To be so thoroughly pissed off with Amnesty International

They have declared it to be “good news” that women in Australia are no longer free to congregate in any way, be it in person or online, without including males who wish to intrude, after a transwoman successfully sued the female-only social media app Giggle for discrimination when his request to join was refused.

x.com/amnesty/status/1826982698226737303?s=46&t=4wShKFu-g_j9Gtx-7DLRsQ

On top of this, it has come to light that they have altered some of the text on their website outlining the Taliban’s abhorrent treatment of females. According to Amnesty International-

women and girls were discriminated against in many ways, for the 'crime' of identifying as a girl

www.amnesty.org.uk/womens-rights-afghanistan-history

this was amended from the previous iteration of the text which read “being born a girl”.

By that logic, Afghan women and girls are either choosing to be oppressed by identifying as such, or they are not choosing to identify their way out of it (as if that would even be an option).

I truly can’t believe I used to respect them as a charity. When did they decide to stop giving a fuck about females?? How utterly disgraceful.

Amnesty lost the plot a few years ago. The Australian issue is bad enough, but to refer to Afghan girls and women as being oppressed because they "identify" as such is DISGUSTING.

Setyoufree · 25/08/2024 13:56

Agree completely, haven't donated to them for years as they seem to have entirely lost their way

blubberyboo · 25/08/2024 13:58

Agreed

cancelled donations to them a long time ago when their allegiance to the misogynistic ideology became apparent

in life we learn that not all charities are good ones nor have good intentions.

Glenthebattleostrich · 25/08/2024 13:59

They are a disgrace and I won't be donating to them again.

TheKeatingFive · 25/08/2024 14:02

Absolutely disgusting.

Just imagine insinuating that Afghani women are oppressed because of how they 'identify' rather than the reality of their sex. 🙄

JaxiiTaxii · 25/08/2024 14:02

That massively misleading picture on their X post is also just bizarre. Why not use Tickle's actual likeness if they are celebrating Tickle's win?

Amnesty are all about the peen.

Thevelvelletes · 25/08/2024 14:05

The women of Afghanistan don't want an education, hold positions in office, work.having a male chaperone when out is a necessity and the latest no access to tech devices and I'm quite sure a mobile phone didn't get a mention in the Qur'an.apoligies if that's spelt wrong.

Quite.
And by extension then, those females who choose to identify as males should suffer no discrimination. Cos being male is ok. So if all women in Afghanistan identified as males then there is no problem.
Yeah, right.

AyeDeadOn · 25/08/2024 14:07

I expect worse than nothing from Amnesty now but even with that low bar I was utterly sickened by the use of the term "identify".

I could not agree more OP. I refuse to donate to them.

SerafinasGoose · 25/08/2024 14:11

In the UK, legal precedent still suggests that the tide is rapidly turning on this repulsive, woman-hating ideology. So it's doubly disappointing when setbacks like this are encountered either at home or overseas.

The antipodes never had a particularly good track record when it came to misogynistic attitudes. But that it's now promoted under the disingenuous cloak of 'progressive politics' is a double-sickener.

Meantime, restrictions against the rights of women are moving apace in Afghanistan, including the most recent ban: that on women's voices being heard in public. Can said women identify against such hideous oppressive regimes, which are increasingly taking them right back to where they were before 2001? We all know the answer, and they all know exactly what a woman is when it comes to where to aim the rape and death threads.

As the dead-eyed, slogan-chanting, faithful Pridebots are so fond of saying, Amnesty can 'get in the bin'.

The picture is a screenshot of the Giggle app. I can’t think why they chose to use that (which has a photo of a traditional female woman), rather than using a picture of the plaintiff…

OK.

Yes because the Taliban are known for their accepting nature...not happening obviously.

Yeah, right.

Sadly, it does sort of work like that in reality.
Read "The underground girls of Kabul", by Jenny Nordberg for more information.
Or Google bacha posh for the same.

Truly the stuff of the middle ages.

Bettyboughtabitofbitterbutter · 25/08/2024 14:20

It's disgusting they think girls can "identify" out of the oppression they face in Afghanistan. Try being trans over there, go on, dare you.

The Bacha posh (girls raised/ treated as boys during childhood) have to revert to being women once they hit puberty as they are only treated as boys whilst young enough to pass as such. This is imbedded in Afghan culture. I’m not sure an adult woman choosing to identify as a transman would have anywhere near the same experience.

Badlifeday · 25/08/2024 14:34

I remember seeing a movie - Osama - that was about exactly that, an only daughter to a widowed mother pretending to be a boy so they could survive.
It did not end well for her.

FOJN · 25/08/2024 14:39

Their comments about women in Afghanistan are beneath contempt. The women in Afghanistan must enjoy their oppression otherwise they would exercise the option of becoming a man. Being a man wouldn't be a barrier to having children if that's what's stopping them because as we all know, men can get pregnant.

The gaslighting over Tickle is infuriating, block caps incoming.

TICKLE WAS EXCLUDED FROM GIGGLE BECAUSE OF HIS MALE SEX NOT BECAUSE OF HIS GENDER IDENTITY.

Helleofabore · 25/08/2024 14:55

It has been very sad to see Amnasty and their reactions this week.

wtfissummer · 25/08/2024 14:56

Amnesty blew it for me when they blamed Ukraine for defending themselves

AngeloMysterioso · 25/08/2024 17:00

I just don’t understand how they could be so obtuse, particularly with what they’ve written re Afghan women.

You are not being unreasonable at all. They have been hijacked by ideology and moved their core values and objectives a number of years ago. There report around Ireland and LGBT rights was an absolute disgrace. Ireland having one of the most progressive legal frameworks in this area in the world and one of only 7 countries at the time to permit self identification in law and had just permitted same sex marriage, yet they basically labelled the Irish Stare as an abusive State on par with the worst States in the world. There's numerous examples of this in the last few years. Their governance is toxic too. Their history of good outcomes previously ensures funding for now, but they are being exposed for what they have become and the sooner they are defunded the better.

JohnTheRevelator · 25/08/2024 17:35
