To not have known that deli chicken is a level 1 carcinogen

nevertearusapart · 25/08/2024 20:42

Am feeling fairly stupid about this but only just realised that deli chicken / turkey are considered level 1 carcinogenic processed meats so linked to negative health effects incl. cancer. The examples used are typically ham, sausages, bacon, salami etc so I just assumed red meat for some reason. The deli chicken that we eat was labelled 100% natural and only contained chicken, potato starch, salt and vinegar but it now looks like it’s almost bad as the rest.
Does everyone know things like this and what do people put in kids lunches? (And yes I know it’s all about daily / excessive consumption etc etc)

INGREDIENTS: Chicken breast, salt, brown sugar

Prepared from 117g of raw chicken per 100g of finished product. Moisture is lost during cooking.

How can this be a carcinogen......

Probably all the oat milk and kale they are eating. Foods of the devil.

They’re more likely the culprits than Waitrose chicken or Sainsbury’s ham slices.

I have a feeling that avocados might be implicated.

EveryKneeShallBow · 25/08/2024 23:22

How the hell is a chicken breast cooked and sliced in a delicatessen evil poison, but the same chicken breast cooked and sliced at home a healthy lunch for toddlers? I feel old.

Pigeonqueen · 25/08/2024 23:26

I don’t think anyone can blame the increase in bowel cancer in young people on deli chicken. It’s not a new thing, processed luncheon stuff. In the 80s we lived on processed ham sandwiches, crispsy pancakes and all sorts of crap. I don’t think my lunchbox ever had any sort of fruit or veg in it. Neither did my friends. I actually think the cancer thing is more to do with pollution and micro plastics in the air etc than a bit of processed meat etc. People act like it was only invented in the last 15 years!

Allwatchedoverbytrees · 25/08/2024 23:26

I cannot be arsed with this. It's enough to
give you an eating disorder. And I really think the genetic component is massive.
You get lifelong chain smokers living till a hundred (my mum is a case in point, chain smoker, lives off red meat)
And vegan health freaks developing all kinds of cancer.
People want to believe it's more in their control than it is.. and there's a wierd edge to it of blame. Oh they ate too much sugar! It won't happen to me because I'm better than that.
Of course we should all at least attempt to live healthily. But that's not guarantee. And personally I don't think it's that healthy to be rating foods in this manner. If at all possible cook fresh organic food yeah.. but that is actually not always possible.. sometimes completely impossible.
There so many factors at play.
Basically if all your kid eats are ham sandwiches because they are asd don't worry they will die of cancer, they probably won't just for that alone. Coz loads plays into it it's not just what you eat at all.
Just do the best you can.

Pettyhangingbaskets · 25/08/2024 23:27

I really couldn’t give a fuck about a chicken or ham sandwich

I read a recent survey that said out of the people surveyed, 1/3 (I think - could have been even higher) hadn’t eaten a green vegetable in three weeks and the only pulses they had eaten (basically ever) were baked beans.
I think when we’re stressing about diets, these are the people that need to make the changes, not people who are eating the occasional slice of prepackaged chicken.

I try to avoid UPFs but it’s so difficult if you include all sauces, and basically anything that comes from a packet. Even when I make a stir fry with chicken and fresh veg, I use the micro rice as it’s so much quicker and doesn’t clump together. My roast dinner tonight has packet gravy and pre made yorkshires.

Boil in the bag rice is your friend!

I mean this is like the plastic straws isn't it?
Everyone worried about eating store bought chicken sandwiches.. meanwhile companies pumping out tonnes of pollution unregulated, every day.. microplastics in the water supply.
Government's need to do more to regulate. The choices of you as an individual do very little.
Even the chicken you buy fresh is probably pumped full of crap. Unless you reared it yourself.. but even then it's been drinking the water full of microplastics

Houseshmouse · 25/08/2024 22:46

Why do you think loads of young people are getting colon cancer.
If you didn't know this then it's time to educate yourself!
Watch 'what the health' if you want your mind blown!

Maybe you should educate yourself!!!

People have been eating processed meats for quite a long time, it's not something that has just appeared in our diets.

Those of you who think that by making it your life's mission to only eat "healthy" food (and bore the rest of us) you are somehow guaranteed a life free of ill health may well find yourself disappointed.

" people want to believe it's more in their control that it is... And there is a weird edge to it of blame "

I agree so much. It's almost like people have replaced religion in the sense of believing in god with a new belief that with a few dietary tweaks they can be masters of their own destiny.

Again, I am all for trying to be healthy. But this idea that if someone gets cancer they must have eaten more ham sandwiches than you is both ignorant and insulting.

On a similar vein I had someone who is otherwise intelligent genuinely insisting that yoga and the latest "superfood" fad (kale/pomegranate/ blueberries whatever it was that week) could cure a genetic condition I have had since birth.

Exactly, micro plastics, fertilizer and pesticides, vast plumes of air pollution from cars and planes and container ships (bringing your latest impulse buy half way round the word) ...

Dihydrogen monoxide (DHMO) kills, and it's in everything. It causes corrosion and suffocation in large quantities. Evidence has shown it's found in every human. And yet we keep consuming it. There is no hope.

Summertimer · 25/08/2024 23:40

Re marmite - is it a upf ?

Yep, it’s quite scary how many people see to think all cancers are caused by bad diets.

@KnittedCardi I know right? I’m still not sure exactly how - despite googling - but it’s something to do with how it’s cooked / preserved with the salt or, in my case, potato startch. Hopefully someone who knows will come across this and tell us!

I've stopped buying it @Agapornis .
I found it made me go to the loo too often.

nevertearusapart · 26/08/2024 00:00

Just to add that the point of my post was to highlight something that wasn’t obvious to me i.e. although the ingredients in this product are natural (chicken, potato starch, salt and vinegar), it’s still a processed meat and categorised as carcinogenic due to the salting / preservative process. Looks like it was news to some others here also so hopefully is helpful to them to know as well.
What people decide to do with the info - eat / don’t eat / use as dogfood (!) - is totally personal, as is clear from this thread!

It seems pretty likely that deli chicken could be very harmful.

I just found this ingredient in Tesco chicken slices:

Pentasodium salt or triphosphoric acid. STPP is an ingredient in detergents and soaps. Most gel, liquid, tablet, and powder forms of both laundry and dishwasher detergent contain STPP. As a food, it is generally regarded as safe, but large ingested amounts of the product can be toxic.8 Feb 2024

It's weird how governments want to keep it secret. I guess because so much of it is leaching into our rivers
