AIBU to believe that the cost of living crisis is a load of nonsense

So I wake up this morning to find that 14 million people are trying for Oasis tickets. A mediocre rock band and a “reunion” tour just to create a retirement fund for two already multi-millionaires.

The question is - where are so many people getting the money from to buy tickets? On one hand people moan about the “cost of living” but can easily find £500 to fund this nonsense.

Madness.

People should stop moaning about the cost of living if they can waste money on things like this. They are either getting too much income from their job/benefits (if they can afford this) to complain about “cost of living” or they should stop moaning about increasing food/fuel prices!

Rant over!

Oh this explains a lot.

Thatcher is one of the reasons this country started on its downward spiral. A big reason.

Agreed. And in my opinion, that’s such a sad way to live, to not believe in society and just believe in individualism only. It must be sad to have that mindset that everyone is only in it for themselves.

Cinnamonkie · 31/08/2024 19:54

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 19:49

Well if I was Prime Minister I would recruit more professional carers (thus creating jobs) which will allow more people to continue in the workforce rather than being an unpaid carer. This will also bring economic benefits through reducing unemployment.

I take Thatcher’s view that there is no society, only individuals to the extreme.

You'd spend money recruiting carers, make parents go to work instead of caring for their ill and disabled offspring and lose money all round. That's a new level of low.
Ah thatcher, yes let's remember how loved she was and all strive to think like her 😂

I don't understand how anyone could have a satisfying relationship, build a family, make friends, be part of a good workforce if they truly believe it's about individualism only.

Well scrooge mcduck doesn't have kids and thinks her mum is a povvo for wanting oasis tickets so I don't think she does have a satisfying anything

Those who are ill or disabled receive extra help and support through the benefit system. People who “gave up” their career (whether to look after others or otherwise) did so voluntarily, and of their own free will. They would have been better off for themselves continuing to work, maintaining an income, and putting the care burden for their friend/relative on the state.

You've clearly never tried to get help for a disabled relative have you? I have friends whose children have complex needs. They had no choice but to give up work. Or do you really think they wanted to give up a well paid job for carers allowance, no holiday entitlement, no breaks, etc?

She does come across that way. Her only satisfaction seems to be that she's more financially savvy than anyone else, in the world ever. Except maybe Thatcher, who she learned at the foot of.

So, if you were PM instead of paying people £80 a week benefits to care for their relatives, you'd pay them a proper salary for it? Well, we may have disagreed up till now, but you've started to win me over now. Not sure you'll last long in the young Conservatives with that kind of talk though!

Good thing you’re not then. The country hasn’t got a spare £160 billion a year kicking around.

Well, she did win three general elections and has been the longest-serving Prime Minister in living memory so I wouldn’t exactly say she was universally unpopular.

I work in the "system" and know how woefully inadequate the support is for carers. The majority of carers simply have no choice but to give up work due to complete and utterly lack of resources there is.

The OP is posting some of the most vilest posts I've seen here in a long time.

I have saw it with my own eyes. People who ordinary complain about about the Cost of Living then suddenly are buying tickets for this.

I complain about the cost of living crisis all the time because I am annoyed at how we have ended up here and how everything is costing me so much more than it used to!! I still have disposable income though and am living fairly comfortably. It's not only ppl in poverty who are complaining about it, it is anyone affected. Apart from you apparently 🤷🏻‍♀️
You just sound a bit bitter tbh. How people spend their money is absolutely none of your business

She was good at winning elections, but she really messed up the country. What would you say are her main achievements?

Is this by the same maths as your "80% disagree but 20% is a significant number of people who agree?".

First past the post means that the majority of the country can vote against a party, but that party can still get into power. Doesn't make them popular.

Wideskye · 31/08/2024 20:14

I was helping out at a charity afternoon.
A group were all excited about getting tickets for Oasis. They were also moaning about the loss of their winter fuel allowance and drove off in their range rover.

FateReset · 31/08/2024 20:34

Maybe these people aren't struggling with costs of living. Or maybe they are yet make bad choices. Many people prioritise pleasure over essentials at times.

It has become almost fashionable to complain about cost of living, even if you are unaffected by it. I guess it's a way of joining in with a collective norm, to talk about expenses of food rising, of heating costs going up, to say you bought your new coat from vinted/charity shop rather than Seasalt!

Of course some people will be going into the red to afford things like concert tickets, cigarettes, takeaways, fancy holidays, designer trainers. Then falling back on friends, family, food banks and UC and claiming free school meals, tax credits, heating grants to ensure the family is warm and fed.

Imagine living in a damp, chilly, depressing, overcrowded council flat or temporary accommodation in a scary area not of your choosing. Who are we to judge?

I would like to think that some people will have taken my advice from here on board and will make better financial decisions for themselves.

I wouldn’t wish poverty or destitution on anyone. It just pains me to see that a lot of the poverty and destitution that exists in our society only does so out of poor and misinformed financial choices.

Conservatives are pretty good at looking after themselves, look at the contracts they grabbed in COVID I'm not sure I would want to be that financially astute to rip off the NHS and the population. Basically if you've got a lot the understanding that many don't have the basics seems hard for our politicians to accept they pass that down to their rich supporters who lap it up maybe to ease their conscience?

jannier · 31/08/2024 21:32

AntarcticOcean · 31/08/2024 18:45

@Cinnamonkie

Yes. Everyone. Every single person in the uk all moaned about being skint and are all now try desperately to get oasis tickets 😂

Not everyone obviously, but ‘friends’ (loose term) & plural, not one friend.. a few… I have on social media who definitely don’t have a lot of money have bought tickets. I guess some peoples skint is different to other people’s.

Yep like all those now skint from paying VAT on private education

jannier · 31/08/2024 21:39

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 19:33

Well surely it costs the state more for a parent to care for an ill relative or friend, in addition to the impact of that parent leaving the workforce (and missing out on development opportunities)? Not only will that parent be out of work and this reliant on benefits, they will also be claiming Carers Allowance over above this.

Having just watched my sister die after getting care workers who came in knowingly with flu and seeing them feed her cold uncooked porridge, raw ready meals, and attempt to get her up, wash and change her, give her meds( 3 hours late leaving her in pain) not returning to put her to bed or attempting it at 5pm ...I wouldn't leave a dog in these overworked undertrained, under supported hands. Have you experience of the care workers put in to nurse the ill? Let's not go into the overflowing catheter bags in hospital that went in noticed despite a 1 to 1 meaning she phoned at 3 am saying she was soaking and in pain....and still was when family arrived at 3.50 am.

AsburyPark · 31/08/2024 21:41

Are you allowed to just say “fuck off” or will that get me banned?

I bought Oasis tickets last night, and then I went to Tesco this morning and complained to myself that food costs seem to have gone up again. I’m allowed to spend my money how I see fit and I’m allowed to not be happy about the fact that food/utilities/fuel costs more now than last week/year/decade regardless of whether I can afford to absorb the costs while spending on other things or not.

With regards to it being a once in a lifetime event, for many it will be. It is for me even though I’ve seen them before. Even if I went to see them again in 2 years time if they put on more gigs. I will never again get to see Oasis play in their home town for the first time in over 15 years. The atmosphere will be electric and that CANNOT be replicated by ‘buying a second hand iPod and listening to a live recording’.

Let people fucking live.
