Or am I the only one interested what she is eying next? Any comment on the reasonableness or otherwise of Rachel's next focus?

Chancellor sees Government borrow £3bn more than forecast last month

According to the Office for National Statistics ( ONS ), public sector net borrowing stood at £3.1billion in July.

The point is that it’s nonsense to bang on about raising taxes ‘like old Labour’ when Tories have done far more of it than old Labour ever did - and what have they spent it on? At least old Labour used it for the social good.

Yes this is something that some seem not to care about, highest taxes, almost 100% debt to Gdp but absolutely nothing to show for it.

Other countries in similar economic problems have decent roads, public services to show for these taxes and debt but the UK? nothing at all.

Aren't people worried about who has ended up with this money?

Same with immigration, even with restrictions on work visas, still running at 3x the 2019 figure, yet 2.7m on long term sick, Mental & Physical health services so bad people give up work, so we import workers, what a way to have run the economy over the last 14 years.

Tough shit. It’s going for everyone except those who really need it. There are millions of us who won’t even notice because we gave it away.

That's not true though is it that "it's going for everyone except those who really need it." There are plenty of pensioners who only receive the state pension who do need the fuel allowance and are now going to miss out. They are the ones who will struggle this winter.

Wow so you learned all about their democracy, policing, sentencing on crimes and riots while you were on holiday!

I usually lounge around pool, eat, drink and sunburn too much. Suppose it takes allsorts to make a world 😂

No, we have a family connection here. It’s not a pool holiday and anyway I burn easily.

Where did you go?

Europe

ChallahPlaiter · 22/08/2024 16:46

cardibach · 22/08/2024 16:30

Do what?
Visit places they have family ties to?
Research places they will visit to know what it might be like or what might be interesting?
Visit interesting places?
I don’t have abroad family so I can’t do that, but I can assure you I do the others.

Edited

Yes, a drinking, sunbathing/burning poolside holiday wouldn’t be my cup of tea. I like to see stuff, no matter how much the kids protest!

Exactly! What did we get in return for our hard earn money? Nothing.
This needs to change as from 4th July.
I think the Labour government does have that clear. They have all eyes on them. We expect them to use our money for our benefit.

This site was pretty much overrun with demands for lockdowns and support. It was obvious at the time taxes would go up. I'm not sure how a pandemic would be dealt with without increase in public spending

Although I was more against than for the approach as I knew it would be higher taxes and other issues

As for Labour I think the public sector will be happy but whether everyone else in the private sector will be, or pensioners for that matter we'll see

I think realism is setting in for many about what Labour will be like

Ginger? It's a bane, isn't it. There's a titian streak in my family, but I inherited my father's colouring unlike my siblings.

MushMonster · 22/08/2024 17:29

You are right that a pandemic will always be a huge financial problem. That is not the previous government fault. They dealt with it, we had lockdowns, furlough schemes, extra costs on PPE, testing kits and so on. But they did mess up quite a bit of it, which is their fault.

Also, the issues we are in are not due only to the pandemic, at all. It has come after years of ignoring issues. The estate of the NHS could and should have been addressed when things started going in the unsastifactory pile. The price of houses in this country is crazy, which cripples both home owners and renters. If the average wage cannot buy you the average house, there is an issue. Also, why should a person that is working full time need to have their income topped up with UU or other benefits to live? The price of a basic and standard living in UK is quite off regarding the wages scale. All this could have been sorted by the previous lot. It only benefits banks and corporations, not the country. And regarding the working class, we are some sort of ok in the meantime we do not live in an expensive city, we eat asda own brand beans on toast, we do not get ill, never need the GP or any medication and can do with a tshirt at 11C.
Remember what Liz Truss did to this country? I will never gorget that. Now, the money has gone somewhere. Not to our pockets, no, but to some already very very rich pocket. Why should we tolerate this when it is our money? The money we work hard for?

MushMonster · 22/08/2024 17:33

@EasternStandard you surely do not want more of the same? You want to live in a country with good health care, schools, good roads, pharmacies, goid transport, nice clean streets, get your bins collected and so on and on?

I'm not seeing much than tax rises and increased borrowing. It feels more 70s than 90s tbh. I think the FT April prediction sounds pretty spot on - taxes, borrowing and public / private sector schism

But I guess we'll see if your vision comes to fruition and if not some reality might settle in

People keep saying this about tax rises. Where are you getting it from? Or figures around borrowing? Are you just guessing?

Makes your comment about reality seem a bit ironic…

BIossomtoes · 22/08/2024 18:06

Which taxes have risen? I haven’t noticed any tax rises. Mind you, there’s hardly been time.

MushMonster · 22/08/2024 18:21

I am ok with reality, thanks.
It is just that I tried really hard with the previous government and just could not see my reality getting any better.
I am watching the Labour government with open and tired eyes, but I still have some hope.

I don’t read either version. I walk past a news stand every morning, read the headlines, and thats Enough for me. Everyone I know who reads it IRL is an unreformed bigot so that doesn’t help my RL opinion of it. So no thanks. It’s a no from me.

Look no further than the accounts of the private sector, especially those connected to the previous Tory government, for an answer to that question.

We've experienced energy, health & social care, financial, and cost of living crises over the last few years, all while the companies providing energy, healthcare, finance, and the essentials have been reporting record profits.

The energy crisis is a perfect example: the 'regulator' removes the price cap due to the supposed impact the volatility of the energy market will have on providers, the government steps in and shovels billions upon billions of public funds into their accounts, and suddenly, those poor energy giants—who were supposedly on the verge of bankruptcy—are reporting record profits.

In Brazil I believe they call it clientelism; corruption but just in the right side of the law.

Come back in October. I predict tax rises, means tested state pension and means tested disability benefits - they only seem to be interested in one term.

And for those who miss it by about 50p and lose out on hundreds of pounds worth of support ? Means testing is a race to the bottom and the pension credit is a cliff edge that Labour said they wouldn’t countenance. Oh wait - they did !!

Tories had 14 years to show us what they could do, they had 10 years before the pandemis.
All countries have had global problems but only the UK has high debt with nothing to show for it.

I ve voted Tory before but those days are gone, they are too extreme and too corrupt, some of the stuff that happened during CV was nothing short of criminal, then they gave us Boris, Brexit and Liz Truss.

I ve a relative that works in the community as an Occupational Therapist, the stuff she tell me that goes on is 3rd World, just crazy demand, no staff that no amount of reform will ever address, it will take years of training staff and changing how we treat our bodies.

She has had enough, is leaving for a local private hospital, its that or a breakdown but the need for her and many others is still there.

If she plays about with IHT it may not be to the government's credit. In most ordinary families who are buying their own house, children often go without to save for a deposit and pay the mortgage. Why should they be taxed when they inherit?

When houses owned by the deceased come up for sale, in some locations it may be that property managers and landlords sit on the heirs until they have to sell in the end. The Treasury adds interest on any IHT after 6 months, and few heirs can keep up the utilities and insurance on a vacant home.

Some are persuaded to sell low for a quick sale as ''anything more only goes to the Treasury''. It is daft, I know, because it is a tax, not the whole amount of the limit, but when push comes to shove, buyers win. It is how many landlords obtain their portfolio.

It would be unwise to give more wealth to property managers and developers and landlords at the expense of the heirs - and the Government, The ones who lose out are the hard working parents who thought they were leaving something to the children. It is false economy.
