Sleeping on the floor question

Treehouse1a · 03/09/2024 09:00

Hi ,
My partner and I used to live in a 1st floor flat, and have already been sleeping on the floor for a long time. However, recently we have moved to a banglow (all ground floor). Since the weather is changing, the floor is becoming colder and a little uncomfortable.
We like to be able to sleep on the floor if we can tolerate it. We would like to avoid bed or thick mattress.
Anyone else doing the same? Do you have any advice for us about warming the floor? The floor has carpets. Will placing plastic under the carpet help?
Thanks

Eh? Like literally on the floor? Why?

TheNormalRules · 03/09/2024 09:02

My advice is to get a bed.

Glitterybee · 03/09/2024 09:04

Why would you choose to do this?

get a bed!

Sorenlorrenson · 03/09/2024 09:06

What are you on about?

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 03/09/2024 09:07

Rug and a foam mattress topper?

Treehouse1a · 03/09/2024 09:07

We sleep better on the floor. The floor is carpeted. We also use a blanket, and sleep on the blanket. We already have a bed and a mattress ( bought by landlord). We are trying to avoid bed or thick mattress.

There is a thin, sheet insulation material called reflectix which might fit the bill for under the carpet or maybe you could think about a real Japanese futon with tatami mat.

Tdcp · 03/09/2024 09:10

A wool rug might be a good option? It could be enough to insulate you from the floor without being like a mattress

OneFastDuck · 03/09/2024 09:10

When camping they advise double or triple the layers under you vs on top of you.
Cardboard would be much better insulator than plastic. Or sheepskin would be great. Tatami mats might help.

If you don't like padding you would still be better on bed raised off the floor but you could just put a panel over the slats instead of a mattress?

Geneticsbunny · 03/09/2024 09:14

Foam roll mats for camping will help
Basically the same as yoga mats

Treehouse1a · 03/09/2024 09:16

We are not originally from the UK. In our culture everyone sleeps on a thin cotton mattress ( without a bed). However, unlike the UK, the climate there is dry.

Anything else we have to worry about if we continue sleeping the way we are now? Do we have to worry about mold, dump ground, etc? Do you breath more dust particles if you are sleeping on the bed vs sleeping on the floor?
My partner and I will listen to your advice especially since most of you were born and raised in this climate.

Thanks again for your time.

What about a Futon or just a Futon mattress? The latter is thin but comfy, and a full futon is only inches off the floor

MonsteraMama · 03/09/2024 09:17

Get a Japanese tatami mat? Or a Vietnamese reed sleeping mat?

Fairysteps11 · 03/09/2024 09:18

A camping mat may be just the thing for you!

Treehouse1a · 03/09/2024 09:19

After my last post, I saw some of the replies. Thank you. We will keep looking at more replies.

If you go to a camping store, you can get a foil mat - campers use these outside to keep the cold off them. You can get a foam roll to go on top for comfort, they're usually just a few inches think and you can get single or double size :)

FOJN · 03/09/2024 09:25

If your room is heated and you are airing the space on the floor where you sleep then you shouldn't have any problems with mold or damp but you could use a dehumidifier if that started to become a problem.

Borninabarn32 · 03/09/2024 09:25

I'd suggest using the raised bed but put a plywood sheet over the slats instead of a mattress then use whatever makes you feel comfortable. You could get a mattress topper that is more similar to the mattresses you're used to.

British homes get damp and cold. You'll want to lift anything off the floor regularly to stop damp getting trapped under it but the amount of stuff you'd need to keep the cold coming from the floor away from you would make it so soft you'd be better raising yourselves off the floor on a firm surface.

DanceTheDevilBackIntoHisHole · 03/09/2024 09:28

Carpets get so dusty. If either of you has any asthma or anything I really wouldn't sleep on a carpet

PlanningTowns · 03/09/2024 09:28

Something foilbacked to reflect the cold down. Double bubble if you use a foil emergency blanket under you as it also reflects the heat up.

but in Japan it gets very cold and humid so look at how they do it.

PenelopePitStrop · 03/09/2024 09:34

Some futons come on very low wooden frames. And you can get futons with cotton or wool filling, which would be warmer.

I think you do need some ventilation underneath you unless you are rolling the mattress / mat / futon up every day or you will get condensation and mold

Google ‘low futon bed base’ and futon, and tatami mats .

As born in a barn says, this is important - you need to lift whatever you put down fairly frequently to let air circulate, or you can find that things start growing under there (I had this happen to me in a bungalow, with a standard mattress while we were waiting to afford a bed to put it on)

I have a giant sheepskin rug that I can happily sleep on directly on the floor - but it does smell a bit.. rustic.. you'd be better off with a camping SIM (self inflating mat - try Decathlon) or any of the other suggestions here - you could probably get a thin futon mattress somewhere if you went looking around.

Treehouse1a · 03/09/2024 10:10

Thank you everyone. I am leaning towards what borninabarn (and others) suggested. I want to make changes to our bed and then start utilizing it.
