Not really an AIBU as I'm not the unreasonable one.

I didn't even try and get Oasis tickets yesterday, but I'm annoyed for those (including friends) who had an appalling experience with ticketmaster. It seems it was pre planned to kick people off, accuse of being bots when only one device being used etc.

What concerns me is the dynamic pricing. I know they've been subtly doing it for a long time, but if they can so publicly expose themselves to doing this with such a sought after tour, and get away with it, is this possibly the beginning of the end for big band tours?

Could the introduction of a new ticket system be possible do you think?

My husband (well me too on a different device and account) spent all day, finally got on at 3pm. Tickets were £489 by then and every time we clicked on some we never got through to checkout - they said they were unavailable. Eventually got kicked out of the queue for no reason.

I couldn’t understand why, afterwards, but Dh was so very upset (aside from being cross to have wasted a day binge watching Apple TV and monitoring the screen. Eventually he said it was because it was his BFF’s favourite band - he died of a brain tumour two years ago and Oasis was the background to their teens/twenties and Dh really wanted to see them, take the kids, and have a moment to feel close to his mate. Took him until this morning to come to terms with his disappointment, but he would have paid the ticket gouging prices to haver that… yet TicketMaster f*cked us over.

They need to find a way to do what they do for sporting events - all done by ballot. You are either allocated tickets on the first or later rounds, or you’re not.

I remember watching One Love and the commentator said ‘and now something really special’, for a second I thought ah it’s Oasis coming out. No, just Liam 😂

For me when Liam popped up it was a case of 'At last! Someone whose music I'm not too old to recognise' 😆

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 01/09/2024 12:52

It's similar to have seats on flights work

mothsandgoths · 01/09/2024 12:02

No one is forced to buy them. They sold out so someone must be happy to pay the price!

I saw them years ago. I paid £35 for my ticket and I was underwhelmed and I was a big fan. Liams voice was bad live and the crowd was horrible.

See I'd be worried about this as the whole thing already sounds so cynical. Will they really put the effort in to put on a show that's worth what people are being forced to pay? I think the American acts that do this certainly make sure the crowd get their money's worth. The Gallaghers have never appeared to give a toss and Liam's voice 30 years on might be worse. I'm not a fan of these kind of big shows anyway but imagine they are generally of a standard where you'd come away having been entertained even if you're not a fan of the artist. Can't see it with this. Being stuck in an Oasis stadium gig would be like a circle of hell for me 😂

Yes Pearl Jam tried to take on Ticketmaster in the 90s to keep prices down for fans and that seems incredibly quaint now. It clearly didn't work as they were using them for their last tour and tickets started at £180!

Spatchula · 01/09/2024 12:53

Bands aren't making money from music sales anymore because of streaming so need to get it from somewhere. What will eventually happen is only the super rich will see them.

Stick to your local venues, see the grass roots stuff for the price of a pint and a pie.

Demonhunter · 01/09/2024 12:57

Sethera · 01/09/2024 12:32

I do see that, but fans would have to be hugely, hugely naive not to foresee this happening.

I also get that any die-hard fans who supported them 30 years ago in the days they were unknown might now feel cheated if they now can't obtain tickets.

But this is not a fairness thing, the tickets are not awarded to the most loyal or deserving fans. It's a money thing, pure and simple. As a pp has mentioned, if Oasis had any interest in pleasing their fans, they'd have reunited for One Love Manchester.

Honestly, I think this reunion now rather than then has more to do with Noel's separation from his wife than anything else. Not saying I believe the rumours that she stopped it previously, but from what Noel has said, sounds like the separation is acrimonious so could be that he is doing it to fuel the speculation about that. Also I think he had to hand a big lot of his wealth over so he probably does want the money 😂

Imagine it happening, if like back in the day, you had to sit outside the venue ticket office and half way through they increased the prices. It just wouldn't happen.

It literally does happen, I had to get a hotel last minute when Eurostar trains got cancelled and as I was standing in the queue literally in the hotel, the price was going up and the people at the front desk were giving people different prices as the computer system changed because the demand was so high. The people in front of me paid less than I did, the people behind paid more. There's nothing you can do about it, all the nearby hotels were the same so I could either have gone completely out of the area (not knowing when I'd be called back or the train got rescheduled) or slept on the street.

