you as its pack. It is an evening routine after food. We cuddle. His ears are like velvet - 45kg Doberman.

TortillasAndSalsa · 03/09/2024 17:24

I frequently end up in the middle of a German shepherd sandwich on the couch and it's very cosy and stress relieving

HappiestSleeping · 03/09/2024 18:05

Ours is allowed on the sofa we use by invitation. He has a sofa with a throw on it that he can use.

Dogs can definitely be trained to be allowed on one or tge other, or by invitation and you can also change your mind later if you get a different one. They won't hold it against you.

I agree that part of the joy is the cuddles, but it should be by your invitation.

SpanielintheWorks · 03/09/2024 18:07

For a moment there I thought you meant the dog.

mondaytosunday · 03/09/2024 18:10

Dogs on sofa here. Do you mean it will only be allowed in one piece of furniture? Good luck with that!

birdsongfromtheshedroof · 03/09/2024 18:13

I'm one of those crap first time dog owners... pre dog and for the first few months the rules were;
No dogs on furniture
No dogs up stairs

Dog is currently laying on the sofa next to me and now sleeps in our bed 🤦‍♀️🤣

AdviceNeeded2024 · 03/09/2024 18:14

Mine comes on the sofa. She’s small though and short haired so doesn’t malt that much at all, love it when she snuggles with me in the evening 🥰

I have a throw on the sofa. Couldn’t imagine not having her on it! If you decide not to let you dog on though you must be firm, if they aren’t allowed they never come on occasionally for a treat. Dogs can’t distinguish between being allowed on occasionally or all the time so it must be never if you don’t want it on there.

You never know the dog might melt your H’s heart and he’ll be quite happy to have it on his lap!
