AIBU to believe that the cost of living crisis is a load of nonsense

So I wake up this morning to find that 14 million people are trying for Oasis tickets. A mediocre rock band and a “reunion” tour just to create a retirement fund for two already multi-millionaires.

The question is - where are so many people getting the money from to buy tickets? On one hand people moan about the “cost of living” but can easily find £500 to fund this nonsense.

Madness.

People should stop moaning about the cost of living if they can waste money on things like this. They are either getting too much income from their job/benefits (if they can afford this) to complain about “cost of living” or they should stop moaning about increasing food/fuel prices!

Rant over!

I know what you mean op. Everyone complains about being skint and then oasis announce a tour and at the drop of a hat people are spending £££100s on tickets. I couldn’t afford to. But I wouldn’t want to either.

Yes. Everyone. Every single person in the uk all moaned about being skint and are all now try desperately to get oasis tickets 😂

Not read all the pages (and pages) of comments but I’ve always said that when you look at the roads, you wouldn’t think there was a CoL crisis.

In the 80s and early 90s, everyone drove old cars. In fact, a newish car was such a rarity that we would point it out and ogle at it!
The majority of people went round in bangers.

Now nobody drives a banger. People drive cars that are relatively new. My car is over 20 years old and probably the oldest on the road by far.

As an oldie, I also had to put up with clapped out old bangers that usually needed a push start if it was cold lol 🙄

But, MOT’s etc were tightened up, and emissions controls came in - I can’t remember the last time I saw a rusty, clapped out car struggling along, sending smoke behind it.

Less choice nowadays.

It doesn’t really matter whether it is Taylor Swift, Oasis or whoever. My point is that it is a bit rich if the same people who constantly moan about a cost of living crisis suddenly find the funds for any event that it would be over in a couple of hours, where they could have spent their money on something that actually helps improve their long-term situation. When someone is complaining of a cost of living crisis, things like concerts would surely be second priority to survival.

The same principle applies to those who spend their income on luxuries over essentials in any instance if it means living beyond their means and building up long-term debt.

OP have you said anything to the people this thread is about? Clearly it’s someone you know who complains about being skint and then buys expensive tickets. And it’s irritated you.

Choochoo21 · 31/08/2024 17:54

YABU

Not everyone is affected by the cost of living crisis.

The people who couldn’t afford £500 before the COL crisis are the ones that are struggling the most now.

If someone is paying £500 for tickets then they’re obviously not struggling for money.

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 17:32

From what I have heard, many people who finance their cars sign a clause to say that they don’t actually own them and they are returned to the garage at the end of the contract for a rental period. So people are actually just renting cars!

It would surely make more sense financially in the long-run to swallow one’s pride and buy a good quality (maybe lower brand) second hand car outright.

Nope. It makes no sense at all to own a very expensive depreciating asset. If there's one thing you're wise to rent it's a car.

Hoardasauruskaren · 31/08/2024 17:55

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 10:04

I have saw it with my own eyes. People who ordinary complain about about the Cost of Living then suddenly are buying tickets for this.

I have the occasional moan about COL! My utility bill has doubled in the last few yrs & food prices have gone up a lot! I have a decent income & am not exactly struggling! Just not able to live the high life all the time like most people. Am I not allowed to comment on high inflation & fuel companies ripping off the public? Is it only those living hand to mouth who are allowed to complain?

Lease lease lease all the way - it’s been great for us!

Here you go. Yours is better @FatmanandKnobbin.

They are amazing.

I think the duck one is my favourite, but it's close.

BluebirdBoogie · 31/08/2024 17:57

I don't think I've ever come across anyone on Mumsnet who's such a total twat. I can't believe he/she/they are for real. Surely no one thinks like this any more?

Zizanna · 31/08/2024 17:57

I’d pay a lot of money NOT to go to this concert. 2 miserable brothers who had like 2 good songs decades ago.

