To start a Go Fund Me

Our home was flooded in October 2023, again in January 2024 and April 2024, we lost everything from the ground floor and damp got upstairs and ruined things up there to. The material things are an inconvenience and expensive to replace but nowhere nearly as bad as the loss of the sentimental things. I have never felt stress and hopelessness like it, I would wish this on my worst enemy,

We have insurance they’ve been ok, traced and tracked the issue, made us water tight and dried us out (12 weeks of hell with dehumidifiers, fans, heat pads, suction tunnels etc). Thete are lots of things I stupidly didn’t claim for as it just didn’t register at the time that I needed to, the insurance company sent an adjuster but they only add what you request, this was an expensive mistake and my stupidity is adding up fast. Furniture replacement was through insurance mandates, they never seem to fully cover the cost of replacement. We currently have zero furniture because of this as we just don’t have the money to add. Carpet/vinyl/wood was a mandate for CarpetRight had to pay £350 extra on top for that as well, ordered it all in June paid with the mandate and then topped up in cash as requested, 8 week wait was due to be fitted this week. Had three letters in the post start of the week from the administrations they’ve gone bust!! I rang my insurance company how won’t help as they’ve paid CarpetRight, not sure how much more I can take.

@Relaxd I will give them a call thank you for the helpful suggestion, didn’t think that would be an option. All of our walls, door frames and doors have been replaced, downstairs toilet completely replaced as well. I don’t think people fully understand how devastating flooding is unless they’ve experienced it first hand.

It’s unfortunate, but why are staying in a flood area.?

Floralnomad · 18/08/2024 22:47

This is not something that I would donate to but people set up go fund me for all sorts of things that I wouldn’t give to , I saw one the other day on our local FB for money to pay for the cremation of their horse - unbelievable.

RainbowSlidders · 18/08/2024 22:48

@Nsky62 I am not in a flood zone, developer ran the main sewage line under our house instead of under the road like in the plans. Nobody could workout why we were flooding at all let alone with sewage. Our concrete base has had to be dug up for the developer to deal with their mistake.

RainbowSlidders · 18/08/2024 22:50

Hence why we flooded three times in 6 months.

purpleme12 · 18/08/2024 22:50

I meant THE furniture not three

Bemusedandconfusedagain · 18/08/2024 22:51

If the insurance company won't sort the Carpetrite issue out I'd raise a formal complaint and take it to the Ombudsman if needed.

purpleme12 · 18/08/2024 22:52

I think perhaps what OP meant is that the insurance company decided she'd under insured herself. When you're under insured they won't pay out the whole of the claim amount.

OneFrenchEgg · 18/08/2024 22:53

I'd donate if you were local and it was a kind of thank god it wasn't me situation. I can imagine a few people on our local Facebook page would tbh.

EmeraldRoses · 18/08/2024 22:53

I saw a go fund me the other day and it was for someone who needed the money to get her car repaired, I'm not kidding! Some people have no shame!

StopInhalingRevels · 18/08/2024 20:03

Contact your local council asking for the household support fund.

Making errors on your insurance claim is going to get you zero donations on a gofundme. That's really not what they're for, and will be viewed as such.

There are no rules like that about Go Fund Me. Some women make them because they want a boob job!

opinions about and facts are not the same thing. Just because you wouldn’t donate to something, doesn’t mean someone else wouldn’t.

HaveYouSeenRain · 18/08/2024 22:53

Please no that’s just embarrassing. Have a look at some gofundmes for real hardship. I wouldn’t donate to your new carpets.

RainbowSlidders · 18/08/2024 22:57

i’m not going to start a go fund me I will contact my insurance company as advised. We have insurance mandates to spend it just seems that they are never quiet enough, the dfs one is £253 short of the cost of a like for like replacement, I would be stupid not to use the £££ of mandate and spend £200 on Facebook marketplace instead.

Same for extendable dinning table and 6 chairs furniture village mandate for £1087 not enough to fully cover the cost my a few hundred pounds, it’s just annoying.

Someone on my FB made a Go Fund Me to pay for her daughter’s summer trip to America. Now that is cheeky imo. But a lot of people donated to it. This is a woman who had 6 kids in private school!

My point is that you may not want to donate to something but you can’t dictate to others about what they do. People can donate or scroll by.

Have you read the thread?

Emmanuelll · 18/08/2024 23:01

Yes, you said 'that's not what they are for'.

Who decides what they are for?

Bogginsthe3rd · 18/08/2024 23:02

You can obviously set one up but I don't think you would be flooded with donations. Horrible situation but it's not a typical gonfund me one. One "Hail Mary" approach would be to approach your local newspaper to offer them a story of your multiple floodings. This is much more likely to work if you can draft a story yourself to send eg title like "we were flooded with sewage twice but I didn't cause a stink with the insurance company". Local newspaper journalists are lazy and will print anything. You can then link to your go fund me in article.

tinklingchimes · 18/08/2024 23:02

Anyone can start a go fund me. I know you've said you aren't going to but I think it's quite harmless to do so. People have the right to donate or not, so it's entirely up to individuals. I have to be honest though, it's not one I would give to. I think the best thing is to go back and fix the insurance claim, if you can.

HorseSnorts · 18/08/2024 23:04

I personally don't understand how anyone could start a Go Fund Me. To me, its begging...I have too much pride. But if you feel you need to do this then that's your choice.

RainbowSlidders · 18/08/2024 23:06

@purpleme12 no we aren’t under insured thank goodness because that would be even more stressful, it’s just the adjuster seems to have under valued everything by at least £250 it adds up! We have like for like, matching sets, new for old and all the extra cover options. The missing items was my own stupidity I said that in my op.

in my defence I never in my wildest dreams thought I would come home from the school run to find my house was like a sewage plant ever let alone three times in 6 months. The clean up and drying out by a restoration company was over 100K so it’s definitely not being under insured.

StillSeekingResponsibleAdult · 18/08/2024 23:08

Can you claim anything off the developers? If they put the pipe where it wasn't supposed to be, surely they have some responsibility to pay for the consequences of that?

purpleme12 · 18/08/2024 23:10

If you're not under insured why have they not given you the right amount needed to get new furniture?

I'm just wondering what the reason is for that?

Do you have any charity furniture shops in your area? Could you replace some furniture with second hand items in the meantime?

RainbowSlidders · 18/08/2024 23:13

The insurance covered the restoration cost and electricity that was used to run the machinery, which was £400+ a week.

I think I have hit my limit and feeling sorry for myself, it’s nearing a year, we don’t have a proper home anymore and the garden is still a building site with massive trenches dug all over the place, I’ve had enough! The new kitchen is lovely, we were allowed to pick what unit style, appliances, tiles etc we wanted so not all bad.

Have you tried tried challenging the amounts paid out?
