I've started getting into reading again and now looking for book recommendations. I don't know if it's just me not enjoying reading as much as I used to, but some of the titles I've read/attempted to recently just don't seem to grab my attention and I struggle to get through them.

I'm currently reading People Like Her by Ellery Lloyd. It's ok, but a bit slow.

I prefer mysteries and thrillers.

Please give me some ideas!

Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin.

Any good non fiction reads?

Madamlulu · 21/08/2024 17:13

I agree with Strange Sally Diamond - I read it a couple of weeks ago and loved it!

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 21/08/2024 17:15

Not a thriller at all, just a wonderfully written and absorbing book about a life, Lessons by Ian McEwan, I couldn't put it down, all his books are excellent.

thiccapricot · 21/08/2024 17:15

It might not be your thing - the The Heart’s Invisible Furies. I couldn’t put it down, a really beautiful book that will make you feel every single emotion. Very funny too

GrouchyKiwi · 21/08/2024 17:15

Also agree with I Am Pilgrim.

Codename Verity by Elizabeth Wein
Educated by Tara Westover
The Choice by Edith Eger

For something more lighthearted there's always and forever Georgette Heyer.

And fun urban fantasy reads by Helen Harper, Donna Augustine, Heather G Harris, and Lauretta Hignett.

Ooh. And Lindsay Buroker, especially Death Before Dragons, and The Emperor's Edge series.

I’ve been reading some of my old book on my kindle lately

horror - one long night by Richard Laymon
this guy is sick and I wonder what sort of childhood he had to write such a “Vivid “book but his writing is excellent
only book where I got up and checked the doors were shut 😂😂

another horror is James Herbert The Rats trilogy

Any good non fiction reads?

The Splendid and the Vile, about Churchill in 1940, I'm reading at the moment and it's fascinating.

HDready · 21/08/2024 17:17

Agree re Lisa Jewell. I’ve just read, and really
enjoyed, The Beach Hut by Leah Pitt. Raced through it on holiday and my mum now has my copy and is doing the same.

Bohemond23 · 21/08/2024 17:18

Another vote for Strike books and I am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes. DH has also just finished his latest book Year of the Locust.

NoCoco · 21/08/2024 17:18

Wrong place wrong time by Gillian McCallister, so good!
What happened to Nina by Dervla McTiernan
The Jigsaw Man by Nadine Matheson
No one saw a thing - Andrea Mara

Any good non fiction reads?

‘Stolen Focus’ by Johann Hart
’Educated’ by Tara Westover
’The Splendid and the Vile’ by Erik Larson
’This is Going to Hurt’ by Adam Kay

Cornflakelover · 21/08/2024 17:20

Glad to see several people mentioned “I am Pilgrim”
its definitely a book that hooks you from the start and has so many twists that you don’t see coming

it’s well written and not to many characters that you get confused 😂😂. And I actually felt sorry for the bad guy in the end

Im Surprised that it’s not been made a a big film

RedRobyn2021 · 21/08/2024 17:21

Qualify by Vera Nazarian

It's on audible, included last time I checked. I found it quite gripping.

Kaamos · 21/08/2024 17:23

The Maiden by Kate Foster

dontforgetme · 21/08/2024 17:23

I recently read The Institute by Stephen King. It was my first King book I've ever read and I was definitely impressed. I could not put it down!

I read A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini a couple of years ago and I genuinely could not put that book down. It was amazing, I was sad when it finished. Beautifully written, emotional, thought provoking - just everything you want from a book. I would go as far to say it's my favourite book.

mumto2teenagers · 21/08/2024 17:24

Not all thrillers, but these are some of my favourite books from the last year or so:

The Silent Patient - Alex Michaelides
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Taylor Jenkins Reid
Hamnet - Maggie O'Farrell
My Sister, The Serial Killer - Oyinkan Braithwaite
A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini
The Nightingale - Kristin Hannah

Glad to see the positive reviews for Strange Sally Diamond as I've just bought this.

godmum56 · 21/08/2024 17:24

if you like edgy urban magic, try the King's Watch series by Mark Hayden. His action novels without magic in are good too.

Any good non fiction reads?

House of Glass by Hadley Freeman, about her Jewish family history, a fascinating book.
Educated by Tara Westover about her appalling fundamentalist Mormon background and her escape from it via college and university, shocking and uplifting.

Salome61 · 21/08/2024 17:26

Wolf Hall trilogy by Hilary Mantell.

Judellie · 21/08/2024 17:27

The Witch Trade by Michael Malloy. I tend to prefer children's books!

dizzy174 · 21/08/2024 17:27

@melisma Girl with the dragon tattoo trilogy by Steig Larrsen

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 21/08/2024 16:38

Last Bus to Woodstock by Colin Dexter. It's the first Inspector Morse book, I've not been able to put it down unlike some of the books I've read.

Also sometthing different but Neverwhere by Neil Gaimen, so much fun to read and imagine what the London in the book is like.

Omg! I adore Colin Dexter. He’s my favourite author. The Morse books are so beautifully written. Hope you read them all after Last Bus To Woodstock x Sorry just reread your post. Do you not like the others?

makingmakingbaconpancakes · 21/08/2024 17:29

It's a while ago I read these, and not to everyone's taste but I remember staying up until the early hours reading the Philip Pullman Dark Materials trilogy. Not sure I've done that with anything since, but most recently the book I've read where I couldn't wait to get time to pick it up was Tomorrow Tomorrow Tomorrow. Absolutely loved it

EasternStandard · 21/08/2024 17:29

'Alive' was brilliant. I couldn't believe what people went through and many survived
