How much have you spent on holidays this year?

I am looking to book a holiday for 2 adults and 2 children for next year. It's costing at least £2k for Europe all inclusive ones. I wonder if everyone is spending that sort of money. I am pregnant currently so haven't been on any holiday this year. My children are young so we can go on holiday in off peak season. Just looking to understand how much people spend on an average on holiday each year and has it gone up massively.

£2k for 4 people sounds really cheap. Are you going when the pools will be warm enough to use if that is important to you?

Meadowwild · 20/08/2024 14:20

About 2k each. Weekend Citybreak in Europe, week-long activity holiday in UK, along weekend visiting friends and a week staying with friends in their UK holiday home.

Next year will be bigger budget as we plan a couple of long haul holidays.

Colinswheels · 20/08/2024 14:34

This year we have spent around 10k for a family of 4 which is a relatively high spend year for us. This is for:

2 nights at a 5* hotel near where we live (without the kids)
3 nights at Center Parcs in February half term
5 nights on Jersey in the summer holidays
One week AI in Greece in October half term

We would probably have spent a bit less next year to make up for it but DH's tax bill was significantly lower than expected so have booked a week in Tenerife next summer which is 5k for B&B.

LadyDanburysHat · 20/08/2024 14:35

£2k all inc in peak holiday times is really cheap. We have spent £3.5-4k and that is for October, not even the summer.

Tisfortired · 20/08/2024 14:36

We spent £2200 in June this year for two adults two kids to Majorca - though the kids were free as eldest had free child place and youngest under 2. That was for 10 days half board.

We then spent £260 for a 4 day break in Northumberland earlier this month.

Flibflobflibflob · 20/08/2024 14:37

3.5k for AI 2 weeks for 3, probably another 3k for 3 for ten days (but that won’t be AI so will add up to probably another 1k minimum).

So about 7.5k for 2 holidays for 3 this year. Can afford it fine but it starts making feel a bit queasy looking at the cost. Costs going forward will go up as DC is a much better traveler than before so we can start doing longer flights.

KentishMama · 20/08/2024 14:39

That is an extremely good price for a week AI for 4 people.

I think we just spent that much for a 4-day break for 3 people (self catering, included a lot of cafe and restaurant visits ).

Chocolateorange22 · 20/08/2024 14:42

Errr about £200 in February half term in Devon and about £30 for camping a weekend before the kids broke up.

We struggle covering school holidays between the two of us so can't take leave at the same time. Sooo February half term I take the kids away and house share with family and split the costs. Then camping was our household and one day A/L for my DH.

A family holiday is a massive luxury that doesn't work for us at the moment until DS3 is old enough for holiday clubs.

Mainoo72 · 20/08/2024 14:46

About 9k for 3 holidays & a short break. All in Europe.

Mmmm19 · 20/08/2024 14:48

I am for around for 4 of us, overlapping with a school holiday so only 1-3 days school missed but getting harder to find. Tend to go better quality half board than cheap AI

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 20/08/2024 14:57

My total this year will be around £10,000. That’s just for me.

Panicmode1 · 20/08/2024 15:04

Significantly into 5 figures, but that's a MAJOR aberration! We went skiing in Canada in Feb (DH and I), 2 teens went on school ski trips, and we are going to Thailand for Christmas (2 adults, 4 teens/young adults). Usually we rent a gite in South West France with a pool and drive down for two weeks - costs c 8k for 2 weeks of wine, cheese, sun and perfection.

Thailand was planned to be our last big holiday as a family as the older two will be graduating/taking finals and the younger 2 don't have any public exams next year. DH has just been made redundant though so we are now struggling with whether we go ahead with Thailand or cancel - either way we lose £3.5k - so we think we will go ahead. It may be the last bit of light in a dark tunnel for a while 😞

CaputDraconis · 20/08/2024 15:21

Just me and my husband.

Week in Egypt £2.5k
Week in Cape Verde £2.5k
2 weeks in Dominican Republic £7k

More than we usually spend but it's a big anniversary this year and still less than my friends are spending annually on nursery fees 🤣

Greigeisthelatestbeige · 20/08/2024 15:26

2K is very good depending on long are you going for OP?

The destination eg Turkey, Bulgaria, Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco, various countries in Africa, Eastern Europe incl Poland will be considerably cheaper.

ThatsCute · 20/08/2024 15:29

Probably just under £30,000 for the whole year—February, Summer, October.

Grute · 20/08/2024 15:32

About £1500 for 3 holidays in the UK.

1 week in N. Wales in spring
1 week in Cornwall early July
1 week booked in UK Oct half term

We have a toddler & a 4 year old pre schooler. We’ve holidayed in the UK since our oldest was born, it works out much cheaper then going abroad since we’ve taken advantage of going in term time. It means we get to go a few times a year too, which is lovely.

Our oldest starts school in Sept though, I think that could be the end of our cheap holidays 3 times a year!😵‍💫

I was looking for May and July time ….WOW.

We’re looking at going abroad the year after. We’ll need that long to save up for it!

penguinbiscuits · 20/08/2024 15:33

I don't actually have no idea.

But thinking about it - £4.5k skiing in Jan
Bali x 3 trips a year - to have a rough guess... £3k per trip?

penguinbiscuits · 20/08/2024 15:33

*actually have no idea

coaltitsrock · 20/08/2024 15:36

£500 for a 3 day UK holiday incl food and days out. It's the absolute max we could afford.

mitogoshi · 20/08/2024 15:39

Don't know, more than my financial advisor would like for sure. 2 city breaks by plane, a long haul holiday, a holiday in Scotland including ferries.

Saltedbutter · 20/08/2024 15:47

Around £15k. Probably closer to £20k once the year is up.
Your AI holiday sounds really competitive for four people. Once you’ve broken down the cost and what you’re getting in return, I’m struggling to imagine a world in which that could be done cheaper.

Heatherbell1978 · 20/08/2024 15:54

That seems cheap for AI for 4. I thought I was doing well with £2.6k for an AI in Turkey in October for 4 of us for a week. I budget £8-10k a year for holidays which includes spending money.

Lemonyyy · 20/08/2024 15:55

About £600 for a week camping in Dorset in May (this is including food, days out etc.)
About £2000 for a week in France in August, AirBnB, ferries, food, diesel, day trips.
All self catering, never done AI.

Several hundred on weekends camping with friends etc.

And teen dd did the school ski trip which was £1200 but had that set aside for her for a while.

Can't fathom spending £10ks on holidays every year, wish we were that rich!!

ViscountDreams · 20/08/2024 15:57

Total about 10k including spending money and pre-holiday spending (clothes, lotion etc).

  • 10 nights AI in Greece for 2 adults, 3 kids.
  • 3 nights AI in Spain for 2 adults.
  • 5 nights in Scotland for 5, self catering cottage on the coast.
Peakpeakpeak · 20/08/2024 15:58

2k all inclusive for 4 is a pretty good price at the start and end of the season. Prices have gone up, but you can usually get something 3 or 4 star for around that budget in the first half of May or Sept and Oct outside of half terms.
