To wonder how people choose a sink. All types appear to be s***t!

Admittedly new to the new kitchen game but had no idea sinks needed so much thought.😳

From my research:

  • enamel chips and breaks things
  • white stains
  • black shows up water marks and looks awful
  • stainless steel gets scratches and is no longer in

😫

I had an under sink stainless steel before my new stainless steel one over the counter. All the crap between the counter and sink was grim and so hard to clran and the seal went.
Always get a bigger sink than you think you need..and always have drainage space. I didn't with my old sink and someone would always want a cold water straight after I had run a bowl of hot water. The sink was too small for any plastic bowl..
I had grooves in black granite as a drainer. Never drained properly and was hard to keep clean.
Love my new sink. With drainer. It was £120 as well

PS tap with pull down hose is excellent, so glad we got one.

I’ve got a white ceramic sink. I drop things too so I”ve got a wire basket in it which breaks the fall iyswim. It doesn’t get stained and is much easier to keep clean than a stainless steel one.

HotCrossBunplease · 24/08/2024 10:48

Crap between the counter and the sink? As in underneath the overhanging counter edges? Here? I’ve just checked mine and there is none, just a tiny bit of wear after 8 years. Never ever had an issue with this. How would it even get there unless you were squashing food up the edges of your sink?

Very happy with my stainless steel sink. LH drain, middle sink, RH half sink.

burnoutbabe · 24/08/2024 11:33

I have had my black sink 14 years now (sink/half sink and drainer) and it still looks identical.

London water so maybe that affects things in other areas?

Do you miss a draining board and cupboard space underneath.

Sink shape is a whole other rabbit hole I’m whirling around in too!😫

Honestly this takes up more head space than the cupboards! Who knew?

WE analysed our kitchen use and identified the sink was the main pinch point. So we have a standard sized single SS sink next to the dishwasher, yes with a draining board, in the corner, so not really noticeable. And a small circular sink in the central island, so you can fill a kettle or wash your hands when someone is preparing veg in the main sink.

But then our kitchen is approaching 20 years old, so fashion doesn't come in to it. It's still looking clean and smart so I've no intention of replacing it.

Use the space you lose under the sink counter to put a boiler tap in. I have a quooker tap and it is really great.

Here is mine : stainless steal sink, glass worktop with drainage grooves and a quooker tap.

brushed stainless steel is the best.

but round edges and no sharp/folded corners. thise only look good in the show room.

StormingNorman · 24/08/2024 11:45

I had a flat bottomed sink in one house and spent my life cleaning it and seeeping water and debris down the plughole. Consider how it’s going to drain!

Doingmybest12 · 24/08/2024 11:53

I would love a double stainless Belfast or double farmhouse stainless. The second sink to use for draining.

Saz12 · 24/08/2024 11:59

I have a ceramic sink, and havent managed to chip it or break glasses in it.
However, wouldnt have a white sink in different material from white worktop, as them being slightly different shades of white would drive me crazy!

HotCrossBunplease · 24/08/2024 12:06

Our quartz has stained a bit, and I do chase coloured spills quite quickly for that exact reason. Barkeeper’s friend is good for cleaning it though if you don’t get to something immediately. (Don’t be discouraged if other cleaners don’t work, BKF is in a different league).

I’m intrigued by all the glass ones, I don’t remember that being an option when we did our kitchen 8 years ago.

Londonmummy66 · 24/08/2024 12:08

I have a big traditional butlers sink and it is great - easy to clean and never broken anything in it.The kitchen was put in 22 years ago and the sink is still going strong. Main advice would be to go for a high arched tap as it makes cleaning taller pans and vases much easier.

OneTC · 24/08/2024 12:10

Stainless all the way.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 24/08/2024 12:10

I’m struggling with picking a tap 😭
My sink is stainless steel

SensibleSigma · 24/08/2024 12:11

How does glass surface compare price wise, anyone know?

Busy replanning my fantasy kitchen…

mugglewump · 24/08/2024 12:12

Francke stainless steel. I previously had a ceramic one; never again.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/08/2024 12:12

Heartened to see so many votes for stainless steel! That's what we have. Double sink - one big, one smaller next to it. Very practical. Looks absolutely fine to my eyes. Function is what I want from a sink, not style.

Candl3Mak3r · 24/08/2024 08:32

Apparently ceramic chips and breaks things too.🤷‍♀️😫

I love our ceramic sink, easy to keep clean and it looks beautiful. Sinks can’t break things, if you drop something breakable it’s liable to smash. Humans break things, not sinks.

HotCrossBunplease · 24/08/2024 12:18

nationalsausagefund · 24/08/2024 10:07

😂 Sorry! I’ve probably ruined all your kitchen planning by sharing the dream kitchen/insta.

I still can’t find the freestanding sink you mentioned though, can you direct me?

Solymoly · 24/08/2024 12:19

Our is a Rangemaster, which is quartz and acrylic, I like the appearance but it does stain on the bottom, though probably because DH chucks his tea dregs in it and doesn't swill it out

That’s a bit pedantic! Drop the same plate from the same height into a ceramic sink and a stainless steel sink and it is likely to smash on the ceramic but not the SS.

Things inevitably get dropped in sinks. So it’s about mitigating the effects.

frecklejuice · 24/08/2024 12:24

We have a black sink and it was the worst purchase ever, kitchen only 2 years old so we are stuck with it. Water marks are terrible and we have tried everything. Open to suggestions though!

HotCrossBunplease · 24/08/2024 12:27

For those in hard water areas, we found it a good investment to get water softener which softens all water at source. They are not cheap but we have no limescale anywhere in the house. Makes no difference to the water for cooking, tooth cleaning or drinking. I live in London but grew up in a very soft water area so I was not prepared to have limescale in my life.
