Oh dear god, i have just had to out up with the worst smell i have ever encountered in my life!!!

It was like rotting corpses, stale fish and urine

This man was just happily sat there smelling like death while every single person on the bus was gagging (literally) even the LOs were complaining

Even now, 30 miutes after my experience im still gagging at the thought of it

Am i BU to think he should of been asked to get off the bus?? i bet i am, but why should anyone have to endure that??

I like perfume.
I do have a very sensitive sense of smell and bad pongs give me a headache so maybe I'm less tolerant than most.

expatinscotland · 19/04/2008 00:41

bad pongs make me puke. after having the girls - i chucked my guts up for months whilst pregnant - i vomit pretty easily.

and i had to use public transport to get to work and back every day.

so i got off the bus if it wasn't possible to move seats.

LyraSilvertongue · 19/04/2008 00:42

Buses are full of cheesy-smelling people imo.

Janni · 19/04/2008 00:43

Absolutely lyra For a man to stink like the OP describes I would bet my life that he has mental health issues.

madamez · 19/04/2008 00:43

Well a while ago some teenagers got thrown off a bus for being Goths. (ie wearing odd clothes, not for singing Sisters of Mercy songs at other passengers). WHile it's not nice to be in a confined space with someone who pongs, it won't kill you, and I would't be at all in favour of throwing people off buses for stuff that's not actually behaviour (shouting, violence, leaping about...) And even in the case of slightly odd behaviour (praying aloud, twitching, having a conversation with an imaginary moth) unless it's really interfering with other passengers, you just have to put up with it.
RIght now I am having a fairly major psoriasis flare-up (and it is farking well spreading on to my face, grr) and I can sort of understand that someone who doesn't know about psoriasis might think I was contagious and not want to sit next to me. But you bet I'd make a huge fuss if I was chucked off a bus because of it.

LyraSilvertongue · 19/04/2008 00:46

Madamez, are you saying that a bad smell doesn't interfere with other passengers? Because it interferes with every single breath they take if they're gagging on the smell.

scottishmummy · 19/04/2008 00:51

Not necessarily!the pharmacist, the solicitor, the fragrant are all susceptible to Mental illness not just the stereotypical bus smelly man

fwiw, PND is a mental illness. do we categorise all mums with PND as smelly?

metal illness manifests in many complex ways and despite scaremongering the pt is more at risk from the public than a risk to the public

prejudice is unfortunately all too common in regard to psychiatry

madamez · 19/04/2008 01:11

Lyra, what I meant was that a person who smells or looks different is not actively trying to engage with other passengers, whereas a person who prays/yowls/suffers from some or other mental health issue might just be gibbering to him/herself or might be attempting to engage with other passengers and the latter might be enough of a problem for the bus driver to intervene.
And smells won't kill you. If it's upsetting you that much, get off the bus. It's not uncommon for someone (let's have a nice non-blameable example like a toddler) to vomit profusely on public transport - even when the vomiter has got off, even when the vomiter or the vomiter's mum has done the best possible job with wet wipes and tissues, the bus is still going to reek of spew. Not nice, but it would be even more not nice for a bus driver to insist on a sick child being thrown off a bus.

oh God PLEASDE someone tell me to go to bed..
this thread is making me want to heave and I've had too much wine

LyraSilvertongue · 19/04/2008 01:15

I still think the stinky man should get off, not all the other passengers whose noses he's offending. A sick toddler is a different kettle of fish.

LyraSilvertongue · 19/04/2008 01:17

Me too Janni [too much wine emoticon]. Weren't we here last night too?
JANNI GO TO BED! IT"S TOO LATE TO STILL BE UP>
I shall take my own advise. Night all.

LyraSilvertongue · 19/04/2008 01:18

Advice. Good job this isn't in pedants' corner.

Janni · 19/04/2008 01:22

Thanks, Lyra. Right GOOD NIGHT.

I'm off xx

WowOoo · 19/04/2008 01:33