If some people just swallowed their pride they would find that a well maintained second-hand car depreciates much less quickly than a brand new one, and without paying hundreds per month for something you don’t own. In fact the only reason cars depreciate so quickly is because of the substantial ongoing marketing pressure that comes from garages to get a new one every few years. Buying second hand, and one that is a few years old but still well maintained, will shield someone from a lot of the depreciation.

I don’t care one bit about Oasis, but my mum has been going on about it all week!

She can afford the tickets too - I just don’t understand the hype around them. From what I have read, so many people are buying tickets who normally would not look like they can afford them.

it just seems their priorities are in the wrong place .

A very high percentage of people who bought tickets today can afford them, the odd stupid person will have spent money they don't have to buy them - that absolutely does not mean that the COL crisis isn't real!

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 17:59

CostelloJones · 31/08/2024 17:55

Lease lease lease all the way - it’s been great for us!

How do you find it advantageous over just buying outright? It’s more expensive that way. Does the garage include some form of customer care with your lease agreement that is more convenient for you?

Well said. The cynic in me thinks they are only doing it to fund their retirement/divorce.

Tbh, they are quite predatory in creating such a high level of demand (allowing ticket prices to rise) yet not releasing enough dates to accommodate anywhere near that level of demand.

It’s like they just wanted to create a sense of hysteria around getting these tickets (now or never attitude) so demand and price can increase. Not really something I’d think was fair to their poorest fans, or respectful of their supposedly working class roots.

@Wordsmithery I always have. I’m fact I am a card-carrying member and have been for the last 10 years…

Didn’t they cause the cost of living crisis?

AllPrincessAnneshorses · 31/08/2024 18:07

Not only unreasonable, but really rather stupid.

We have more than enough to get by but aren't so wilfully blind as to fail to understand others are not so fortunate.

theduchessofspork · 31/08/2024 18:07

You are both wrong and dull

definitely not maybe a bad combination

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 31/08/2024 18:08

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 09:42

@AgnesX Yeah true. A lot of credit cards getting hammered today.

You have to wonder about some people’s financial stupidity. Happy to buy tickets they can’t afford (funding a millionaire’s retirement) yet will accrue interest on that same credit card when they can’t afford the repayments. And then moan about a cost of living.

I bet a lot of people who moan about the cost of living only have themselves blame through wasteful spending like this.

So, I haven't even tried to get tickets. Not particularly interested.

But is it "wasteful" spending to buy something that makes you happy? That gives you happy memories for later?

I know a few people who really enjoy going to see live music. They go without other things (that others probably really enjoy) to fund this. They save an amount each month to afford tickets.

That doesn't mean that they can't be outraged about the fact that food costs 50% more than it did previously. Or that their electric bills have sky rocketed. All of this means that the amount they have for "fun" things is less. Doesn't mean that they have to stop living their lives entirely.

Well it is true. If millions of people can buy tickets for Oasis then they can easily pay a bit more for their food and fuel without moaning.

Are Oasis selling Millions of tickets or is it 1.4 mill over 17 concerts against how many people are in the country and how many rouges are buying to sell on. Plus the people who will fly in and those buying to see more than once.....but crack on with the delusion that people struggling to afford housing and using food banks plus those worrying about heating through the winter will have a ticket.

jannier · 31/08/2024 18:11

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 09:46

I could afford the tickets (though I don’t want them obvs!), but it is from what I have read on Facebook this morning baffles me. People who complain about the cost of living all the time suddenly have found the money for this. Doesn’t make sense to me…

Show off give a donation to the food bank then.

GoldOnyx · 31/08/2024 18:11

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 18:09

No we didn’t.

How did they not cause it? It happened under Boris Johnson and Liz Truss. Boris Johnson mismanaged it and then Liz Truss worsened it by making poor financial decisions. I take it you’re referring to her in your post about people who cannot manage money well and make poor financial decisions?

midgetastic · 31/08/2024 18:11

So the tories didn't trigger brexit and they didn't leave the markets to sort out fuel prices and they didn't run the country to the knees .... funny I thought they were in government over the last 14 or so years
