DS (14) is banging on about wanting to go somewhere where the natural beauty is off the chart. We've been thinking about South America, but it is expensive. He loves green, rugged, lush splendour! I also think he needs stuff to do. He'll get bored with amazing views.

Thoughts? For next summer. Thanks

On a budget, recommend Eastern Slovakia. Fly to Kosice or Poprad and stay in the Tatra mountains. There's adventurous hiking, swimming lakes, water parks, amazing castles with dramatic views. Very few Brits go there unless they have a family connection, but there's lots to do and it's good for teens.

I second the Tatra mountains

Maine, Vermont and Newhampshire. Couple hour drive from Boston. You can be as remote as you want but still have relatively easy access to good restaurants, bars and shopping.

We loved Vancouver - Capilano and sea to sky highway up to whistler. Then did an Alaska cruise. Absolutely amazing.

I was going to say the Tatra mountains too, from the Polish side (my ex is Polish). We flew into Krakow which is great fun and so interesting for a night or two, then there were easy buses to Zacopane which is a beautiful little mountain town with a lot of activities and lovely scenery. I can't remember the details of the trek (that ex is - thankfully - long in the past!) but I recall mountains, forests, lakes and sleeping in little wood cabins along the way.”

Agree re Tatras - I’ve done both sides. Many, many moons ago but they were really beautiful. @Andoutcomethewolves - I suspect your visit included Morskie Oko, a lovely mountain lake.

Another vote for Slovenia! Absolutely beautiful, the whole country is so clean and safe too. Lake Bled is amazing but Lake Bohinj is unreal. We’ve been a few times in May & June and never found Bled too busy and Bohinj is very quiet, not touristy at all but still enough people around and places to eat/drink. I see a few people use Ljubljana as a base and get buses out to the lakes for day trips (the buses are great) but I wouldn’t recommend this, there’s lovely places to stay at both lakes!

Hoping to go back and see more of the country as there’s so many beautiful places - google Velika Planina too, this is on our list for next time Smile

Dolomites, so beautiful. We were there this summer and even my moaning DCs didn’t complain about the waking.

Norway, Sweden, Finland.

Also - not particularly green - but definitely fits the bill for natural beauty off the chart - Iceland.

Austria! So much to do and each mountain has different activities (we went to Zell am See). We saw a pair of Golden Eagles too. I would recommend it to anyone.
