UK teenagers are awful

I live between two villages in the UK. Both have playgrounds aimed at under tens. Both are frequently trashed. Broken bottles left there overnight, stuff sprayed over the equipment. This has been particularly bad over the summer holidays. Currently in Germany. Loads of playgrounds, toys are left there anyone can use them. Nothing is vandalised. Why are things so bad in the UK? And before I get asked neither the UK venue or German one have any areas aimed at teenagers. But somehow the German ones don’t wreck their surroundings.

Lack of parenting and discipline and the whole "let them do what they want" attitude

How do you know it's teens doing it?

Her prejudice has reliably informed her.

My teens were delightful. All their friends were absolutely lovely young people. And they still are now they are at university. Men and women. Apparently your teens were great too. So why stereotype?

I detest the low bar we have for teenagers in this country. We allow them to misbehave and we just roll our eyes and say they’re just being teens. I come from a culture where this isn’t the case and teenagers are very much part of normal family life until they leave home.

The negative stereotypes in this country really do not help.

I’m in a town that if it ever comes up on here is cited as a crime ridden shit hole. I have two big parks less that 2 minutes walk from my house. Both have play areas. Neither of them are ever vandalised. We do have a play area just for older children, perhaps that makes a difference.

I agree. I lived in Turkey for some years and this just doesn't happen - people would be appalled.

Shops are even able to leave some of their stock outside overnight and no-one nicks it. There is never any rioting that descends into looting and trashing stuff either.

There is a particular 'me first' and 'I'm alright Jack' culture here in Britain and a bitter undertone that I only noticed when I returned - when you live here all your life you have no other experience to compare so you think it's the same worldwide.

This right here. You just don’t have bitter undertones in other countries.

Really?

None of the other approximately 200 nations on earth have 'bitter undertones', whatever they are?

Only Britain?

I was in Sweden 20 years ago, visited a cemetery which had a river running alongside it. Large glass and metal lantern as a memorial was placed above the river, garden tools in racks, vases for flowers stacked alongside. Nothing broken, stolen or damaged ever we were told. A nearby lake, popular with swimmers, had an open kitchen with a microwave and kitchen utensils, crockery in a wall cupboard. Again told nothing was ever stolen or damaged. Churches with silver and pewter unlocked.
Talking to a group of 19-23 year olds we said how in the UK the memorial could well end up in the river, the tools and utensils stolen or smashed they were horrified that anyone would do that.
I think Britain has long had a mob culture amongst young people, maybe not so much in other countries?

( and not all teens are vandals obviously— just been told today about a 13 year old saved another child’s life by his quick thinking. I’m sure we all know teens who are caring and responsible)

Not one. Just Britain. I’m kidding of course

What facilities are there for teens in your area? If it’s all for under 10s maybe you should petition for things to keep the teens busy.

There is a youth centre in one of the villages which runs after school events for different age groups. And a football club. And a netball club. And a tennis club. But not a lot of you don't like sport I suppose

@SlothOnARope a lot of teens local to me would be annoyed if adults trash the local playparks - because believe it or not they actually go there to play. Yes teens do still play.
There is a park near me that after school the local secondary school kids (so technically some are still pre teens but I'm talking about ages up to 15 or) go to. They go on those bucket swings, used the skateboard ramps, kick a ball around and use the exercise equipment.
The vast majority aren't going to grow up and suddenly start trashing stuff (it's a mystery why some people do though).

I agree - it's the mysterious but constantly-growing minority of AS adults and people with absolutely no respect for anyone.

I dgaf who they are or how old they are, I just want them to stop or be stopped, because it's not under control any more. There are no consequences and the "community" has gone to shit. People are too scared to talk to each other.

Stompythedinosaur · 31/08/2024 18:38

I think that's a horrible, ageist view.

Do you imagine that a group of perfectly lovely children, suddenly become horrible for the teenage years and then return to being nice as soon as they are adults. Surely you can see that's rubbish?

I work with teens, they are fun and lively.
