To think this just rules me out completely?

Job interview for a start date in just under 3 weeks time. I should apparently hear back this week but I reckon I’m going to be automatically ruled out as I don’t have a DBS check and this position needs an enhanced one and I think it will take longer than that to receive the copy? Feel deflated now.

Apply now. If they want to see it, say you have applied and will give it to them when you get it.

GogAndMagog · 21/08/2024 03:56

In my experience an enhanced DBS has to be requested by the employer but they have never taken more than 5/6 days.

EMary12345 · 21/08/2024 03:58

Employer has to do them and everyone needs one - even if you have one if you move to a new job you have to have a new one.

Toddlerteaplease · 21/08/2024 04:11

It's the Employers job to sort thar out. As others have said.

niadainud · 21/08/2024 04:54

You can subscribe to the DBS renewal service which speeds up the process for an employer. There's a small fee of about £13.

MsMarple · 21/08/2024 05:10

I don’t think that on its own rules you out - a friend got a job in a school last year and they just made sure she was always with another adult until her DBS came through, then she could go about by herself.

ntmdino · 21/08/2024 05:15

It should be requested by them when they employ you. If you're unsure, then just ring and ask them.

Powderblue1 · 21/08/2024 05:33

No it shouldn't rule you out as most employers need to do a new one (even if you have one already).

Smartiepants79 · 21/08/2024 05:38

Employers have to request their own DBS. Even if you already had one you’d have to get another one anyway. If they like you they’ll offer it subject to passing the DBS. Then if you pass it the jobs would be yours.

rentersleaf · 21/08/2024 05:55

Surely everyone will need one? Except staff already working there. My dd did one recently took about two weeks to come

This, I’d had a DBS for a volunteer position but when I started a new job they couldn’t accept it and needed to do their own.

It’ll need to be done by the company after they’ve made a job offer. There’s no point at all in applying for your own.

My job puts new starters on ‘reduced duties’ until it’s cleared.

Doingmybest12 · 21/08/2024 06:12

They will apply for this check, make sure you are ready with your ID. They seem to be coming back quite quickly at the moment and yes then apply to join the update scheme so that if you move jobs the process of rechecking is quicker.

Fathercrispness · 21/08/2024 06:17

Jobs with a short start date are a bit of a red flag because they probably already have an internal candidate in mind. Surely most people would need to give more than 3 weeks notice to their current employer?

StonwEd · 21/08/2024 06:19

I verify these as part of my job. Contacted casual or volunteer - doesn’t matter if you had one yesterday, we’ll be doing a new one before you start with us 👍🏼

5475878237NC · 21/08/2024 06:26

They're coming back very quickly at the moment.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 21/08/2024 06:30

Theres no way an employer won't request a new DBS check so don't worry, nobody has a foot above you by already having one

ALunchbox · 21/08/2024 06:33

I once got a job that requires DBS. It took three months for me to get it (!) but they still honoured the job.

WonderingWanda · 21/08/2024 06:52

If it's in a school then you will just have to be accompanied at all times until its been done.

ImaginaryCat · 21/08/2024 06:58

If the job description says "enhanced DBS required" they just mean they will be applying for one for the person they offer to, so don't bother applying if it would flag up something that means you can't work there. They don't mean you have to have one already.
As others have said, plans will be in place while they wait for it to come through.

DreamW3aver · 21/08/2024 07:14

Unless the emoyer is clueless they know the DBS rules so it's a non issue as everyone will be the same except as posted above internal candidates in which case failure to get the is nothing to do with the DBS

Was just going to say that. It rules most external candidates out surely. So if they got an absolutely ideal candidate who had a months notice they’d say no. I doubt it.

fishonabicycle · 21/08/2024 07:28

Your employers apply for it. I had one when I worked at a doctors, but when I changed jobs my new employers had to reapply for me.

I have just run one for one of my employees and it took 3 weeks to come back! Never known it to take so long but definitely don’t bank on it always being this timeframe

Misthios · 21/08/2024 07:43

You cannot apply for an enhanced DBS check on yourself. It has to be done through your employer or another body (like the Scouts, Sport England). If you are successful at the interview they will then ask you to do a DBS check.

StormingNorman · 21/08/2024 07:46

Last time I did one it was all sorted by HR. I just needed to turn up with some ID, I think my passport and something with my address like a bill or bank statement.
