To wonder why the young people don't enjoy drinking alcohol

I mean I know some people have always not really liked it but why as a generation do they feel differently about it?

(Come to mind because I've decided to go sober for a few weeks and it's NO FUN and I want to know their secret).

It's social media and the fear of being filmed.

Zanatdy · 01/09/2024 19:27

my two don’t drink much, my DS was 17 when he had his first drink at a family wedding in Poland. He started on the vodka! He’s at Uni now and admittedly has had a few boozy nights out where he’s vomited, but he’s been back since mid June and I’ve not seen him drunk one. He only drinks when he goes out (not even once a week) and he’s quite health conscious. DD (16.5) had her first taste of alcohol on the same day, age 14 (sparkling wine to toast, not vodka) and pulled a face and hadn’t had a drop since.

I was quite proud when DS said his girlfriend couldn’t believe he had never seen one of his parents drunk. Especially as I used to be quite a bad drunk back in my day. I hope none of my kids inherit that. My eldest son is 30 and he’s been teetotal 6yrs after admitting he was drinking too much. Very proud of him for giving up the drink. I enjoy an odd half a fruity cider or 1 G&T but I’d rather have a cuppa and early night these days.

The culture has changed so much since the 90s & 00s binge drinking culture, kids are stuck to screens in their warm comfortable homes rather than having to actually go out and see their friends, gigs and going out in general are way more expensive than they used to be and binge drinking just isn’t seen as cool any more.

SallyWD · 01/09/2024 19:30

I do find it a bit of a myth that young people don't drink. I work at a university, I live in a studenty area and I live near a famous pub crawl route. There are many young people that drink and get drunk.

Doodleflips · 01/09/2024 19:34

Find the Huberman lab podcast on drinking, I might help you.
Alcohol is shit and a poison, destroys gut health, and definitely messes with hormones.

timetodecide2345 · 01/09/2024 19:36

It's not young people it's 25- 30 somethings that have cut down on alcohol

It's expensive
It's unhealthy
It causes dementia long term
You become dependent
It's a depressive
They have responsibilities for children ( as the daughter of an alcoholic I hate seeing kids around drinkers and in pubs)

The list goes on

NeelyOHara1 · 01/09/2024 19:38

Not drinking alcohol is the new rebellion ;)?

Loonaandalf · 01/09/2024 19:38

I think newer generations are more health conscious so that could be it but also could they just be on drugs instead? It’s cheaper. Drinking is so expensive compared to what it used to be when I was a student.

FinallyYouSaid · 01/09/2024 19:42

When I was 16 18, I'd pay a tenner for entry to the most popular club in our area and it was all you could drink included in the entry price, from 8pm to 2am.

Eloratheexplorer · 01/09/2024 19:47

I think the fact that everything you do can end up on social media now may have something to do with it too. Suspect you can’t just be a drunk idiot anymore without someone taking a video of you and reminding you and the world of it the next day!

Zone2NorthLondon · 01/09/2024 19:09

That’s simply not true and quite pejorative
Not all youngsters are vapid vain IG hoping for big break

Not drinking doesn’t equate to love the nody as a temple

I don't think body purity correlates with being vapid or vain. I do think it's a cultural trend though - hence the no alcohol, no UPFs, gym from as young as teenagers, hydration.

Lourdes12 · 01/09/2024 19:51

I don't like the way alcohol makes me feel but I do like the taste of a mid white wine.`i will have a small amount with some crisps occasionally

Bogeyes · 01/09/2024 19:52

A lot of them prefer cocaine

Birdingbear · 01/09/2024 20:01

I can't understand why people want to drink. Toy end up feeling dizzy and sick and hungover the next day....it the ruins your day and the older you get the longer it takes to get over your drink session.
I think people nowadays have hobbies and other things that are more enjoyable. Drinking was popular when people had nothing else to do with their time.

It's not normal to end up sick and hungover!

Semantics are debatable maybe, but it's certainly common to end up with a hangover after having a drink! It's one of the difficulties with alcohol - one drink tends to beget another and so on...

ForeverPombear · 01/09/2024 20:18

I grew up with an alcoholic mother which really put me off then my ex became an alcoholic as well, out 5/6 nights a week with his mates having on average 8-10 pints.

I'm pretty bloody sick of the stuff tbh.

No I think that's a genetic thing. I can have one and it's perfect.

Care to elaborate?

It's obvious!!!

PuzzledParrott · 01/09/2024 20:37

Not everyone, but discussions on this topic do seem to assume that there is only a choice between either being teetotal or a being wasted, pathetic, drunken mess, throwing up in a gutter, and waking up on the bathroom floor. There is a happy medium.

lunaloo56 · 01/09/2024 20:38

My anxiety goes through the roof the day after cos I get steaming and talk shit to people also the hangovers are horrendous. I've not drank for 2 years and I'm mid 20's!

They’re just bullying and harassing people online instead which is just as damaging, really.

Doesn't cost the country billions, though.

How often does that happen? Compared with, say, every A&E on a Friday night.
