AIBU to believe that the cost of living crisis is a load of nonsense

So I wake up this morning to find that 14 million people are trying for Oasis tickets. A mediocre rock band and a “reunion” tour just to create a retirement fund for two already multi-millionaires.

The question is - where are so many people getting the money from to buy tickets? On one hand people moan about the “cost of living” but can easily find £500 to fund this nonsense.

Madness.

People should stop moaning about the cost of living if they can waste money on things like this. They are either getting too much income from their job/benefits (if they can afford this) to complain about “cost of living” or they should stop moaning about increasing food/fuel prices!

Rant over!

Let me guess OP - you voted Tory in July.

”Deserving and undeserving poor” - no wonder you’re not an Oasis fan. You don’t have a soft spot for 1960s nostalgia but rather the 1860s.

Oh, that's right.
If people are able to scrape together enough money to actually enjoy their lives for one event, that means there's no cost of living and people get too much in benefits etc etc, right? 🙄

Bore off and maybe stop being so ignorant maybe.

AncoraAmarena · 31/08/2024 10:14

'Rant over' tells me all I need to know about you, @MaryWils24

Sadly, it wasn't over!!

Frogspit · 31/08/2024 10:19

I'm trying to get to tickets, I'm not rich but can stretch to getting the tickets without going into debt for it. It's way more than I'd really like to pay, but Ive always loved oasis and never got to see them.
. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean everyone else who does, is someone who moans about cost of living.
I've never moaned about the cost of living. Why do you assume it's the same people moaning about cost of living, who are trying to buy tickets. There are many people affected by the cost of living and many rich who it doesn't affect. I'm in-between, like most of the people I know.
Why shouldn't we able to buy some tickets for a band we like?

ObelixtheGaul · 31/08/2024 10:19

Ponoka7 · 31/08/2024 09:45

Where did the £500 figure come from? I paid £149. You really struggle with critical thinking don't you? They aren't the same people. We have a right to question record profits while prices rise. People need things to look forward to. Which is why the birth rate rises in war situations.

I was wondering about that. Maybe there's special VIP tickets or something. Glad you managed to get tickets, hope you enjoy it.

Namechangejustincase24 · 31/08/2024 10:19

Wow some people live a sheltered life!

AnonymousBleep · 31/08/2024 10:20

FilthyforFirth · 31/08/2024 10:17

Ah I didnt realise the entire UK population was buying Oasis tickets. Makes sense why I can't get on ticketmaster now.

What a nonsensical post. Because a small proportion of the country are buying gig tickets, there is no COL crisis.

There are tens of millions of people not buying tickets, guess what? Some of those will be struggling with rising food, clothing and bill rises.

Because, whether you like it or not, the cost of food has increased to a point that people can't afford as much. That isn't opinion it is simply a fact.

Sorry, rant over. This post has really annoyed me!

I think that was the poster's real intention - to be really annoying. Surely nobody can actually be so stupid as to think that a small proportion of the population buying concert tickets somehow erases all the countless surveys and studies and verified evidence of the COL crisis?

rainingsnoring · 31/08/2024 10:20

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 10:17

@rainingsnoring Yes, credit. A took that has kept the poor impoverished for centuries now. As far back as the 1800’s families would live week-to-week and rely on the Pawn Shop to sell their Sunday Clothes to as to get money. They would then buy these clothes back from the Pawn Shop on payday each week (plus interest). A cycle that left many dependant and impoverished. The modern day equivalent are Credit Cards for many - as well as the high street Pawnshops.

At least this post shows some understanding!

Mynewsofa · 31/08/2024 10:20

What is it about MN and falacious arguments?

Two things can exist at the same time and not mean one thing isn't true.

Do you think a cost of living crisis only exists if everyone is living in poverty?

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 10:22

@Spectre8 Oh please, don’t try and lecture me on financial literacy. You forgot to say that you pay £300 a year for your BA Amex - and it takes at least 50,000-100,000 Avios to get somewhere in the peak, and you still have to pay taxes. But yes, go on collecting your points if it keeps you happy.

