DS (14) is banging on about wanting to go somewhere where the natural beauty is off the chart. We've been thinking about South America, but it is expensive. He loves green, rugged, lush splendour! I also think he needs stuff to do. He'll get bored with amazing views.

Thoughts? For next summer. Thanks

Sweden? More lakes than you can shake a stick at. Lots of lake swimming, sea swimming, kayaking, hiking etc.

Grenada, Caribbean x

Goodness, I came on here to recommend the Lake District, and perhaps the Scottish Highlands if you were willing to travel that far! I agree all those faraway places are also lovely!

A colleague went to the Swiss alps this summer - ski resorts out of season, so cheap for the level of luxury, but in the mountains, sounds beautiful in the summer.

rainforests, go east? Flights are expensive but cheap while you are there. (Thailand, Malaysia etc)

Germany would also be a good choice.

Costa Rica, lots of jungle adventure/ecology/wildlife things to do. Brazil similarly but not quite as safe as Costa Rica. Hawaii, but they’re not crazy about tourists at the moment. The Pacific Northwest (Washington/Oregon, you can be in or out of the cities) or western Canada.

StrawberrySwitch · 31/08/2024 22:33

Scotland or Wales? Much cheaper, supports UK economy and much lower carbon footprint.

On a budget, recommend Eastern Slovakia. Fly to Kosice or Poprad and stay in the Tatra mountains. There's adventurous hiking, swimming lakes, water parks, amazing castles with dramatic views. Very few Brits go there unless they have a family connection, but there's lots to do and it's good for teens.

I was going to say the Tatra mountains too, from the Polish side (my ex is Polish). We flew into Krakow which is great fun and so interesting for a night or two, then there were easy buses to Zacopane which is a beautiful little mountain town with a lot of activities and lovely scenery. I can't remember the details of the trek (that ex is - thankfully - long in the past!) but I recall mountains, forests, lakes and sleeping in little wood cabins along the way.

I haven't done the Slovakian side but my ex had and said it was just as good!

Alaska - just amazing

Assume PNW is similar - like real life virgin river- but not been

Crikeyalmighty · 31/08/2024 22:34

Sweden and the Stockholm archipelago are great for natural scenery- air you can taste and incredibly clear water

Bramble88 · 31/08/2024 22:36

Scotland, you will get some amazing views up in the highlands, nature at every turn. So much to see and explore

Swingsandslides · 31/08/2024 22:37

Another vote for Slovenia.

GripGetter · 31/08/2024 22:37

Have a look at Croatia. Plitvice National Park for example has waterfalls that run into waterfalls that run into waterfalls. The water is so clear, with loads of fish swimming near the edge of the boardwalks.

We loved Vancouver - Capilano and sea to sky highway up to whistler. Then did an Alaska cruise. Absolutely amazing.

Arcticlife · 31/08/2024 22:40

Lofoten in Northern Norway.

ShyTed · 31/08/2024 22:42

Croatia is stunning
lush, green, crystal clear waters

Phineyj · 31/08/2024 22:43

The Azores are even nicer than Madeira and less developed. We've just done a fab family adventure week there.

However, closer to home, we did a boat hire on the Caledonian Canal once and it was amazing (sleeper to Fort William).

Wow, thanks so much! I guess we all love thinking about holiday destinations 😂

We've done Bali, and lots of Asia. I am really drawn to either Columbia or Brazil, but I know it's a VERY expensive trip and big countries. We'll only have a couple of weeks...Madagascar was also suggested to us...

But Slovenia sounds great! I used to live in Prague for many years, so I've often thought about going back to some of the surrounding countries/countryside.

Norway also features on the list.

Please keep the suggestions coming

Norway - Arctic Circle = midnight sun too. PP suggested Lofoten Islands.

MrsMagoooo · 31/08/2024 23:21

Sri Lanka

Trek to the Annapurna Base Camp in Nepal. Amazing experience, beautiful mountains, and would give him a huge feeling of achievement. You just need to fly to Kathmandu, then on to Pokhara. And you can hire a guide there or make your way without one. Cheap food and accommodation, the main expense is the flights.

EasterIssland · 31/08/2024 23:22

Dolomites in North Italy. Stunning countryside. Can cross to Austria from there as well

Whatineed · 31/08/2024 23:26

Black forest Germany. Fly into Basel Airport and hire a car, or drive over, it's a pretty easy route.

Plenty of log cabins for rent, Lake Tittisee is a nice place for visiting and camping and you could even add time in for a trip to Europa Park on the way out or back.

JollyOldStNicholas · 31/08/2024 23:29

Go on a cruise to the Norwegian fjords. The majesty and beauty blew us away! It ticks every box!
