To not view this house

Name changed as I've spoken about this a lot in real life so don't want other posts linked.

DH wants to view this property. It is in the area we want and he loves it from the outside. I hate how it is set up, think it's really over priced and can't imagine how we would use the space.

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/150168083#/?channel=RES_BUY

Currently we are in a smaller property and I think we'd need to spend a lot to "fill" this house. I worry our current sofas etc. wouldn't fit. Looks like the family there now had the same issue. Lots of badly matched furniture round the sides of the rooms has honestly put me off.

There are 4 of us so the bedrooms would be good. The living areas, dining rooms etc. looks like too much dead space. Not a cosy feel at all has made me unable to see what I could do.
He is keen to go and view but I don't think that would help me get a view of what it could be, just more what it is.

Gut feeling is a no. Possible too much money considering I'd want to re do all the windows, the bathroom etc. But interested on opinions and what ideas for making this a home, other people have please.

Also turn it on its head - how would you feel if you really liked the look of a house and your DH just said no?

Suspish · 25/08/2024 13:00

The living room would be much cosier with the sofa set away from the wall and a unit behind. I'd redesign the kitchen to have a big table in the middle too. The bedrooms just need a well placed rug to fill the void. I think the current space just hasn't been properly used. It has so much potential.

Tizerry · 25/08/2024 13:00

You get a lot for your money in Peterborough, wow!

Mischance · 25/08/2024 13:01

Go and have a look. The photos have been taken with wide angle lens and make the spaces look bigger and more barren than they really are. I worked as a photographer and have often done this to make a space look bigger. I think you shou;d go and make a judgement on actually seeing the place.

TequilaNights · 25/08/2024 13:05

Looking at the photos there is someone in this home that uses a motorised chair, that seems to be why they keep most of the space in open areas clear.

I'd go and look at it, you could do a lot with this space.

I think it's beautiful

Bodeganights · 25/08/2024 13:07

Going by all the equipment in the house for an high needs person, I'd say that's why the furniture is spaced out.

I'd go look, I'd love the space free of anything for me, but I understand others require more things and rooms to feel more normal sized. There are many ways to do this that do not require more actual items of furniture or much spending.

@Verbena17

My PILs are struggling to sell their house near Stamford- I'm now wondering whether to post it on this thread Grin

Homes around Stamford usually get snapped up pretty quick. It’s a shame their’s isn’t yet. Feel free to DM me the Rightmove link so I can have a peek 😊

patchworkbear · 25/08/2024 13:08

It's a very inoffensive house. They've clearly styled it to show its potential- masses of space.

Investinmyself · 25/08/2024 13:08

It’s clear there’s a person with additional needs living there so it’s set up for a motorised chair.
It would look totally different with different placed furniture and rugs etc.

ProfessorPeppy · 25/08/2024 13:09

@Lms63738

It's not near the south east, it's South Lincolnshire, which is actually - in terms of latitude - around Birmingham level of northness/southness (depending on perspective). We live in the South East and it takes us over 2 hours to get to the PILs who live nearby.

It's also a grammar school area (Crowland has a 'secondary modern') which is off putting to lots of people (including me).

The countryside is erm Not Picturesque (lots of ditches, no hills).

Allthehorsesintheworld · 25/08/2024 13:10

I agree with the dead space. Dining room is a walk from the kitchen and with a kitchen that size who needs a dining room. Do you need 5 bedrooms and a study?
That is also a huge garden. I think you’d need a ride on mower and while men love those as boys toys their upkeep can be expensive. Even basic parts like a belt are expensive. Let that garden go for a few weeks and it’d be hard to get back to its pristine look.

ProfessorPeppy · 25/08/2024 13:10

@Verbena17 Right, will do! Thanks!

BatFugger · 25/08/2024 13:13

Estate agency photography is always weird and distorted.
I’d have a look as it may look/feel different in real life.

You get a lot for your money in Peterborough, wow!

it's just normal non-southern prices, if anything I think it's a little on the high side.

Tralalaka · 25/08/2024 13:15

It’s a 3500 square foot house in good condition for £650k. Why on earth wouldn’t you want to view it. It could be amazing with a bit of planning and imagination

sunseaandsoundingoff · 25/08/2024 13:15

I think you actually do need to go and see it because it's impossible to tell from the photos, as other people have said they are very wide angle. I think you'll see it as significantly smaller in real life.

Hereforthekicks · 25/08/2024 13:16

It'll be smaller in person

EmeraldIsla · 25/08/2024 13:18

That is a very badly decorated/furnished (very very valid reasons, as others have pointed out) glorious house. I could have great fun with that, once I'd got rid of that colour in the kitchen.

The kitchen doesn’t even need changing, the layout is great just needs new doors and fascias

zingally · 25/08/2024 13:20

I would go and view it personally. If only to get more of an idea of what you do and don't like. And remember, estate agent photos always make a house look bigger than it is.
It's a perfectly "nice" house. But rather a bland, characterless box. The current owners clearly have at least one high-needs wheelchair bound resident, so that would explain the need for a lot of open space. That purple kitchen is absolutely awful though.

I'd say the price is about right for a neutral canvas, large modern house in Peterborough.

Another2Cats · 25/08/2024 12:33

"£650k round here would barely get a 2/3 bed terrace, so my value for money radar is a bit off!"

I live about 8 miles away from there. It's maybe a tad overpriced but there again it really is big, around 320 sq metres including the garage.

Slightly smaller homes are currently around £580k-£600k

For example:

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147674609#/?channel=RES_BUY

or

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/143197499#/?channel=RES_BUY

That's a much more appealing house and set up, though on a smaller scale in terms of room sizes but still has enough space and all the rooms and facilities needed to be comfortable for four people.

Then there's the additional space for expansion into the garage and room above. Plus barns. It's what the estate agents might describe as a good package. And it's cheaper than the large house.

sunnshine · 25/08/2024 13:25

Never judge a house from the advert - go and see it.

I thought our current house looked terrible from the advert and was saying “Well obviously this won’t be the one” as we walked in, I was totally wrong.

There’s a reason for that!

Redburnett · 25/08/2024 13:29

£3k council tax (approx) would put me off, along with potentially high energy bills. But if your DH wants to view it I think in fairness you should have a look.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 25/08/2024 13:30

It looks nice and your DH likes it so I'd view it. If you don't like it in reality, no one is making you buy it cos you looked at it.

View it, have a conversation about what was good/bad and then go from there.
