I’m glad they’re safe but £2.5k on a wedding dress?

Well I know I’m probably being a cow and what a horrific fire in London. I feel so very sad for people who have lost so much.

These guys do appear in shock but still £2.5k on a wedding dress and loans for a wedding? Wtaf why do people do this?

“Well I know I’m probably being a cow”…. You forgot to add judgemental in that sentence!
They have lost everything and your concern is the cost of the wedding dress? Yes it’s a lot of money but it’s what a lot of people spend these days.

LonelyInDville · 27/08/2024 21:53

2.5K isn't really much for a wedding dress. I say as long as people don't go into debt who cares how much they spend. However in this case if I lost everything I wouldn't expect to pay that amount again, I would find something less expensive, especially if I'm hinting around for financial assistance to pay for my wedding. Honestly in their situation I'd buy a cute white dress and go to the courthouse and be done with it. But I'm cheap. 😂

You sound like a very bitter person

BlingaRinga · 27/08/2024 22:01

If you’re in search of something to be outraged about, have a listen to this series about Grenfell and the people complicit in allowing so many homes like these to become fire traps. Maybe more scandalous than spending £2.5k on a wedding dress?

If people have a pretty tough life, then it can be really even more important to them to buy the perfect dress that they get to feel like a princess in for one day. I spent less than £300 on my dress but I've always been given all the clothes I needed by parents and now I can buy whatever I need. (Not rich, just always been comfortable and not in debt.) Why do you lag the compassion, empathy and perspective to see that other people's approach to spending money on dresses might be different from yours for a multitude of reasons?

And I'm just talking about the dress, here, not even touching on your much wider lack of empathy for what they've been through.

Gifgaf · 27/08/2024 22:03

I know 2 people who paid £15k/ £21k for theirs because they married into wealth. It's insane!!!

BurbageBrook · 27/08/2024 22:05

Lack not lag.

violetsparkle · 27/08/2024 22:06

They've just been through something horrific and you want to judge how much they spent on their wedding and not only that you want others on the internet to join in?

Yes this!!

Even if they are insured they aren’t going to get it resolved in time for wedding. I hope the community rally around and support this couple so their wedding day can go ahead.

brightyellowflower · 27/08/2024 21:46

Well presumably if you're in the league of spending £2,5k on a dress you will wear once, you've done that after paying for house contents insurance and things that are actually important.

Congrats on being so smug and condescending about people who have just lost everything in a fire. Bravo you.

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 27/08/2024 22:09

I think that is a lot to spend on a wedding dress, quite honestly. But this really is an ill-thought out thread @AlcoholicDad82 . I think you should ask Mumsnet to delete it. It's in very, very poor taste.

Enko · 27/08/2024 22:10

My dd is getting married next year and £2.5k is low end of wedding dress budget. We looked at 4 wedding dresses 1 didn't start until £3 another didn't start until £5. We live in SE ..

People spend what they wish to for what they see as their ideal day. For me the 2nd hand dress with 2 witnesses I didn't know wouldn't be what I would want. Nor would I want a huge extravaganza like the Ambani wedding. But I accept that's the ideal for others.

violetsparkle · 27/08/2024 22:11

Hopefully they'll still be able to get married. They would have done the ID check bit already presumably? And if the venue is booked and all paid for they can turn up and get married. I really hope they still get married if that's what they want they've been through something horrendous.

PerkyMintDeer · 27/08/2024 22:16

I had a small wedding so didn’t spend a lot at all on my dress but 2.5k doesn’t go all that far these days when it comes to Wedding Dresses. You’re a bit out of touch if you think it is unusually expensive. Most of my friends who married in the last 10 years paid between £1.5 and £3.5k for their dresses. £2k being the average. Normal jobs…teachers, payroll, nurses etc. There’s only me and one other friend who paid under £1k. Don’t judge others for doing life differently to you.

Ellie56 · 27/08/2024 22:20

The headline focuses on the wrong thing entirely. It should be about the number of fire safety issues.

It is disgraceful that 7 years after Grenfell, lessons have still not been learned.

Juliet194 · 27/08/2024 22:22

Cute dog in the video.

Wittyapple · 27/08/2024 22:26

They were planning their dream day.
They also appreciated that they got out of there alive, even if all they have are each other and their dog.
They’ve been through an ordeal so surely it’s not the time to judge what they spend their money on.

TwitchyJerk · 27/08/2024 22:30

In the video they seemed more upset about their passports burning so they won't be able to get home to get married- don't think they even mentioned the cost of the dress. It is really sad for them.

Thistooshallpass24 · 27/08/2024 22:42

As a heads up if you feel this thread is in poor taste you can report it.
Honestly this thread is disgraceful .

Gingerkittykat · 27/08/2024 23:29

I'm wondering why a woman losing a wedding dress is headline news on the BBC? It's news is so dumbed down these days.

Thistooshallpass24 · 27/08/2024 23:41

It's like when something terrible happens to someone and the daily mail puts how much their house is worth in the first sentence
It's irrelevant

brightdazzling · 27/08/2024 23:52

This is just such a mean spirited thread. Talk about kicking someone when they're down! OP, if I were you I'd do a good deed tomorrow to try and balance out having been so horrid.

Poor, poor people. I hope they aren't too traumatised and are able to enjoy their wedding day.

There was a huge fire, residents are reporting that fire exits were locked and the alarms didn't work, it's also immediately after a period where racists were planning horrible things and the post-Grenfell changes still hadn't happened - but you're bothered about a couple saying they've lost everything, including their passports and her wedding dress?

May as well start wittering on about the cost of the dog for all the mean spirited bitching.

Hereward1332 · 28/08/2024 08:05

Without judging the couple, there is something wrong with a culture that normalises spending so much on a dress that will be worn once, and borrowing money for a party. The idea that you have to spend so much because it is a once in a lifetime event is shameful, even immoral. Reading the responses, the couple are not unusual, but normalising getting into debt for a wedding does not make it something that should be aspire to.
