AIBU to believe that the cost of living crisis is a load of nonsense

So I wake up this morning to find that 14 million people are trying for Oasis tickets. A mediocre rock band and a “reunion” tour just to create a retirement fund for two already multi-millionaires.

The question is - where are so many people getting the money from to buy tickets? On one hand people moan about the “cost of living” but can easily find £500 to fund this nonsense.

Madness.

People should stop moaning about the cost of living if they can waste money on things like this. They are either getting too much income from their job/benefits (if they can afford this) to complain about “cost of living” or they should stop moaning about increasing food/fuel prices!

Rant over!

Meanwhile, how about people (usually those with money and second homes) who gripe their fucking heads off about paying more tax when essential services are crumbling around us. Let's focus on that instead OP.

Chesspeece · 31/08/2024 14:14

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 09:39

Well it is true. If millions of people can buy tickets for Oasis then they can easily pay a bit more for their food and fuel without moaning.

But why should we??

housemaus · 31/08/2024 14:15

I mean thinking that energy companies and supermarkets shouldn't be price gouging people isn't related to how much money I can afford to spend on gig tickets (no, I don't have nor did I try to get Oasis tickets, before you ask).

Surely you can see that 'I am prepared to spend a chunk of money on a first-in-over-a-decade musical event for an influential band that lots of people really love' and 'everything is getting more expensive and yet the country seems to be no better off for the increase in council tax, the energy companies are making record profits etc which seems bad' are two views that can co-exist?

midgetastic · 31/08/2024 14:16

Is the OP really saying that all fun should be scrapped and we should just pay more for existing?

Didn't Cromwell try that ? Banned Christmas as part of it ?

Only that poor people should have their fun scrapped. Rich people can continue to fly abroad like she does.

midgetastic · 31/08/2024 14:19

And you can only have poor or rich people on society ? No middle ?

No idea, they are entirely nuts. But dangerously so.

Gummybear23 · 31/08/2024 14:21

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 09:42

@AgnesX Yeah true. A lot of credit cards getting hammered today.

You have to wonder about some people’s financial stupidity. Happy to buy tickets they can’t afford (funding a millionaire’s retirement) yet will accrue interest on that same credit card when they can’t afford the repayments. And then moan about a cost of living.

I bet a lot of people who moan about the cost of living only have themselves blame through wasteful spending like this.

You can bet all you like.
However, sometimes ill health and bad luck like redundancy could put someone into terrible financial positions.
Life can take twists and turns which can leave people in situations that are no fault of their own.

You obviously and luckily have never experienced this or know anyone who has.

Lucky you.

Gummybear23 · 31/08/2024 14:24

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 09:52

I don’t care one bit about Oasis, but my mum has been going on about it all week!

She can afford the tickets too - I just don’t understand the hype around them. From what I have read, so many people are buying tickets who normally would not look like they can afford them.

it just seems their priorities are in the wrong place .

How can you tell whether they can afford or not by 'looking at them'.
Judgemental person that you are.

Wordsmithery · 31/08/2024 14:26

Steady, OP. You'll be voting Tory next.

5128gap · 31/08/2024 14:32

MaryWils24 · 31/08/2024 13:48

@5128gap To a point giving housing benefit as a lump payment that the Claimant took responsibility for was a good idea in principle through helping developing budgeting skills. However, for those that really can’t manage budgeting and make poor choices, the higher costs of the state issuing vouchers or prepaid cards would be a good investment as it would protect them.

No. The costs would be hugely prohibitive. It would be a ridiculous financial decision, which would not achieve the control you seek, as people would simply sell the vouchers to buy what they wanted. This is why no government has introduced it, regardless of how closely their views on 'the poor' align with your own. The vulnerable are not protected by the removal of their autonomy. All that creates is a sub section of society who are never permitted to participate financially. They gain no skills they pass none on to their children and the cycle of deprivation continues.

thefamous5 · 31/08/2024 14:34

I'm no oasis fan but seriously, even those who are struggling with the COL are entitled to spend money on something that will bring them joy once in a while.

My brother is waiting for tickets. He's not directly impacted by the cost of living but he's entitled to moan if/when bills go up and his income doesn't.

I'm not waiting for tickets and I am directly impacted by COL. I don't piss on the chips of people who want a treat!

Finally got through but only tickets left were £409 each so a bit over our budget - so that’s 4 hours of my life wasted 🤣😭

Wow, that's shocking! Been following the drama ob Twitter and it all seems very stressful and disorganised. God only knows what they will be going for as the dates approach next year. I know that there are meant to be safeguards to stop profit resales but ticket touts always find away.

@FatmanandKnobbin How much did you pay for those tickets? You sound like one of those many people I am acquainted with (many old classmates) who need to reevaluate their life priorities.

Instead of spending that money on tickets, why don’t you use it to invest in yourself. Use it to learn a skill - or a new language, or anything - to make yourself more employable. In the long term it will pay off by increasing your income - much more so than spending two hours in a field queuing up for the nearest portaloo.

Not necessarily.
We can’t all go the highly qualified, well paid jobs anyway.
Who will empty your bin?
Clean the office you use?
Repair the road you drive on?

There are loads of jobs that society needs that don’t pay well (loads of them were the essential workers in the pandemic. It wasn’t the asset managers who were considered essential and had to go into work, was it? They were furloughed. For some reason the essential jobs seem to be those far less well paid…) I digress.

In saying the answer is for someone to just get better qualifications and a better paid job you overlook that binmen, for example, need to exist. Should people like that not be allowed to have any fun? Why not? Because if they all got better jobs you’d sure as hell notice a dip in the quality of your life.

As an aside, can’t believe you are ranting about people wasting money on Oasid but you wasted it on Taylor Swift. You lost any moral high ground right there.

Labour are going to destroy aspiration.

The Tories actually did destroy the economy, the NHS, the state schooling system, our membership in the largest trading block in the world, import/exports, the police service, our fairly low crime rate, the social and financial safety nets, social mobility, our waterways and beaches..

Says the person who went to Taylor swift and I’d guarantee isn’t rich.

midgetastic · 31/08/2024 14:46

Why is investing in a skill to become more employable morally better than spending your own money on making your life happier ?

Isn't that arse about tit ?

It sounds like you’re salty that she’s spending her own money on what she wants.

Is there nothing in life that you’d be prepared to spend a few hundred pounds on? A weekend away, tickets for an important sporting event, a new iPhone…? Everyone has their own thing. Oasis are obviously your mum’s thing. You are not the guardian of her priorities. You’ll have your own.
