43 period is like I’m in labour

Timelessp · 01/09/2024 11:32

Ibuprofen and paracetamol not touching the sides I genuinely feel like I’m in labour with contractions (im 100% not pregnant unless im the Virgin Mary)
ia this normal for my age? Periods are becoming shorter and no steady flow
gone from a 32 day cycle to 27/28 days
I want to cry

I’m 44 and had something similar recently. Was literally screaming in pain and nearly passed out in the bath. Eventually subsided after I took a ton of painkillers.

Wondering if this is a pre-menopausal thing.

Obviously though monitor it and go to your doctor if you have any concerns, or if you have any other weird symptoms. Can’t hurt to get checked.

imeanwhy · 01/09/2024 11:45

Sounds like peri to me, it can go that way unfortunately... however I would get checked if it continues for more than a couple cycles, just for peace of mind

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 01/09/2024 11:45

Try to get a scan during one, that much pain sounds like endometriosis.

DavidRosesEyebrows · 01/09/2024 11:46

I had this too - a glass of wine really helped! Things have gone a bit haywire since I started peri🙄

Mynewnameis · 01/09/2024 11:46

I once had pain like that and it was appendicitis

BlueHeat · 01/09/2024 11:49

Ouch, sorry you’re suffering so much. I had pain like this and it turned out to be polyps. Could be worth having a scan at your gynae in case it’s something like that

FloofPaws · 01/09/2024 11:50

I've not had the pain because I've had the mirena coil since I was 40, but I wondered if it's a peri issue. Go and see the GP for advice and better pain killers
Also you can get a POAS to see if you're going through menopause

CitizenZ · 01/09/2024 11:51

Had this all the way through my 40's. Day two is the worst, pain meds don't touch it... Alcohol does though.

bigdinkydoodah · 01/09/2024 11:52

It sounds as if you could be peri, I went through a phase of extremely painful periods, then very heavy too. I had the Mirena coil fitted and it made such a difference.

That’s exactly how I feel I have a high pain threshold but iv been screaming in pain and doubled over this morning

I took 2 ibuprofen at 9.45 and then 2 paracetamol at 10.15 and I’m counting down to when I can take more

I started having horrendous period pain in my 40s. I felt like I was giving birth. TMI but I had huge clots too. I had the Mirena coil and it helped a lot. I’m on my third now.

I had several periods like this in my mid 40's, (I'd had periods like this in mu teens to) so I went back on the mini pill. No periods since thank goodness, GP said it was probably pre menopause.

She did suggest a coil but I've had issues with them in the past so didn't want to try one again.

rosesinmygarden · 01/09/2024 12:21

I had this and it was massive fibroids which my womb was trying to extrude. I used to have 4/5 week long periods.

I had an ablation which failed and then a hysterectomy.

I was 41/42 and ended up using my life savings to pay for treatment as the NHS did literally nothing meaningful. I was on a waiting list for 18 months then got a phone all where they tried to prescribe the pill (which my private consultant had already tried with no result). This was during covid though so maybe things have improved.

Ask for a scan. Pester. It's not normal to be that much in pain.

@Timelessp Pee On A Stick (POAS). @FloofPaws how would that tell you? Similar issues here.

How long did it take to feel a difference, both with pain and flow? I'm having one fitted in October at the same time as having a polyp removed

Gatecrashermum · 01/09/2024 12:28

Go to A&E. This isnt normal. They can give you stronger painkillers - you probably need a scan to exclude kidney stones.

It may be you have endometriosis- this might be a route to getting diagnosed (it's how i got a diagnosis)

RandomMess · 01/09/2024 12:33

Codeine to help you cope and yes medical sought.

MigGril · 01/09/2024 12:51

I should point out my GP also sent me for a scan to rule out any issues especially as I have had cysts removed in the past. So I would definitely get checked out before assuming it's just heavy periods.

I just bought mo e from Amazon. You do one on x day of your cycle and the other on y day of your cycle and it'll indicate hormones - I then went to see my GP who fitted a new coil prior to HRT (progesterone portion of the HRT - there are other options tho) and she said physiologically my cervix was changing too, joy!

MrTwatchester · 01/09/2024 12:56

I'm 42 and this exact thing has started happening to me in the past two years. I haven't had period pains since my teens, now all of a sudden I'm in agony—always just for a few hours, about two days into my period. It feels like contractions. My cycles have got shorter too, though the flow itself is light, except for the day or two after the atrocious pain, when it's medium. Never heavy though.

The only thing that touches the sides for the pain is co-codamol. I keep some in for that one day a month, and take it as soon as I feel the first twinge. I find I can ride it out that way, even if I am a bit high woozy.