It's the same reason Monty Python got back together - to fund their divorces.

Even if he had to hand over 90% of his wealth to his STBX, he'd still be in the top 1% of the country wealth wise!

sunseaandsoundingoff · 01/09/2024 13:00

Re your other comments, tech is more delicate than people think, and when things are forced to operate at incredibly large scale unexpected things can go wrong pretty easily. They did well to keep the site online for the majority with that many people on it at once. Plus there's also user error and that a fair number of people likely tried to get tickets using old devices or just had random phone/computer/internet issues. I wouldn't call it a big conspiracy theory.

Garlictest · 01/09/2024 13:01

"Dynamic" pricing's been around for ages, though. As a PP said, it's basically an auction ... then there are things like budget airlines and hotel rooms, where the price of the same ticket changes wildly according to how many places they've already sold and what demand they anticipate.

Even in everyday retail, we expect price reductions when supply exceeds demand. I've got a horrible feeling we might soon see prices dynamically increasing for high-demand fashion, electronics and so forth 😒 Online tech enables the calculations needed to milk the max from the customer.

I got three face value tickets for Murrayfield. Total cost including fees was £389.

Oh I know some people will have got them, but statistically because of my place in the queue I knew I didn't have a chance!

BlueEyedLeucy · 01/09/2024 13:03

Ultimately, the tickets will sell, regardless of the price, so there’s absolutely no incentive to have fixed prices. It’s a business. Not saying it’s good - I’m glad I’m not trying wrangle tickets like this - but it is what it is.

Sethera · 01/09/2024 13:05

Anyway, folks, every scammer in the known universe will be rubbing their hands in glee right now.

Watch out out for 'got 4 x standing tickets Oasis Heaton Park 12 July cannot use ... accept payment by bank transfer' posts popping up on every conceivable platform.

Hopefully if fans want the classic Oasis experience they’re not going in expecting huge production values, surprise guest guests Taylor Swift style. Although if fans turned up in lyric related costumes and started swapping bracelets that would be hilarious. And wind Noel off the clock 😂

CurrentHun · 01/09/2024 13:10

Oasis are an individually obnoxious Beatles tribute band, to my mind and I am really annoyed how much news coverage they have gathered day after day with this cash driven reformation.. but I do think this ticket pricing problem is a serious issue.

Culture and creative industries and music have always been a big export of the UK worldwide and we still pride ourselves on it. It shouldn’t be a once in a lifetime experience to go to see live music from an artist you like.
When music venues and pubs and clubs are closing in record numbers in this country meaning new bands will struggle more and more, we really need some legal input from government to allow live music to survive which means keeping it affordable.

godmum56 · 01/09/2024 13:20

baseline: If no one accepted it then it wouldn't happen. This is two middle aged men with dodgy hair not the Second Coming.

CranfordScones · 01/09/2024 13:41

People called 'fans' accord themselves a status beyond that of simply being paying customers. They'll put up with all manner of abuse which wouldn't be tollerated in any other service transaction.

The artists (and football clubs) are complicit in the abuse. But 'fans' almost want to be abused so they can virtue signal their fan status. To call yourself a true fan you must pass these seven ordeals - the first is: wait seven hours in a ticketmaster queue and suffer trial-by-bot where you're randomly expelled...

Find better people to support.

mothsandgoths · 01/09/2024 14:43

I dread to think the debt that some people have gotten into to buy those tickets!
For what to be half a mile back and watch on a big screen.

ThatAgileLimeCat · 01/09/2024 14:48

purpleme12 · 01/09/2024 11:58

Wow I never even knew this. I couldn't have afforded it either way so didn't try.
This is so wrong! Didn't even know they could do this

Wasn't a small rise either. General standing leapt from 150 to 350 a ticket, and became listed as "in demand standing".

Glad you got them, and yeah I hope they aren't a disappointment. I was a bit disappointed in '09 but don't agree with people about them being shit in the 90s (maybe I was just there on lucky nights) I hope they're back with the 90s attitude.

I knew the proper fans would get the title 😂 it's one of my favourites, most of my favourites are B sides tbh.
