To be creeped out by this?

Today, two “Jesus lovers” / have you heard the good news people from my home country rang at my door. They started talking to me in my native language right away and didn’t knock on any other doors, simply got into the car and left. They obviously knew where I’m from and that I live where I live. This is what I fond creepy.

I was sadly too flustered to ask them on the spot, and I was kicking myself after.

AIBU to be creeped out? Any ideas how they could’ve figured it out to do a “targeted” knock?

That is creepy. How would they have found that information out about you and why?

The why was to bring me the good news about our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.Grin

I actually don't necessarily doubt their intentions, it's the how that bugs me.

Maybe someone who knows you / is a neighbour goes to their church and they mentioned they knew you because you were from the same country?

Either that or God passed on the info.

HighlandCow78 · 17/08/2024 21:31

Is it possible that somebody is trying to play a prank on you OP? I am told by DD that it’s a well known joke nowadays to request Jehovah’s Witnesses to come to someone that you dislike’s home..

bows101 · 17/08/2024 21:33

Probably from electoral information.

Probably from electoral information.

How would that work? Just put half a postcode in and you can see all the people that live in that area with name and address? That would make sense as my name would automatically give away where I'm from.

I doubt it. I'm quite private and the people that know where I'm from AND where I live are very few and far between.

They weren't JW going by clothing and mannerisms , but definitely some kind of Christian sect.

Can't think of any other type of Christians other than jw who knock on doors to discuss their religion.

Possibly 7th day adventists(tbf we have several various Christian sects back home, no idea if they took hold here too or how they operate). I googled and there's a church 2.5 miles away from me.

britneyisfree · 17/08/2024 22:13

If you're a Latter Day Saint you're on their list forever and they're trying to bring you back into the fold.

NowImNotDoingIt · 17/08/2024 22:15

Tbf, it doesn't really matter what they "are", just how they got to my door so specifically.

A PP mentioned electoral , but I don't know how that works.

Is that plausible?

OP posts:
Doggymummar · 17/08/2024 22:16

We had this once. We spoke to them in English and they said, oh do you not speak Portuguese? We said no. They said do your neighbours speak Portuguese? We said they are Japanese, maybe and they left with their clipboard and drive off. Most weird

In my mind, no.

cariadlet · 17/08/2024 22:19

Is your surname a typical surname from your country? They could have gone through the electoral roll, looking for people with particular surnames to target.

stainnotagain · 17/08/2024 22:19

OP, I assume you don’t have a company registered to your home address that would show up on Companies House? Have you tried googling yourself (possibly + your area) to see if anything else comes up?

BettyBardMacDonald · 17/08/2024 22:19

That would creep me out, too. And I don't appreciate my days being interrupted with that claptrap.

stainnotagain · 17/08/2024 22:23

Or are you part of any groups/societies/clubs related to your home country? I’m a member of a “[home country] in UK” club who have all my details including address - I know they’re not the most up to date with data protection, being run by volunteers etc. Someone could’ve gotten hold of this list and passed it on to your visitors?

stainnotagain · 17/08/2024 22:28

Even if you signed up for a Tombola, volunteering, newsletter or one time event 10 years ago, they might still have all those addresses somewhere… I don’t think of door knockers as the techy types who scrape data from the electoral roll, but maybe I’m being prejudiced now!

LimesOfBronze · 17/08/2024 22:34

That kind of knowledge is quite likely to be LDS/Mormons. They are rabid data collectors.

No. Only thing I could think of is Amazon(some drivers are from my home country and when they see the name on the parcel they say hello in that language) or a restaurant that I order from on Just eat. I suppose it would be possible.

I also found a (paid for website) where it gives a list of people living in a certain area. So with like half a postcode or town. I do show up on that but ofc, they'd have to pay for a full address, or if they have a name and area there are other websites like 192 or electoral roll to get more for free.

Thanks for asking that and making me think, as the more options , the less creepy it becomes if that makes sense. I'm definitely calming down about it.

Seems like a lot of time and money(at least petrol) to waste just to have the door shut in your face, but who knows? I'm not in the business of saving souls. Grin

If they were LDS they would be wearing name tags that say "Elder Name" and dressed in black trousers and white shirts. Were they dressed like that OP?
Could it maybe be the delivery driver mentioned you to his church knowing you are from the same country?

Beautiful3 · 17/08/2024 23:02

It's jehovahs witnesses. I had the same. They thought I was Polish and sent a Polish j.w to my house. After 5 minutes I said I'm English?! He apologised and left. My husband said it was really bizarre. My mother who's a j.w said they notice different language speakers, and share the address with those who speak the language. They usually hold magazines/leaflets/small computer called Aŵake and the Watch Tower.

Edited

The lady wore trousers, had a silky top with v neck(not too deep but still), dyed hair and very nice (subtle , but noticeable) makeup. Now , my knowledge on JW might be a bit outdated and based on stereotypes, but I'm 100% sure they weren't JW , unless they had a complete revamp and I've been living under a rock.

OP posts:
MyDogsPaws · 17/08/2024 23:10

I think JW must keep some kind of record of people, I used get a lot of them at my door as I always used to speak for a minute just to be polite but it started to get a bit much when dc2 was born so I asked my usual door knockers to please not come back as I’d had too many JW at my door and it was disturbing my time with DC and I’ve rarely ever had any at my door since then.

My theory is that the local JW hall keeps a record of everyone they’ve spoken to so if they had previously been aware that you were a certain nationality they could have sent out members from that nationality as a ‘targeted approach’. Creepy really!

True they might not be j.w. My mother was a j.w and she wore make up and had lip filler! It's not against their religion to wear make up. Women can wear trousers too.
