To think this just rules me out completely?

Job interview for a start date in just under 3 weeks time. I should apparently hear back this week but I reckon I’m going to be automatically ruled out as I don’t have a DBS check and this position needs an enhanced one and I think it will take longer than that to receive the copy? Feel deflated now.

In my experience the employer has always applied for these not a potential candidate

Apply now. If they want to see it, say you have applied and will give it to them when you get it.

you can’t apply for a dbs on yourself.

KenAdams · 21/08/2024 08:17

Start dates aren't that strict. If checks haven't happened and references aren't back, they just delay the start date. You won't be the only candidate with no DBS, just apply.

LittleLittleRex · 21/08/2024 08:24

It will only rule you out if you aren't going to meet the requirements for it, have a criminal record etc.

It's paperwork they'll do for you, but it's in person specifications to put you off applying if you won't get it.

They're coming back very quickly at the moment.

I’m finding they’re taking longer! Waited almost a month for some.

ilovemyskunks · 22/08/2024 19:43

OP there are companies online that will sort your enhanced dbs check for you. Just have a search on the net. My husband used one.

In my experience an enhanced DBS has to be requested by the employer but they have never taken more than 5/6 days.

This. A school for instance can get one done v quickly.

governor we were told that wasn't possible

My job required an enhanced DBS (NHS); I got the job at the start of January, and my DBS didn't come through until April 6th, they still honoured the job. I wouldn't worry, they will go through it with everyone!

Employer has to do them and everyone needs one - even if you have one if you move to a new job you have to have a new one.

No you don't.you sign up for auto renewal

2Old2BABPpresenter · 22/08/2024 21:43

I run DBS checks at work, for an enhanced an employer has to apply and there has to be reasonable need for there to be an enhanced check run.
You Can only apply to the update service within 14 days of a check being completed in you, you then pay an annual fee to stay on the update service.
How quick the check completes really depends on several factors… time at current address/last 5 years of address history, how pressed your police force is as DBS checks are low on their list and enhanced checks run through a police check also, any time served in the military (this can either speed up or hinder the process), all in all there’s lots of factors and it can only be chased up after 60 days in the process. Trust me I’ve been there chasing for employees.

Yes you can sign up for the update service and then if requested a new employer will ask for your DBS certificate number and run a check via the update service which comes back instantly.

SpringboksSocks · 22/08/2024 21:48

Unless they’ve changed the rules recently you can’t just transfer DBS from one setting to another anyway. The new employer applies for it.

LIZS · 22/08/2024 21:50

Many organisations like councils and schools have access to a quick DBS system which takes days rather than weeks, They are not transferrable unless you have one and signed up to the Update system so even those with an existing one may need another,

Only if they accept the auto renewal, not everywhere does and some will still insist on doing there own new check anyway.

Don't ask why I have no idea, I've just come across this before.

DisabledDemon · 22/08/2024 22:23

I'm self-employed and get my work through a franchise so I had to sort my own DBS out. That said, it only took a couple of weeks.

SEAHORSESROCK2 · 23/08/2024 07:52

StonwEd · 21/08/2024 06:19

I verify these as part of my job. Contacted casual or volunteer - doesn’t matter if you had one yesterday, we’ll be doing a new one before you start with us 👍🏼

I thought the whole idea of DBS replacing CRB was that once registered with the update service they were portable and new employers only have to do an online check. Otherwise you have some people who end up having to cart about multiple certificates?

Sunflowerfield9 · 23/08/2024 12:12

Thank you everyone. I read all your replies and was very helpful.

found out this morning that I got the job!
