To ask what you pay for car insurance?

We are renewing our car insurance. Multi car policy, two 5 year old cars. One does 7000 miles a year and the other 12000. Kept on drive overnight in nice residential area.

I have been driving for 5 years and have no claims in that time.

DH has done advanced driving qualifications but does have one claim from a bump in a car park two years ago.

The cheapest quote we can get is £135 a month / 1600 a year.

Are they having us on or does this sound about right?

Mines nearly £400, OH is around £800.
Have you shopped around? My renewal quote was higher than new quotes, plus go through a cashback site to get the quotes...

Nw22 · 24/08/2024 13:59

Ours has gone up from 650 to 1200 in past 2 years. No claims made.

Nw22 · 24/08/2024 13:59

Ours has gone up from 650 to 1200 in past 2 years. No claims made.

Ouch. Maybe ours is accurate then.

Ours were £180 (only 4000 mileage) & about £250 (10000 mileage sporty fast car)
Home counties, on the drive, full no claims.
We are old though!

Sunseed · 24/08/2024 14:02

How does your multi-car quote compare to having 2 separate policies? I found it cheaper to keep them separate.

olivecapes · 24/08/2024 14:03

Ours rocketed last year, we pay £910 a year for 2 cars similar age and mileage, but one is very powerful and still worth over £25k, we have 10+ years no claims each.

I suspect the bump has had a big impact, and isn't it around 7+ years premiums tend to go down?

glasgow1983 · 24/08/2024 14:04

A car kept on the driveway can be quite attractive to thieves, especially if it has keyless entry.

A car parked on the street might be at higher risk of being hit, but the location of its keys might be less obvious.

Worth shopping around and using the price comparison websites, and don't work on the assumption that multi car will necessarily be cheaper.

Hatty65 · 24/08/2024 14:06

Sounds horrendous to me.

My car insurance renewed today - £247 for the year. I've got 20 plus year NCB however.

Maray1967 · 24/08/2024 14:07

Got mine for £350 a year up from £300 - 2016 ford fiesta, low mileage about 5k. I had 4 years no claims. In Liverpool.

Gogogo12345 · 24/08/2024 14:10

If I did mine for just normal use I'm looking at just under £300. However as I have to insure it for food delivery it's nearly £1100

Alevelnamechange · 24/08/2024 14:11

Ours is currently £750, 7 year no claim, on drive parking, one car, leafy Surrey (3 years old, around 4k miles per year). Its gone up from £615 last year and £550 the year before.

See also building insurance, contents insurance, health and life insurance.

There is an insurance crisis which must increase the risk of folk being uninsured, just because it's got so expensive.

YourWinter · 24/08/2024 14:12

Just me, 68, maximum no claims discount and driving a 15 year old diesel estate car. A happy hour on all the comparison websites got fully comprehensive cover down from the renewal quote of £370 with Swindon to £235 with Aviva, for the year. Bought through Confused.com I also got a £20 Sainsbury’s gift voucher. Other comparison websites came up with much the same prices, but the gift voucher incentive swung it. I’m happy with the price.

angelinaballerina7 · 24/08/2024 14:13

Mines gone up almost 30% a year for the last 3 years. I’ve got 15 years no claims and the quotes I got ranged from £480 to £1630, utter madness.

Bluevelvetsofa · 24/08/2024 14:14

Ours went from £350 to £1020. No claims, just a reported ‘incident’ which wasn't claimed for.

We got it down to £780.

OwlsDance · 24/08/2024 14:16

Renewals are often rip offs, you do need to go and shop around. My renewal went up from £400 to over £1000 🤔 nothing changed at all, no claims.

Having said that, I still couldn't get anything below £700, so some of it could be due to inflation.

Solymoly · 24/08/2024 14:18

Mines £200, only 4000 miles, DH £450, 14000 miles, for a year, that's with protected no claims, legal protection but no courtesy car, we don't have to state where we keep it, drive or on the road, it's just at our address. We are in our 60s

ditalini · 24/08/2024 14:19

Mine is £250 with esure. It jumped by £40 last year, and then another £40 when I got a new car (similar size and power but not so old) a couple of months after renewal.

The esure quote was about £400 cheaper than the next company though. Go figure.

Very low mileage, 17 years no claims, parked in private car park.

Sirzy · 24/08/2024 14:20

I pay £21 a month, full no claims and 20 plus years driving.

Redglitter · 24/08/2024 14:22

My renewal went from £400 to £925. Shopped around & got it for £325.

Full NCB, off road parking, low mileage

sleepyscientist · 24/08/2024 14:30

12yrs no claims, new car, 12k a year including business mileage £275 with 1st central. I put the excess up to the maximum of 1k plus compulsory (wouldn't claim sub 1.5k anyway as have manufacturer minor damage cover).

DreamW3aver · 24/08/2024 14:32

carinsurances · 24/08/2024 13:59

Ouch. Maybe ours is accurate then.

Theres no such thing as accurate when it comes to car insurance. It costs what the insurer says it costs after they've taken into account the car, where you live, how old you are and other factors

What other people pay is absolutely irrelevant to you, it's a bespoke product

AuntieMarys · 24/08/2024 14:34

£360 ...10 years no claims

YellowphantGrey · 24/08/2024 14:36

I insure one car, keep it on drive overnight, at work during the day and get free business cover too. Husband named driver and my renewal this year was £380.00 for the year. I have a sinking fund for it so pay it in a lump sum. I have 26 years no claims as I've been driving since I was 17.

SmallChanges3 · 24/08/2024 14:36

We have a multi policy, two cars and one buildings/contents insurance.

All in we pay £106 per month. I have 10 years NCD and husband has 5. Late thirties.

Prior to that, my car insurance was about £500-£600 a year alone. We're with Admiral.
