UK teenagers are awful

Fedupwithteenagers24 · 30/08/2024 20:38

I live between two villages in the UK. Both have playgrounds aimed at under tens. Both are frequently trashed. Broken bottles left there overnight, stuff sprayed over the equipment. This has been particularly bad over the summer holidays. Currently in Germany. Loads of playgrounds, toys are left there anyone can use them. Nothing is vandalised. Why are things so bad in the UK? And before I get asked neither the UK venue or German one have any areas aimed at teenagers. But somehow the German ones don’t wreck their surroundings.

It’s the truth though. The UK really is a dump compared with many other European countries. All have their faults of course, but virtually everything about the UK is substandard or worse.

Fedupwithteenagers24 · 30/08/2024 20:45

I sort of agree with you both

If it was just one playground in uk I would think just a bad group alas and they will grow up, but it's both villages.

And my working life was spent with teenagers. They were , by and large, funny inventive and great to be around. But they are dreadful in groups. Absolutely awful

Maybe as villages there is nothing for them to do and no transport boredom always causes issues. Of course nobody wants to set up a youth club.

Last time I went to Zurich it was awful

I also work with young people and am frequently amazed by their resilience, knowledge, kindness and politeness. On paper many of them are challenging, in person many of them are often amazing, just requiring support and someone to give them a chance. This week alone I have had three young people send me messages of their success and all of them saying thank you. Please do not tar everyone with the same brush.

That’s 1 city in 1 country.

Blueybanditbingochilli · 30/08/2024 21:17

The teens round here split into 2 groups really. Nice polite kids, getting on with life. Or North Face clad terrors who blow vape smoke everywhere, say ‘fuck’ every other word, and generally seem to be doing nothing with their lives. Sadly group number 2 is a lot bigger.

You clearly never lived in the actual residential non expat parts of Spain and Greece then 🤣

What is very good about the UK?

TuVuoiFaLamericano · 30/08/2024 21:19

I'm a Brit living in Germany and get what you're saying 100%. The majority of teenagers here are very different, more mature, don't yell things at you in the street or intimidate people. I don't feel scared walking past a group of teens here.

longdistanceclaraclara · 30/08/2024 21:19

Teenagers and villages aren't really a good mix. Nothing for them to do. Not excusing the behaviour at all but I'm in SE London and we don't have this problem, presumably because there is more for them to do.

I grew up in a very small village. We drank MD 20/20 and smoked in the park but didn't trash anything.

I think that's probably the truth. And sadly turning group two into group one doesn't seem to happen.

But it should

@Blueybanditbingochilli yes but going by what the OP has said she is comparing 2 villages in England vs a small area of Bavaria.
I live in South London (oh the horror 😱). Our playparks don't get smashed up by "teens" (or even adults).

Agapornis · 30/08/2024 21:21

In my experience of working in parks, drunken vandalism is not restricted to teenagers. Round here it's mostly men, mostly in their 20-40s, mostly a combo drug & alcohol addiction, homelessness, and probably a long list of ACEs. Don't blame teens unless you see them do it.

Germany isn't all that nice either, see: AfD. It's not all Laptops und Lederhosen und Spielplätze.

Neither does the play park at the back of me in the really quite deprived area of my Northwest town.

thereiscustardinthejamtart · 30/08/2024 21:26

I think it is very dependent on where you live, but also that you seem to have been very unlucky.

The teens here are bloody lovely! Thinking locally, it’s sort of a mixture of expanded villages all merged together, old mining villages and mill towns. Two are a bit upmarket, 4 are quite “working class”.

No major problem with the teens in any of them. I’m sure a few are objectionable, the same as any other demographic, but we certainly don’t have gangs roaming the streets and vandalising things. You are more likely to get a smile and a “good morning” than have to cross the street to get away.
