To wonder why the young people don't enjoy drinking alcohol

I mean I know some people have always not really liked it but why as a generation do they feel differently about it?

(Come to mind because I've decided to go sober for a few weeks and it's NO FUN and I want to know their secret).

Bad memories of drunk adults or prefer clean living and health

This 100%, seen so many adults who are usually lovely ruin their kids weddings etc cos of their drunkeness. My orher halves grandmother also has no filter when drunk and really offends people- again otherwise lovely!

No I think that's a genetic thing. I can have one and it's perfect.

I think that then maybe what you don't understand is how it effects other people and therefore why many people are now choosing to drink less. Not just the younger generation. They've just made it more socially acceptable to not go out drinking as your hobby.

It's social media and the fear of being filmed.

Good point, didn’t think of that. Awfully hard to look stunning and alluring whilst chucking up or falling ass over tit.

Instead we have an epidemic of screen and sovisl media addicts....can't go anywhere without their phones

At least with alcohol it's over and done with in one hit

not when they get in their cars and try to drive, or start arguments etc , or cause criminal damage and so on

Why am I reading the title of the OP in the voice of Father Ted? 🤔

How often does that happen? Compared with, say, every A&E on a Friday night.

It will start to happen. Lack of respect and hiding behind a keyboard needs consequences.

Wow! Resorting to insults. Im asking you to explain what you mean, it’s not a difficulty!

Please debate respectfully!

Alcohol should be banned or at least heavily restricted. You certainly shouldn't be able to buy it in supermarkets like regular groceries.

Mermaidsarereal · 01/09/2024 23:17

Just done my 2nd weekend of no alcohol whatsoever (and I don't particularly drink loads) and I agree, it's BORING!!! I think a lot of younger people from what I see are more into drugs than alcohol nowadays.

😂. I was so convinced the end of the first sentence was going to be “and I agree, I feel so much better for it!”

RienDeRienNon · 02/09/2024 00:04

They can’t afford it. Plus mobile phones and cameras must take the edge off.

Aintgointogoa · 02/09/2024 01:44

Haven't RTFT but my son (now in his '40's so not really the 'young' demographic) barely drinks at all. He is all for the zero alcohol beers and I have tried the Corona one, it's great. His wife is Muslim so that has made it part of their lifestyle plus he " 'ad it very very large when working overseas mate" etc.)
It is established medical fact that no amount of alcohol is safe and I think if that is helping people make a conscious considered choice that is a good thing. Not if they are taking shitty filthy coke instead tho.
Ditto the PP's who raised the social media issue.
Too late for me however ! Hic 🫠

I am thinking it would be nice to have the extra cash. The wine I like is usually about £15 a bottle now (at home so say £45 out). Maybe I'll save it up and buy some nice shoes.

Great idea - you'll have a lovely, tangible reminder that drinking less can come with its benefits.

Galoop · 02/09/2024 06:19

Big drinking is very much a Western World thing, I'm not even sure it's a thing in the US. I think kids now don't have it engrained as part of their culture that you need to be drunk to have a good time. I also agree with PP, they seem more into drugs

ObliviousCoalmine · 02/09/2024 09:12

Because it's easier to get hold of weed, ketamine and mdma.

gannett · 02/09/2024 09:22

Pumpkinz · 01/09/2024 18:28

Drugs. Lots of young people now taking psychedelics (mdma, lsd, mushrooms) etc and either staying home watching the walls warp or going out and loving on everyone. No hangover the next day and much cheaper than buying drinks all night.

So much cheaper. Booze is ridiculously expensive in pubs and bars these days. If a large glass of wine had cost nine quid in the '00s I doubt I'd have drunk a quarter as much as I did. Drugs cost pretty much the same as they did back then and are much easier to get hold of these days.

Will never forget the first time I just did mdma on a night out with no booze. The lack of hangover the next day was astonishing.

I’m surprised at the number of posters who deny/disagree with the above.

I’m in my 30s and I’ve been going out for over 15 years. The shift towards drugs is VERY noticeable. When a single pint is £8 and a pill (the high from which lasts all night) costs £10, it’s not difficult to see why.

In Norway and Sweden, you can only buy alcohol in special shops, with limited opening hours. I think it's a great idea. You can still buy what you like, but it does encourage you to stop and think twice as it involves a special trip

Judecb · 02/09/2024 17:43

For the most part, they drink less than our generation because it's too expensive and they are better educated as to the potentially dangerous health side effects.

LostittoBostik · 02/09/2024 17:49

I'm with you @OptimismvsRealism - I really enjoy a drink. But I must admit I've lost my tolerance in my 40s. I have to eat LOADS to be able to drink now. Such a shame.

But I do find abstinence culture really boring. The lack of sex that young people are having is also quite damaging I think.

JerryHasSprungAgain · 02/09/2024 17:49

Costs the earth today, which is probably why - if you watched Boozed up Britain - groups of young people would get tanked up at home before going out. Now, it might be easier just not to drink - cost of taxis, having to have a designated driver etc
I remember a pint of Flowers costing 60p. The cheapest I could get a glass of wine for now would be in Wetherspoons for about £5-£6.

Agreed. They don't seem to seize the day any more.

It tastes rank, its expensive, you act like an idiot and get a banging headache the next day. I resent spending my far too little money on a drink I don't even enjoy and makes me act like a moron.

I find it interesting how so many people associate sex and alcohol with fun, and think that any other way of life is automatically boring or dull.
