Our home was flooded in October 2023, again in January 2024 and April 2024, we lost everything from the ground floor and damp got upstairs and ruined things up there to. The material things are an inconvenience and expensive to replace but nowhere nearly as bad as the loss of the sentimental things. I have never felt stress and hopelessness like it, I would wish this on my worst enemy,

We have insurance they’ve been ok, traced and tracked the issue, made us water tight and dried us out (12 weeks of hell with dehumidifiers, fans, heat pads, suction tunnels etc). Thete are lots of things I stupidly didn’t claim for as it just didn’t register at the time that I needed to, the insurance company sent an adjuster but they only add what you request, this was an expensive mistake and my stupidity is adding up fast. Furniture replacement was through insurance mandates, they never seem to fully cover the cost of replacement. We currently have zero furniture because of this as we just don’t have the money to add. Carpet/vinyl/wood was a mandate for CarpetRight had to pay £350 extra on top for that as well, ordered it all in June paid with the mandate and then topped up in cash as requested, 8 week wait was due to be fitted this week. Had three letters in the post start of the week from the administrations they’ve gone bust!! I rang my insurance company how won’t help as they’ve paid CarpetRight, not sure how much more I can take.

Sorry about typos, I’m tired and stressed out!

There's no voting option @RainbowSlidders.
Honest answer here - I have no issue with you setting up a GoFundMe, folk do it for all sorts, however it's probably not the sort of thing I'd donate to.
Hope things improve.

StopInhalingRevels · 18/08/2024 20:03

Contact your local council asking for the household support fund.

Making errors on your insurance claim is going to get you zero donations on a gofundme. That's really not what they're for, and will be viewed as such.

RainbowSlidders · 18/08/2024 20:07

@StopInhalingRevels Thank you for your honesty, I wouldn’t say it was errors though. It things I didn’t add like shoes, coats, saucepans etc the small things that add up!

Kimmeridge · 18/08/2024 20:07

To be honest there's no way I'd donate to that. Not having the right insurance cover (sounds like you didn't have new for old in relation to your furniture) & not claiming properly isn't a cause people are likely to contribute to.

Juliet194 · 18/08/2024 20:09

Sounds like a stressful situation.

Look on Facebook marketplace for cheap/free furniture.

Contact citizens advice re carpetright. Did you pay the £350 to your insurance company or carpetright? If you paid carpetright with a credit or debit card then you should be able to get the money back via your bank.

Truetoself · 18/08/2024 20:19

@RainbowSlidders i am not understanding what you mean. With insurance, you normally have a blanket cover then any items above a certain value is listed individually. I have never said a sofa costs x amount .....

What is it for though? I thought it was used to help people with financial hardship through no fault of their own?

Being affected by flood more than once sounds horrendous, with or without insurance

Lmnop22 · 18/08/2024 20:33

Not sure if it helps but I went into Tapi carpets this week to order carpets and the manager told me they’d bought CarpetRight and were keeping approximately 50 stores open. So, if that’s the case, they should honour existing orders. Worth speaking to them perhaps?

Look it up. You'll get the gist.

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/08/2024 20:35

I understand your frustration- we lost a lot of stuff in a fire and hadn’t put good enough insurance in place in the first place (our stuff burnt down in storage). Again, an error on our part and it turned out to be a very expensive one.

it was all devastating but it wouldn’t have occured to me to ask others to contribute, nor would I contribute in similar circumstances. I’d try and help in other ways though.

I do feel for you though it sounds devastating

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/08/2024 20:36

Oh and re carpetright going under the insurers absolutely should be able to sort something out here. You’re covered whether or not who they use going under

xyz111 · 18/08/2024 20:51

You can certainly set up a go fund me. I doubt you'll get strangers donating but friends maybe will if you share on Facebook.

Insurance is so important. I work in the emergency services, and we have dealt with people who have lost their whole homes in fires, and no insurance at all.

Starlightstarbright3 · 18/08/2024 20:53

I would also go back to insurance if there voucher was for carpet right

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 18/08/2024 20:54

OP, sorry to read your post. I would really recommend that you get in touch with your council to find out what facilities they have. Many of them (most, I would say) have partnership arrangements with social enterprises who operate re-use of pretty much anything - electricals, furniture, bedding, soft furnishings. These are cleaned/test and sold to the public for pennies really. It's a great shame that so much is thrown away so this could be a good option for you?

I really hope that things pick up for you soon and that you get your house into comfortable order again soon.

purpleme12 · 18/08/2024 21:01

I'm not sure what you mean by three furniture?
It's like you're saying they're not paying for the furniture or something cos you've got none?
I don't know if you can explain what you mean?

The carpet/flooring I'm not sure either why you're saying you have to pay extra for that?

However I do imagine it would be easy to make mistakes actually like you mentioned in your post. I can see me doing it. And I don't think it's a bad thing to do a Go Fund Me for. No idea how successful it would be

shelosthertoenailatthebeach · 18/08/2024 21:08

Saucepans? Were they washed away? Surely you can wash them.

notanotheronenow · 18/08/2024 21:55

How are you going to cope in another few months when your home floods again? Surely the real question is where else can you move to?

Its amazing how many people don't bother. I've seen it said so often on here
'I've got nothing worth stealing' or 'I could afford just to buy s new telly' That'll be no consolation If your house buns down

Fiddlerdragon · 18/08/2024 22:34

The go fund mes I donate to include money for life saving cancer treatment for a young mum. Prosthetic limbs for a child with no arms. A funeral of a local child who was burned to death. I’m sorry for your circumstances, but no one’s donating for your ruined carpet and saucepans

CornishTiger · 18/08/2024 22:38

As a friend I might donate to a go fund me like that.

The carpet right thing is seriously shit. Have they cashed the mandate? Can it be cancelled?

The smaller items you didn’t originally claim for- can you add to your claim now?

RainbowSlidders · 18/08/2024 22:39

@purpleme12 I’m not sure what you mean by three furniture I have read my post again and can’t see that, if it is there it is a typo.

Insurance send out an adjuster (human) to take photos, measurements etc, you then receive an offer. For example my insurance company only use DFS the adjuster values the sofa at £1879.43 that’s what you get in an insurance mandate for DFS, it’s just an A4 print out you exchange for furniture. Same for dinning table, carpet etc etc they give you an amount at the supplier they use.

A main sewer pipe burst under our house, which shouldn’t have been there, we are a new build. We were flooded with sewage and fool waste/water so absolutely could no rinse anything out. The kitchen was totally destroyed, that has been stripped back to brick and fully renovated including electrics and appliances. We have insurance and good level of coverage including matching sets etc, in the moment I stupidly didn’t claim for small things like everyone’s shoes as in my mind who claims on their home insurance for school shoes, let me tell you that mistake has been costly.

Relaxd · 18/08/2024 22:41

When we had a flood there were a few things that we realised later were ruined and we spoke to the insurance manager for our case and she arranged for the items to be replaced, I had to send some photos. You could try that if not already maybe. One was carpet with mould and one was a door that only became clear was warped a few weeks later. For clothing and bedding which turned out to be very smelly and damp and beyond recovery due to sewage in the flood, we were asked to provide a rough cost and got a percentage of that.

Overthebow · 18/08/2024 22:43

Can't you just get furniture from Facebook marketplace or a free site until you can afford more? And shoes from Tesco or similar?

YOYOK · 18/08/2024 22:44

I can’t say it’s something I would donate to. You have a right to start a GoFundMe but I think a lot of people will think it’s a tad cheeky. Have you looked on any free Facebook groups? You find some good household bits and pieces on there.
