Do you go food shopping as a family?

Have realised that we never do. Either I go with Dd, 6 or Dh will nip to the shops for the odd bits needed or I will do the big shop on some Saturdays whilst Dd stays with Dh.
Is that weird, seems a bit sad

Absolutely not…just why🤷‍♀️

TickingAlongNicely · 01/09/2024 22:48

Not unless we are on the way somewhere or way home.
Its a necessity not a fun trip after all.

Invisimamma · 01/09/2024 22:49

No, certainly not. I don't even go myself, I shop online. Hate going to the supermarket.

elizzza · 01/09/2024 22:50

God no, I can’t think of anything worse. I’ll nip in for some bread and milk with the kids but for a big shop one of us has the kids and the other gets to go and shop in peace.

mynameiscalypso · 01/09/2024 22:50

We have done on holiday. I hate it. I got to the stage of making DH and DS wait in the car. We never really go supermarket shopping in the UK as we get most of it via Ocado for which I am very grateful. I can't think of much worse than dragging my 5 year old around a supermarket

Starlingexpress · 01/09/2024 22:50

There is nothing more irritating than s busy supermarket aisle being blocked by Jeremy and Amanda having a prolonged discussed about which brie to buy. Only one adult per household is required to do a food shop.

NImumconfused · 01/09/2024 22:50

No! It mystifies me why people do this, mum, dad and a couple of kids trailing round the supermarket. I never took mine if there was another person available to stay with them, it's no fun for the kids a d you just get in everyone else's way.

SummerSplashing · 01/09/2024 22:50

Why does that seem sad?!

No Mr Tesco delivers.

Gogogo12345 · 01/09/2024 22:51

I have never understood why while families would want to go food shopping together. Usually notice if when there are badly behaved kids. For heavens sake why doesn't one of the parents stay out of the shop with them

Normandy144 · 01/09/2024 22:51

I do our weekly shop online. I hate shopping with my children in the supermarket. They get bored, they ask for stuff and I don't have the patience. At best I'll pop in and do a small top up shop if needed with them but preferably not.

TheLeadbetterLife · 01/09/2024 22:54

Whole families going shopping is an abomination. I live in a touristy area and I hate going to the supermarket in the Summer. Massive families milling around with no proper shopping agenda, taking up all the space at the checkout so you can't get your things on the conveyor belt. Thank god it's September.

WonderingWanda · 01/09/2024 22:56

God no. Why on earth would it be sad? It drives me mad when people take their whole family and clog up the aisles like its a day out. Madness.

Devilsmommy · 01/09/2024 22:57

Me, DH and DS do the big monthly shop together and then it's usually me and ds doing top up shops whilst DH is at work. DS is almost 2 so no choice. Don't understand why it seems so weird 🤷

Allyourdreamsaremadeofstrawberrylemonade · 01/09/2024 22:58

@Devilsmommy No, I meant weird that we don’t do it as a family

OP posts:
StormingNorman · 01/09/2024 22:59

Absolutely not. The big shop is not a team sport. I want to be in and out without anyone making stupid suggestions, slowing me down or deciding they want to change the meal plan halfway round Waitrose. Go alone and go fast 🤣

Also, don’t want to be that annoying couple that spend 5 minutes agonising over which packet of mince to buy while a queue builds up behind them. This actually happened and if you’re interested, they settled on the 10% fat. She wanted 5%, he wanted 20% so kudos to them for compromising (eventually). The queue was five trolleys long and halfway down the veg aisle.

It's not a whole family activity and nor should it be.

Supermarkets are busy enough as it is, without clogging them up with unnecessary people.

I've been shopping online for around 10 years and it's bliss.

RisingSunn · 01/09/2024 23:00

No. No need…it would be a nightmare manoeuvring through the aisles.

HippyKayYay · 01/09/2024 23:01

Fuck no. Why would anyone do that (unless they have no option, i.e. single parent who has to take child/ren with them)? Mine are older now (11 and 9) but they still turn feral in a supermarket for some reason.

BigMandyHarris · 01/09/2024 23:01

Yep, we go together 😊
Too many kids don’t do normal ‘life stuff’ now.

Doublesidedstickytape · 01/09/2024 23:02

The only time we both go is if we’re on our way home from somewhere.
Food shopping too dull to inflict it on both of us (though I do like a rummage through the middle aisles in Aldi).

Sorry I didn't mean you, I meant all the posters who sound horrified at family shopping 🤣

UmopapIsdn · 01/09/2024 23:04

Mine are older teens now so they just stay home but when they were younger they’d often come shopping with us. BUT we shop for 1-2 days at a time so little opportunity for tantrums and boredom. AND we let them choose stuff all the time and who doesn’t like that? I was never allowed to pick anything as a child! gets out tiny violin

Nah mate. You're not taking a stand against modern parenting, you're just being annoying.

longdistanceclaraclara · 01/09/2024 23:06

God no, I've never understood why people do this.

TuesdayWhistler · 01/09/2024 23:06

Absolutely not.
I wish no one did.

One in, get done, go home.
And of you see a friend, fuck off out the store before you have a lengthy conversation about what you've been up to for the last 15 years.. I just want some eggs FFS, move..

🤪
