Would you swap seats in a cinema if empty

Ttcagainnow · 30/08/2024 10:04

Say you booked the cheapest seat in the cinema but when there it's pretty much empty, would you seat in a VIP seat?

YABU - no, stick to the normal seat that you paid for.

YANBU - yes, go for it.

No I did it once years ago and not course they showed up and I was in their seats was mortified

LlynTegid · 30/08/2024 12:21

I wouldn't because I am choosy about where I sit, if I have the option.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 30/08/2024 12:56

No, because I'd have booked the seat I wanted online.

I don't care about a VIP seat. I care about the distance to the screen, how centered it is etc.

TheClawDecides · 30/08/2024 13:05

Staff really have better things to do than check who's sitting where, in an almost empty cinema.

Maddy70 · 30/08/2024 13:05

Yes

HunterHearstHelmsley · 30/08/2024 13:10

I'd feel really cheap doing this. It makes me cringe!

Local Odeon is £6.15 in the week and £8.35 at the weekend for a standard ticket. Premium is £1 more. It's hardly breaking the bank.

JMSA · 30/08/2024 13:59

Yes, totally! But definitely not at the start of the film.

Singleandproud · 30/08/2024 14:02

DD and I were the only ones in the screening of rotten Romans the horrible Histories film so we did move to VIP, I wouldn't have if there were other people with me unless it was right next to me and I just had to scooch over.

Our local cinema has only recently moved to alloted seats, I much preferred just turning up and picking a seat

LynetteScavo · 30/08/2024 17:49

I probably wouldn't bother at the cinema. I've done it at the theatre just after lockdown when there were loads of empty seats - I just moved along the row to get a better view. At the RSC ushers do seat people in better seats if they're empty and close by.

At Wembley a woman came and sat/danced next to me as the seat on the end of the row was empty- I think she had a seat far away from the stage and left the people she was with for a better view Grin

Ttcagainnow · 31/08/2024 00:06

I can confirm I was 1 of 3 people in the entire screen but I did stick to my assigned seat as it wasn't too uncomfortable!
I can't believe there are cinemas with enough staff to do checks 😂 my local vue certainly doesn't have enough. @Hunter its double the price at my local!

Of course, anyone who doesn’t thing you should needs to take a ‘don’t be a total freaking doormat’ course

Milsonophonia · 31/08/2024 00:15

Yes and I have done and not given it a second thought!

SummerSplashing · 31/08/2024 00:20

No. I'm not a doormat, but I also don't take things I haven't paid for.

if the cinema looked busy but not many booked in that area I'd be willing to pay more to upgrade, I still don't choose to be near lots of strangers who might have Covid.

not admitting anything, but in an empty one or almost, then in theory one could sit in a premium seat @Ttcagainnow

@Milsonophonia

yes, still.

so take you 'wow' & stow it.

i have underlying health conditions, live alone & there still a lot of covid around. It's still making people incredibly unwell.

i do what I can to stay well & to avoid it.

your problem with that??

paradisecircus · 31/08/2024 06:21

I'd move seats in an empty cinema but probably not to the VIP seats (whatever they are) as I imagine you get moved out of them.

Wheelz46 · 31/08/2024 06:47

I didn't even know VIP seats existed in cinemas.

I booked tickets for a film once for me and my 2 children, with limited seats left. The only one that had 3 together were up front, I hadn't realised the seats were practically a bed that were unadjustable.

15 minutes into the film, I noticed the still 2 unbooked seats still available, so we moved over to there and I shared a seat with my youngest.

Thankfully nobody booked it in between but all seats are the same price in our cinemas and are unbelievably comfy anyway, apart from the first row where you have to lay in a sleeping position to watch the film.

MinnieMountain · 31/08/2024 06:50

Not off my own back, but the usher in a near-empty cinema in Germany told me I could.

Musiclover234 · 31/08/2024 06:54

The odeon near me doesn’t have premier seating anymore, it’s a bit old and tired but you can book tickets £5 if you book online. Screens are roomy mostly so if you book a day or two in advance you can get decent seats anyway.

HelenWheels · 31/08/2024 07:04

i am not sure if some seats are more expensive than others
feels a bit cheeky
what would you do if you saw other people doign t his?

Chester23 · 31/08/2024 07:05

I think it depends what cinema you're in. In the Vue where I live (not been for years) they tell people to move if they sit in vip seats. But if the film has started and no one is there try it

MagpiePi · 31/08/2024 07:07

I was advised by a ticket seller to buy a cheap ticket and then sit where I wanted but it wasn’t a full screening. I wouldn’t do it if it was full.

Bubblesallaround · 31/08/2024 07:07

Yes but I went the other day for the first time in 8 years with my kids and there were only two others in the whole screening. Didn’t think twice to move to the more central, comfortable VIP seats! (Vue cinema)

Hohofortherobbers · 31/08/2024 08:01

Yes. I did this when I went to see the last Bond film, seat owners arrived 45mins into the film (who does that???!!) and I had to do the walk of shame back to the cheap seats, disturbing more people and fumbling around in the dark Blush
