New neighbours

We have new neighbours, moved in two weeks ago. I put a card through the door to welcome them and put my number in it to introduce ourselves. The woman texted to say thank you for the card which was lovely. We never heard our old neighbours (we're semi detached with the halls and stairs adjoining) however we now hear the new neighbours going up and down the stairs very loudly, they must be pretty heavy footed. They also have two young children who I think run up and down them fairly often. They seem a lovely family :) just wondering would you mention it or just leave it and put up with it? It really is loud and can be heard over us having the TV on in the evening. Just so odd to me we never heard our old neighbours at all through the wall and they were a young family too...

Our ndn asked us of my dd's dps tap dancing.... We had no idea they could hear us on the stairs.. Worth a mention imo.
Another neighbour came and said they could see us using the loo!! Even with frosted glass!

Bax765 · 21/08/2024 21:10

I wouldn't mention it. Hearing people walk up & down the stairs isn't worth souring the relationship with your new neighbours over. It's just part of having neighbours.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 21/08/2024 21:20

Might they have removed the carpet from the stairs?

Id have a chat with them - ask them if any of your noise bothers them etc which will hopefully inspire them to ask if any of their noise bothers you.

selldonaterecycle · 21/08/2024 21:26

I think rather than say anything you should be pleased you were so lucky for so long with previous neighbours!
I'm sure MNs will have a whole host of NDN noise stories!

We had this in a previous house. Youngish couple never heard any noise apart from, randomly, them switching on their bedroom light at night?!
They moved out and a family with teen children moved in and Oh My Gosh the difference.😅The worst was the Mum yelling at them - one night was especially memorable
"No-one does fucking anything in this house!"

My friend has very loud neighbours. One weekend morning she heard the woman NDN shouting several times up the stairs "Do you want a bacon sandwich?"
My friend shouted back "Yes please, brown sauce on mine!"

I lived in a terraced flat of old houses years ago and one of my upstairs neighbours had very loud sex very often.

Not much you can do OP I'm afraid apart from turn up your TV!

Staunchlystarling · 21/08/2024 21:29

If it’s just people going up and down the stairs I’d leave it, especially as it’s likely they can hear you,

OrwellianTimes · 21/08/2024 21:30

Did they remove the carpet?

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 21/08/2024 21:33

When I lived in a terraced house, I never heard my neighbours.
Then my next door neighbour moved a new boyfriend in and for a few months I could hear him walking up and down the stairs.

It sounded like he was in my house it seemed so loud.

After a couple of months though, I sort of learned to tune it out completely.
I know he was still there, he must have still been walking up and down the stairs, but I never heard him again.

Give it a bit of time, it might just be that you need a while to tune it out.

Starlightstarbright3 · 21/08/2024 21:44

I can hear my ndn going up and downstairs - as they removed carpets and sanded down stairs .. it really doesn’t affect my life .

its part of having neighbours

Ryeman · 21/08/2024 21:48

I can hear my ndn laugh, right now as I type. Drives me mad - nothing in life can be that funny Derek

CatMum10 · 21/08/2024 23:11

Were the last neighbours elderly/disabled and could they have had a stairlift or not gone upstairs often? Stairlifts are very quiet these days. As others have said, it's trendy to remove carpet and have a runner on stairs now, and much cheaper than carpet. Or they might be decorating. In any case, noise from the stairs isn't something you could complain about in a dispute, so it's not unreasonable and therefore not worth mentioning. It could come across as nit-picking. I would use a neighbour's number only for emergencies.

slipperypenguin · 21/08/2024 23:43

I wouldn't mention this unless it was during the night or particularly disturbing you. Doesn't sound like it is. I'd pick my battles

TheClawDecides · 21/08/2024 23:48

This isn't a case of them being loud.

This is a case of you being used to much quieter neighbours, that's all.

They're not doing anything wrong, so no, don't mention it or you'll make them worried about living their normal day to day lives.

KreedKafer · 22/08/2024 00:00

I suspect they can hear you too. And going up and downstairs isn’t unreasonable behaviour on their part - they’re a family with kids and you live in a semi. You will hear noise. It can’t be helped.

It’s also possible that if they’ve only been in two weeks, they’ve taken up carpets and haven’t got much in the way of furnishings yet, which will make everything sound louder at the moment.

HeddaGarbled · 22/08/2024 00:07

You absolutely must not “mention” to your new neighbours that you can hear them going up and down their stairs! Fast track to animosity and a whole world of unpleasantness.

Lovelycupofcoffee · 24/08/2024 18:51

We’ve just moved into a newbuild and the neighbours are quite loud . I think it’s because the walls are thinner . We can hear them walking up and down the stairs and the kids run across the bedrooms which is really loud. We probably annoy them though as we get up early to go to work . They did say they will be looking to move soon though as the house is to small . We will ignore as life is too short to fallout with them.

You would hate me as a neighbour i laugh at anything.
Just happy people.

Greydays3 · 27/08/2024 09:50

My friend lived in an old terrace and the staircases were side by side. Next door had 4 teenage boys.
It was noisy.
On advice she bought some inexpensive large rug tapestry type wall hangings which she tacked inexpensive insulation to and hung on the party wall.
Only cost her a couple of hundred.
She felt it dulled it noticeably and was money well spent.

Would you do an experiment with sleeping bags to see if it made any difference?
Just an idea!

Louise303 · 27/08/2024 11:33

If its only been two weeks I would not mention it they could be decorating they are just settling in.

You can hear the sound but is it actually impacting on you? Not all noise is 'bad'.

Sleeping bags? Attached to your wall? Eh?

Absolutely this, unfortunately.

Judging by how these type of threads usually go on MN, most people would start making more noise just to piss you off if you mention it.

Hopefully they've just removed carpets and will replace them soon.

Greydays3 · 27/08/2024 12:53

NetflixAndKill · 27/08/2024 12:27

Sound needs somewhere to go. In empty spaces with little soft furnishings it will reverberate.
Tiles, leather sofas, wooden floors, hard surfaces in a kitchen will all contribute to sound not being absorbed.

It's really not that hard to understand.

If the OP tries to increase her soft furnishings it may help.

Have you any helpful suggestions yourself?

Ariela · 27/08/2024 14:10

I would just mention, if you get to chat to them, that you're looking forward to them finishing decorating and putting the new stairs carpet down.
They likely have no idea!

Thankful for no neighbour one side and the other has taken a job abroad so empty house bar the gardeners!

AvonCallingBarksdale · 27/08/2024 14:26

As I always say on these threads - if you are in a position to do so, shell out for proper soundproofing. We did on a previous house - complete game changer.