Like you, I use a credit card. Only for when I am overseas as to save on currency exchange fees. It is 12.9%APR (much less than AMEX) although I have never paid a penny in interest as I pay it off immediately.

OP posts:
Lovelyview · 31/08/2024 10:24

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 09:42

@AgnesX Yeah true. A lot of credit cards getting hammered today.

You have to wonder about some people’s financial stupidity. Happy to buy tickets they can’t afford (funding a millionaire’s retirement) yet will accrue interest on that same credit card when they can’t afford the repayments. And then moan about a cost of living.

I bet a lot of people who moan about the cost of living only have themselves blame through wasteful spending like this.

Generally, spending on experiences creates more happiness than spending on stuff. I don't spend what I can't afford on either but I don't think it's a waste of money to spend money going to see a band. I have no interest in Oasis and suspect their gigs will be a full on riot (in a bad way) but there are plenty of people who can afford the tickets.

Pandasandtigers · 31/08/2024 10:24

Your post is stupid, it’s crazy how people can post shit like this, it amazes me how some people just don’t get poverty. Of one person can afford something, then everyone can. What nonsense.

Demonhunter · 31/08/2024 10:25

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 09:39

Well it is true. If millions of people can buy tickets for Oasis then they can easily pay a bit more for their food and fuel without moaning.

Why should people not complain about the increasing costs of food and fuel when the cost increases have nothing to do with us! Joe public haven't caused this mess so why should we roll over and just say "oh well" so that conglomerates can keep their profits up!

If you want to be a obedient little sheep who asks no questions, you crack on. The rest of us will continue to question it.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 31/08/2024 10:25

So I wake up this morning to find that 14 million people are trying for Oasis tickets.

This right here is the bigger problem. Oasis sucks.

MintyNew · 31/08/2024 10:25

Come to Central London over a weekend or any day of the week and I'm inclined to agree OP.

PonyPatter44 · 31/08/2024 10:25

Mr Pony and I are very luckily not hugely affected by the CoL issue (small mortgage, well-paid jobs, low outgoings), but we're still angry about it, mainly because we're not self-obsessed twits. We both work at the sharp end, and see the human cost of societal neglect every day.

I wouldn't pay 50p to see Oasis, but I may have paid a LOT for tickets to the Proms and the Royal Opera House this summer. Just because I can afford that, doesn't mean other people aren't desperately trying to make ends meet.

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 31/08/2024 10:26

OP writes like this is a sociology coursework exercise/hobby horse.

I’m not sure if it’s GCSE or A Level.

samarrange · 31/08/2024 10:26

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 10:12

@AnonymousBleep I think Bosenquet’s categories of “deserving” and “undeserving” poor should be used more in present times - especially with scenarios like this. If people get in to debt buying these tickets then they only have themselves to blame.

And who should make that distinction, and apply the label "deserving" or "undeserving"?

Timeheals · 31/08/2024 10:26

What a weird link to make. COL has increased significantly more than wages - is this what you are disputing? If not, and that being the case, there will be huge numbers of people who can’t afford the basic living requirements despite being employed and working. This has no link to the popularity of a band. Just because you are frustrated - attacking a vulnerable section of society is an odd way to try and make a point

Mynewsofa · 31/08/2024 10:27

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 10:22

Oh, that's it then.

If you can afford to go abroad there is no COL crisis. Same with people buying Oasis tickets.

Is that what you meant?

Jumpingthruhoops · 31/08/2024 10:28

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 09:39

You sound insufferable

suburburban · 31/08/2024 10:31

I would have liked to go but wouldn't pay any more than £100 each ticket so tribute band for me.

People spend money on different things

anniegun · 31/08/2024 10:31

Not had someone be this much of an arsehole on here for a while

But you are completely right, why should us peasants be allowed to have any fun?

We should just work in our low paid jobs that make your life easier and keep quiet, be grateful that you allow us to serve you

I can't afford Oasis tickets, and I won't be buying any. Will you now permit me the honour of being able to complain about how much everything has become more expensive and, therefore, harder?
