Why is 'Oasis warn against ticket resale' on BBC News, yet the Taliban banning women from TALKING outside, no?

FloordrobeIsGoingToGetME · 31/08/2024 08:19

unless I've missed it?

BBC News, BBC Breakfast has had several segments dedicated to how to get Oasis tickets, on sale launched, warnings against resale.

In fact the BBC 1 current show has had at least 10 minutes dedicated to it right now.

Yet this absolute horror that women in Afghanistan are living, the erosion of their human rights, has not even attracted a minute of coverage?

www.theguardian.com/global-development/article/2024/aug/26/taliban-bar-on-afghan-women-speaking-in-public-un-afghanistan

Does anyone have insight into the reason for the press blackout - it is really just apathy or is there more to it?

And if like me, you care about this, is there anything that can be done to stand up for human rights here?

Maybe because it's UK news, Oasis is massive news right now here.

Mynewsofa · 31/08/2024 08:33

I just googled and there are numerous articles online about this. I can't see there is a press blackout?

Theleaveswillbefalling · 31/08/2024 08:34

They have already covered the Taliban story last week. What else is there they can say about it?

Aishah231 · 31/08/2024 08:34

You know the answer to this OP. We all do. Oasis is a useful distraction. Reminding us about the Taliban might make some question our current and future foreign policy decisions. How much good have we actually done in Afghanistan or Iraq or Syria. How much good will we actually do in Ukraine? If we're not prepared to see things through we shouldn't provoke or elongate conflict. We have a history or spending lots of money and leaving things worse than we found them. Oh and of course they just don't care very much about Muslim women.

araiwa · 31/08/2024 08:35

It was in the news when it happened

Nuggetnuggety · 31/08/2024 08:36

Oasis tickets are the bigger story? People want to get tickets.

DavidBeckhamsrightfoot · 31/08/2024 08:39

Because its not surprising.
Pretty bog standard for the taliban.

Oasis is actually current and surprising news. So the contunution of the story us expected.

I haven't seen any tv BBC news about it?

Because a large number of people in the UK are more interested in Oasis tickets than the treatment of women by the Taliban. Plus not all news has to be depressing.

Trainstrike · 31/08/2024 08:44

I think OPs point may be more around the BBC's breaking news. BBC News alerts do often seem to focus on completely random "breaking" news. News alerts always used to be more around shocking crimes, manhunts, countries at war, surprising deaths etc. Now the BBC ones seem to be information I have zero interest in or don't find to be "breaking" at all.

This sums it up.

A friend commented once that you can post about DV/abuse/coercive control on social media and not get a single interaction, yet post a picture of your pet and you get a lot. People are all doing the best they can in life in challenging times, they just want light relief. Oasis right now are light relief

Fragglerock75 · 31/08/2024 08:46

I hear you! I mean I quite like Oasis but why does there need to be saturation media coverage - as soon as the news came out you just knew that it would be across everything and it is. I really care about the women in Afghanistan - have written to the foreign office about it as I don’t know if any aid money goes from the UK to the Taliban. I think it’s good to care about stuff that’s happening in other countries.

Billyandharry · 31/08/2024 08:49

Very good question OP. Possibly because the world has gone completely mad?

This is my take on it.

So many people are invested in Oasis which is highly relevant to them, and clearly big entertainment news.

It feels like there is still plenty of room for other important stories.

I only learned about it on MN!

Because clicks/traffic/revenue.

It’s also more joyful than Taliban being the Taliban.

Baital · 31/08/2024 08:55

Dog bites man (or woman) - not news, because not unusual. Man/woman bites dog - news, because unusual.

Taliban treat women badly - not unusual. It was reported, but has not remained in the news because (sadly) fairly predictable.

GoldenSunflowers · 31/08/2024 08:56

My teenage DDs talked about the women in Afghanistan last week, or at the time the news came out. They get their news from other than BBC sources. It was in the Guardian.

Oasis tickets news is a bit of a filler for the papers and social media.

Mynewsofa · 31/08/2024 08:56

FloordrobeIsGoingToGetME · 31/08/2024 08:42

I haven't seen any tv BBC news about it?

So you didn't really mean 'press blackout' then?

You meant, why isn't the BBC talking about it?

They're different things.

Solonga · 31/08/2024 08:56

Because the media wants to keep the Oasis hype going, more clicks

LlynTegid · 31/08/2024 08:57

UK news takes much more precedence. If you want to find out more about news outside the UK, then the BBC World Service news is available.

Solonga · 31/08/2024 08:58

There will be another day or two of it then it might shut up until the concerts next year, just a repeat of Taylor Swift really.

CranfordScones · 31/08/2024 09:05

High frequency news cycle. It doesn't inform you about anything worth knowing.

People should stop looking at the regular news, and look more broadly and deeply. Don't assume that watching the news informs you about anything useful. It doesn't.

Justcallmebebes · 31/08/2024 09:07

Because covering it will bring attention to the utter shambles and betrayal of the US government in abandoning Afghanistan as it did and we can't have that
